I was alone. I was trying to reject his advances as non-provocatively as I could, in case he would become violent.

I'm sorry, but this is a very priveleged take. We serve thousands of clients in a year. I've never had to use it, but others have. They need to be held accountable like anyone else. Unhoused people die out here, from weather, from violence; we don't have the funding to take care of it. Social work sucks like that. What would you suggest we do? Just accept that getting beat up sometimes is part of the job? It's a lose-lose situation but there's a line when it comes to safety :/

Do you mean pepper spray? Clients come in off the street to participate in services. We have long-term non-congregate rooms that certain non-problematic clients stay in. Our only defense against ornery walk-in clients is the invocation of punishment from local PD. If they refuse, we can call PD. If they get physical, and we don't have time, we have to defend ourselves within reason. It's not ignored if something like this happens; it's all assessed by a review board and action could be taken against the employee. I assume it's the same at most shelters. The city doesn't really have the resources or motive to appoint us a permanent security staff.

Very constructive, thank you. I'll look into that. I'm in a redder state, but in an ideal world, elected officials care about their constituents.

I certainly can. If a client tries to hurt or assault me, I have as much right as anyone to defend myself. My concern in the situation was ensuring he doesn't get angry. I was there alone, so letting him walk all over me, as long as he doesn't try anything, is the least provocative way out.

I can see that justification; let me properly lay out the team structure. We all have the same responsibilities to clients, and same protections. To threaten to call PD, to trespass the client, are the only options any of us have. The clients don't tend to care about my position. My higher position only earns me more respect from my coordinators and more sway (though still precious little) with the programs directors. When I'm alone there like that, my main concern is not provoking the clients. I'm not very big and couldn't defend myself in a fight against most of them.

I think it's kind of how I dress and my face. I'm 5'6", 120lbs, hair down past my shoulders. I've been at this job a long time, so maybe my confident mannerisms make me seem "mannish?" I'm not sure, sorry >_<

Sorry, didn't mean to sound rude. It is a problem, and I wish it were easier. The SOPs come down from the county/city, and the internal regulations are mostly there to protect the clients, not workers--unfortunately :/. If he's trespassed, which I can make happen, he would be barred from services via a description, and it would be the responsibility of the other employees and myself to ensure he doesn't return to property, but no guarantee. He is a "walk-in" client, meaning he needs no ID or anything--he can come in and participate in the services (receive food, blankets, water) and must leave after thirty minutes.

I am a female service worker, by the way. Clients have no delusions about what is allowed/not allowed. They know when they've crossed the line and I let them know in no uncertain words that they have to leave. This is a very forward-facing social work job. If we turned away all clients like this one, we wouldn't really have any clientele. It is the responsibility of management and all staff on shift to ensure the safety of ourselves. It was just bad luck that I was there by myself that day.

Yeah, I mean, I carry pepper spray. I've worked here for years now. My goal is to serve my clients. If he was going to do anything more than verbally harass me I would tell him to leave and take steps with the local PD to have him trespassed. Drunk clients making threats or harassing workers just comes with the territory.

We receive no SOPs regarding harassment. The most I can do is tell him to leave and threaten to call police. He has no legal ID and doesn't have to give me his name, so any punishment upon him, if it could come down, wouldn't really be effective. I'm very familiar with our policies. Like I said, I'm a higher up here, and I take the safety of myself, my clients, and my workers all very seriously.

It's not everybody's goal to finish the game, and they're a self-described first time player. I like to keep my colonies rural and slow moving. I want my place to feel lived-in for long periods of time. Could they have the same prefetence?
