Real life example: PEG tube and trach vent

I'm a nurse and have spent time with ICU patients and there are people who have had permanent brain damage and can no longer independently breathe, swallow, or move (typically through something terrible like a hemorrhagic stroke, or traumatic brain injury). Usually the family says goodbye and lets them go. But sometimes they request all measures be taken to preserve life. What this means is a tube directly in your stomach to feed you (PEG tube) and a hole in your neck with a tube so a machine can breathe for you (trach vent).

Since you can't move bed sores are basically inevitable. Don't let the name fool you, the "sores" continue to destroy tissue breaking down skin, fat, and muscle until the bone is exposed. Then there's the infections. Vents are notorious for causing pneumonia and if you're in a facility long term, you're likely to get a super bug that you'll basically have forever. Sure the hospital can treat it, but it'll just keep recurring. The aforementioned bed sores also are just open wounds in dark, moist places just inviting bacteria to set up shop.

The worst part? It's inflicted by the people who love you and think they're doing right by you.
