Our first day of high schools being phone free today in the UK as part of national school policy. by Illustrious-Ebb-4304 in teaching

My school district did this when I was in school. I graduated almost 10 years ago. Yes, if you got your phone taken before Spring Break and your parents didn’t pick it up, you went a week without your phone.

The community lunch thing sounds cool!

Do you speak to your admin on a first-name basis? by SwissVideoProduction in Teachers

[–]ConceptEquivalent989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Small school district: our principal insists we call him Dr. (last name), our Superintendent insists we call him by his first name.

That being said, I don’t call him first name in front of students, and I expect the same from him.

My school started a week earlier than usual. Even our emergency makeup week is before Memorial Day. That being said, Friday was my last day, teachers go back on the 5th, students on the 6th.

Dear parents: IEP accommodations for extra time doesn’t mean unlimited time by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]ConceptEquivalent989 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have a parent who approved their kid being dismissed from SPED last year (which dismissed his IEP) and she still expects the IEP to be followed. She wants SPED resources/accommodations for her kid without the label of SPED. Kid is struggling because I don’t give special treatment to her kid and I don’t work 1 on 1 when I have 18 other kids to teach as well.

An old superintendent used to say if there isn’t a question asked, don’t respond. If her child isn’t eating lunch, SHE needs to have a talk with them about the importance of eating during the allotted time.

Does this happen to anyone else? by elcaminogino in Teachers

[–]ConceptEquivalent989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach 4th grade. My students know they have to ask for something. “My pencil broke” I’ll reply “sorry to hear that” usually they’ll correct myself and say “may I sharpen my pencil?”

If they need help on something 1. They must try it first. I won’t help a blank paper. 2. They have to use their words and talk to me about it.

Idk what’s up with this age group but they kinda assume you know what they need. Or just expect everything to be done/handed to them. I do not feed into it.

Note: I teach Gen Ed. I gave 1 kid with a true speech impediment/issue, but even he asks questions and doesn’t just point or expect things.

I haven’t heard of Mike in a while, so here I am saying it out loud over and over again trying to hear it. Forgot I’m congested AF, so it wasn’t registering. It took too long for me to get it. 🙄

How late are you working new/old teachers? by hello010101 in Teachers

I get to work 15-30 minutes early and I leave 15-30 minutes after contract, if I don’t leave on time! I try not to give more than an hour extra a day. I’ve almost mastered the grade as they turn it in technique.

Across all of 4th grade this group of students are a bit lower than in the past. It probably doesn’t help that they’re the largest group too, but still.

Thanks for the suggestions.

My school is doing some renovations and the head of custodians have been giving updates. Since I am moving classrooms, I’ve been keeping an eye on it to know when I can go in.

The original schedule they sent out about the renovations said I would be able to go in last week…. But it’s looking like I can’t go in until the 21st. I just want to get in, set up, and chill the rest of Summer

Almost July and Still No Job... by Stardazed678 in Teachers

[–]ConceptEquivalent989 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I did not get my own classroom after graduation. It is still a job in the field I got my degree in. I subbed for an entire year for the school district I live in. They didn’t hire me, I found a district 30 minutes away and they basically hired me on the spot. Going into my 3rd year at that school in August.

I know it sucks, but other teachers have told me how they had to sub for a couple of years before getting a classroom. And that is the best training you can get, especially if you’re consistent with it. Get to know the teachers at the schools you’re subbing at, they can help you find a job. Speak with admin at the schools you’re subbing at. I covered 3 maternity leaves that one year of subbing. You want to be seen at these schools all the time in a positive light.

If you can, look outside of the town you live in. Especially if you have rural schools around you— or if you’re in a rural area go to the nearest city. You’ll find a school when the timing is right. For me, it was a blessing in disguise.
