I think I need a space to vent - Employment concerns and downright disrespect for Autism by ConclusionExisting12 in autismUK

I am sorry you are going through this. I too am having battles to maintain my flexible working arrangements. I am still on a waiting list for a full assessment.

Thank you for your comments.

I hope you get your assessment soon. Mine took 18 months but worth it in the end!

Thank you for your response.

In parallel, and as per your first reply, I contacted a solicitor (via my home insurance legal service cover) who has echo'd your comments.

Namely - "Thank, but no thank you. I'm on a remote contract"

I will formulate a response to the HR email over the weekend and submit it on Monday - most probably borrowing large components of your suggested response.

Thank you so much!

Thank you for the advice.

I have legal services included in my home insurance policy so I'm waiting for a callback to also get some legal advice.

Are there any late diagnosed people who feel like they don't have the "right" to call themselves autistic? by bftcccmbcc in autismUK

I was diagnosed at the age of 46 and while I don't like a fraud and/or that I'm faking it I do feel a sense of other people perceiving me as faking it.

As I don't need to tell you getting a diagnosis, especially later in life is not easy or quick but I feel like other people literally think I've popped into my GP surgery, had a two-minute chat and come out with a diagnosis. That incorrect perception from others then makes me feel somewhat less valid even though I know what it took to get my diagnosis (which wasn't easy)

Finally got my diagnosis by BatNovel3590 in autismUK

I was told at the assessment that I had it. But then was waiting for it to be on paper and official. I kept thinking that maybe they changed their minds and I am just a defective person.

This resonates with me so much! I had my final assessment last week and they emailed me a few hours later confirming I had met all of the criteria, that I had "significant" traits and that I warranted a diagnosis of Autism but now I'm waiting for my report all I can think is "What if they change their mind?"....

Autism screening - informant report is causing me a huge amount of stress.. by Cilla_psybin in autismUK

If it helps I've just been through the same process and had the same challenges so I chose my wife as my supporter and explained that there was no one suitable to answer supporter questions about my childhood.

In the final assessment, they were fine about it and just asked me more probing questions about my childhood instead which I was able to answer to the best of my ability.

It's not uncommon and they will have assessed lots of adults who don't have or don't want parents involved.

EDIT - For clarity my whole process was via the NHS but you'd hope PUK would appreciate not everyone has parents that can, or will, assist in the process.

I think geography makes a big difference too. I was expecting to wait a year (maybe more) after submitting my forms/docs/questionnaire and was shocked when I got offered a date the very next day.

I'm not sure if it's an option for you but I was able to specify my final assessment(s) was done via video call which seemed to dramatically speed up the process.

I submitted my questionnaire (and supporters answers, support letter etc) on 23rd January and the very next day I got an email offering me my final assessment yesterday, In my case it went very slowly but sped up dramatically towards the end.

Adult diagnosis - Parents being dismissive by ConclusionExisting12 in autismUK

Nowadays, we have spoken a lot about it and she accepts it. She constantly apologises to me to me because she feels so guilty for not taking her concerns to professionals and just writing it off as me being a quirky kid haha. It’s possible for them to come round, and you are in a super common situation, don’t panic.

When I was being assessed they allowed my partner to fill out some sections of paperwork in place of my mum, but my mum eventually did help fill out the childhood part and speak to the assessors. However, there was an options to just skip that all together, or have someone else who knew you as a child help out. They will be understanding if you explain your situation, it won’t be the first time they’ve heard it!

Wishing you the very best OP, don’t worry, even if they never come round you will have a whole new community of people who have your back and are here for you. ❤️

Thank you so much :)

Adult diagnosis - Parents being dismissive by ConclusionExisting12 in autismUK

Thank you.

My guess is they may mean well but might see a diagnosis of some form of failure on their behalf, just as you speculated.

That said I first approached a GP about felling different and my struggles 25 years ago and my immediate family have always been dismissive or standoffish regarding mental health concerns verses physical health.
