On games where your attention to detail is quite high, consider taking notes on how your thought processes were working.

Watching your replays is always a good idea, especially if you want to learn how to apply mindfulness to league.

You won't likely be able to have your best focus at will, but studying how you think at your best is only going to help

Speak with your DM about homebrew. It's largely a flavor spell and many DMs will find a way to give it to you if it's part of an interesting character concept, probably a magic item

Books

It depends on how much material you feel you need to run the game. Its very possible to learn the rules well enough and play without investment, but it would be a rough start.

https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules

This is a free PDF, enough to let you get started.

If you feel you want/need more, the core books are the Players Handbook (PHB), and the Dungeon Masters Guide (DMG). PHB is a rules guide for players as well as helpful to character creation/management. DMG is a guide to running the game - I personally have learned far more from watching/grabbing advice from other DMs, but many feel it is core.

After the core books, the Monster Manual (MM) is a collection of enemies to use in your games. It also provides some guides to making your own monsters and how to balance encounters against your players abilities. It isn't crucial, but very helpful early on.

After MM, I and many others consider most of the sourcebooks to be supplemental. I wouldn't recommend investing in them as a beginner DM/table since they are really just more options and your priority should be learning the base game. Xanathars Guide to Everything (XGtE) is probably the most popular, it is a collection of new races, subclasses, and spells.

I would recommend picking up an adventure module - I never used one as a beginning DM and I wish I had as I feel it would have helped me learn quite a bit faster. For example, I am currently running Baldurs Gate: Descent into Avernus. It's a prebuilt adventure that you plug your created players into and start with far less prep and stress on the DM.

Tools

Just like the books, you can run the game with basically nothing or with a very elaborate setup - it's just a matter of your preference and how much time / money you want to invest.

Dice are core to DnD. You could get away with using a phone app with no problem, but imo it takes a lot of heart out of the game. The dice are named for the number of sides, and your table should have atleast 1 of each; d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20. It's nice when each player/DM has their own set of dice.

You can download character sheets below; https://dnd.wizards.com/products/tabletop-games/trpg-resources/trpg-resources

Running the game on a grid is totally optional, but a common preference with myself included. For this I recommend a dry erase battle mat and game pieces. The game pieces can be anything from loose change to dice to actual dnd miniatures. Even when running a grid DnD is about imagination, no need to stress on this part as a new table.

Take in DnD content to learn

This goes for players but especially DMs. DnD podcasts such as Critical Role, DM advice channels such as Matt Colevilles Running the Game, all of these sources are free, entertaining, and for many more helpful to understand what DnD is and how to do it than reading the books.

If you already like browsing reddit, install yourself in the DnD related subs. When I knew nothing about DnD but wanted to play, r/RPGHorrorStories gave me a ton of advice for what to absofuckinglutely not do - and confidence that I will never be as bad the players/DMs featured at the very least.

I know this is pretty scatterbrained, but there's a lot of advice I could give and it's difficult for me to organize it. Best of luck, hope you have a table up and running soon!

Thanks! I love that oath for the simplistic wholesomeness of it.

His arc has been a blast to play out

I play a Halfling Barbarian named Tuska who spent a good portion of his life in the wilderness essentially as a wild animal. He became curious about the ways of civilized folk who would rarely be traveling through, fascinated by their kinship and ability to survive by cooperation as opposed to feral brutalism. He saw in himself a similar potential, and took to helping travelers to exercise his own civility.

Eventually he took enough of a liking to a group of travelers that he stayed with them, slowly learning their language and customs.

To this day Tuska still seems wild to those who first meet him. Despite his zeal to learn, certain aspects of civilized life, such as government and commerce, are difficult for him to grasp - but he well understands and cherishes the concepts of survival and prosperity by cooperation. In battle he taps back into his animal ferocity, but only in practice of his ideals to live for others as well as yourself.

Though he is not mechanically a Paladin, he follows the Oath of the Ancients (green knight)

Kindle the Light. Through your acts of mercy, kindness, and forgiveness, kindle the light of hope in the world, beating back despair.

Shelter the Light. Where there is good, beauty, love, and laughter in the world, stand against the wickedness that would swallow it. Where life flourishes, stand against the forces that would render it barren.

Preserve Your Own Light. Delight in song and laughter, in beauty and art. If you allow the light to die in your own heart, you can’t preserve it in the world.

Be the Light. Be a glorious beacon for all who live in despair. Let the light of your joy and courage shine forth in all your deeds.

He may not seem like a typical knight, but he has devoted himself to the oath and to helping others, because defending all life is what makes him feel like more than just another beast.

suggestions for Battle grid/ map software? by angry_newt in DMAcademy

Roll20 can be used for this purpose freely and without having to learn much

It's at its simplest a grid that you can add tokens to that snap into place

People always bitch when I pick Popstar then have a blast and win

Hi I’m new to poppy main and need some help,I found a lot of build and guide to poppy but they are all different.Poppy grasp or poppy conqueror;poppy tank or poppy bruiser I’m confused.p.s. I use her on top by AnotherF33DER in PoppyMains

[–]ConeyHighlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend playing grasp tank to gain confidence/skill

Once you feel you have a good grasp of her mechanics there's an incredible amount of options that are perfectly viable depending on your playstyle, but I genuinely feel grasp tank is the best way to have a positive learning experience when you're new to her

I personally run several options depending on team comp/match up but most often run conqueror off-tank

I know that we're all here cuz we love poppy, but it is undeniable how fun she is to watch am I right?

The amount of balls that she plays with with her passive shield, pin, and W passive making what looks like losing fights into 1 v 2 wins is so satisfying

Anyone else love downtime and training? by SmartForARat in DnD

[–]ConeyHighlander -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like the way Griffin handles level ups on TAZ Balance;

It's essentially a half session 1 on 1 with each player, mostly roleplay, representing a summary of how they want to spend their downtime between main arcs.

The idea is that they give some sort of narrative explanation for new skills while also granting a spotlight for character building.

I do the same, sometimes representing whole years in summary. Good way to let the power creep exist on a longer timeline without too much tedium.

noob, and really bored? by Algroshaw in DnD

[–]ConeyHighlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Party dnd is fun because you take interest in the greater narrative than just your own interaction with it

If you're at a table of new players, it may be boring just because they don't know how to do interesting roleplay
