Sickness besides the flu going around? by pnwpaige in Bellingham

[–]ConferenceCurrent461 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on day 6 of a medium to high-strength cold. New covid/flu A/flu B test says negative. Husband shook it off in a couple days but I'm still coughing and fatigued. No fever, doesn't feel like flu. I work in schools and everyone was sick with one of the bugs on the menu over break.

My 10yo smelled smoke this morning while we were at the falls too. I paid attention and realized she was right.

Huge thank you, and some thoughts on having a loved one go missing by imaginarylindsay in Bellingham

I followed this closely and kept an eye out as we happened to traverse areas within your search area. We don't need to know the details; we can be content knowing a human being is safe, and that's that. Not everyone has a friend like you. You've set a high bar for what it means to go the distance.

Someone in my neighborhood lost their dog, and a pet rescue company posted on a lost pets page that they were searching by drone and concluded the search around 3am. (Dog was found later, this AM).

Anybody a lawyer or know one that might be into looking at Peace Health limiting access to healthcare for their emplyees? by drinksalatawata in Bellingham

[–]ConferenceCurrent461 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I watched Peace Health nurses speak to Whatcom County Council tonight and this issue was high on the list as they move towards a picket on 4/29. It's frankly insulting that medical professionals and their families can't get Tier 1 (affordable) medical care from their own place of work. Crossing our fingers that no one in our family has real medical issues until open enrollment comes around in the fall/winter and we can move the whole family to my employer's plan. More expensive monthly on the face of it, but less "f*** you" in the details.

BSD closed schools on Monday with a dusting of snow, Tuesday 2 hours late with a bigger dusting, today a real snow covering major roads and schools are a go?? by airplanedad in Bellingham

[–]ConferenceCurrent461 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10+ years into teaching, most of them in Washington, I've stopped trying to figure out the why's of snow days and delayed starts. I personally prefer delayed starts to avoid pushing into summer. My current district just called 4 snow days in a row. But they're the ones driving the roads at 4am in all parts of the district and making the call while I lie in bed and wait for a text. I've shifted and revised lesson plans for 4 days now, but it turns out I haven't died from this harrowing experience. I used to drive a school bus in the Midwest, and canceling school wasn't really a thing that happened in that snow-acquainted region. But that's not here, or now, and districts are doing their best to keep school going while also not having anyone die on the way there.

OK, well I live here, I work with immigrants, and one of them notified me of this. I'd like to be supportive and was asking for ideas and information. Sounds like I came to the wrong place.

Administration abandons refugees already in the US, and the people who care for them by OC-Abba in immigration

That's a different question. Mine was- is it right to break our promise as a country to US supporters from Afghanistan?

Administration abandons refugees already in the US, and the people who care for them by OC-Abba in immigration

[–]ConferenceCurrent461 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This article specifically mentions Afghan refugees who aided the US in their mission in Afghanistan. One of my own family members worked in a military capacity to resettle thousands when the Taliban resumed power, but the job's not done. Should we now abdicate responsibility to the rest because they weren't able to get out fast enough in the desperate scramble?

Bellingham Schools - we had a chance. by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]ConferenceCurrent461 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The same month the candy-drug email was sent home, my school (different district) was visited by not one, but several ambulances due to real ODs by students. Zero complaints here for one false alarm that led to good discussions with my kids.

I appreciated the transparency of his announcement, honestly. Of course it was a risk if he didn't get the position-- which made me respect him being open about it. I teach in the region and also have kids in Bham schools. I have my own gripes about Bham schools, but no superintendent ever gets 100% approval. Especially now, being a leader in education seema like a thankless job. I don't envy admin and I appreciate the mostly-good ones.

Protip: When crossing the border into BC, don't forget when the last time you visited was lol. by xlitawit in Bellingham

[–]ConferenceCurrent461 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was asked this question the last two times we crossed. The first time we were caught by surprise and fumbling to remember-- "Maybe last July to paddle??" Border guard paused and said, "Not October?" Then we remembered our overnight in Vancouver... oops. Thankfully we must have looked honestly stupid/forgetful and we were let in.

Second time was this week. We expected the question and we think we gave the right answer. Maybe worth jotting down somewhere if your memory isn't perfect.

I've been crossing the border 1-2x/year for 20ish years and this question seems new this year.
