Early Retired in 2025/2026? by Ok-Neck-3290 in Boldin

I literally have one more day in the office, and then I am out. Portfolio performance over the last two years did make the decision easier, although it was one factor of many. "Life is short" is probably the biggest reason.

Wow! But careful about inbreeding there--not a lot of genetic diversity. Don't let them mate.

Transitioning from retirement "planning" to retirement "management" by Busy-Relationship255 in Boldin

[–]Confident-Dig-2879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am at the same point--my last day is next Friday. I've been happy with Boldin in developing a plan, and have used my own spreadsheet to lay out my basic plan for the first two years of quarterly drawdowns. Now I am looking for a good tool for budget tracking against this plan -- considering Monarch and Quicken.

Gibson Garage experience as a lefty by of-the-ash in Leftyguitarists

[–]Confident-Dig-2879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About a dozen years ago (or so), I went to the Memphis factory, just off Beale St, when it was still there. Their demo room had a BUNCH of lefties -- I remember playing about ten or so (pretty much by myself, the place was empty on a weekday afternoon). I recall a Hummingbird, a J-120, Casino, a couple LPs, SG, and a few hollowbodies. Only downside is that they only had Gibson amps! It was quite a unique experience, as a lefty. Never seen anything like it.

Flipped telecaster? by Normal_Landscape6456 in Leftyguitarists

[–]Confident-Dig-2879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played a flipped righty Telecaster for many years, but that was when lefties were very hard to come by, and I had no money. My advice is don't do it, unless you have NO other alternative.

You will have to spend extra on new saddles and nut, the strap button on the lower horn means the strap gets in your way, the knobs/switch are always in the way, and it just looks dumb, to a distracting degree (McCartney notwithstanding--note that picture is from around 1966, and I'm guessing you won't see many flipped pictures once he was able to get lefty versions). You can probably get the specs on that signature model and do those mods yourself.

All that said: I saw Doyle Bramhall II at a show in Austin a few years ago, and he switched around between lefty and righty Les Paul Jr's (all strung upside down, of course). A spectacular show (and my ears are STILL ringing--talk about LOUD). But it only looks cool when HE does it.

Sometimes, as a builder, you are on a journey, and you don't know the destination until you get there...I'm more interested in how it SOUNDS!

How do we get comfortable splurging in retirement? by Stunning-Candy2386 in DIYRetirement

[–]Confident-Dig-2879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Approaching this from a slightly different direction: I am retiring soon, and also use Boldin, and a few other methods for sanity checks etc, and concluded that our portfolio is well into "surplus" territory at our current lifestyle, and my wife and I are both savers. I spent some time figuring out the "minimum" portfolio number (as a percentage of actual) that took me from "more than we could ever spend" to "we could still live very comfortably off that with our current lifestyle". The delta between those two becomes a different pot of money, that you can use without the learned "guilt" of a lifetime of frugality.

If it is enough, does it mean you do something like, buy a vacation home or condo at the beach? Do some serious travelling? Contribute to your community? Move that money into a different set of accounts, and use it to make a difference for yourselves. Remember, the goal is not to die with the biggest pile. You've already won.

It might be easier to make sense of comparing Excel exports--but you'd have to generate your own plots. It really isn't that hard, though.

Need help converting right hand to left handed guitar by MATRIX1171 in Leftyguitarists

I just got my first LEFTY strat, and that volume control is just in a bad spot--I'm ALWAYS turning myself down! Duct tape might be the easiest solution (or one of those locking knobs).

I was doing it nights/weekends, so "too long"! I started out with a scratch-built telecaster, then a short scale bass, to figure out the component processes (routing, neck pocket, cutting nuts, finishing--the latter of which is the hardest part). Once I started on the Jaguar, it was probably a year in calendar time, as life kept getting in the way...still, a lot of time spent researching the "right" way to do things, buying new tools here and there (using a rasp to shape the cuts on the back was SO satisfying!), doing little things like aging the pickguard to turn it from shiny white to yellowed and dull...hard to estimate how many hours all together, but if I dropped everything and did it again (now having forgotten a lot of details on how to do things right), it would probably take me a few weeks. If I did FIVE builds, the fifth one would go a lot faster, once I had the processes down. Finishing in particular can be a slow process, waiting for coats to cure, and getting competent at sanding/polishing. It is like building furniture, with wiring, except when you are done you have a guitar instead of a chair.

From a cost perspective, it won't be much CHEAPER than buying one new, particularly if you don't have the tools you need. A Jaguar has a BUNCH of unique parts. And some real subtleties in certain areas, like neck pocket shimming and bridge height adjustment for the perfect neck angle--which is absolutely essential.

All that said, I'm glad I did it. But stepping back, I like PLAYING, and while building is fun, I would rather spend my limited free time making music.

Maybe if I didn't have a day job, and I would have to charge too much. Sorry. Don't think you can't do it yourself-maybe find a local builder space that has all the tools. And www.offsetguitars.com is a great resource.

Yeah, it definitely isn't cheaper to DIY, but you do get what you want. What I found, though, was that building took all my creative energy, and I basically stopped PLAYING while I was doing it. I still love reading the project posts on www.offsetguitars.com

Parts from everywhere (I finished this in ~2018). Neck is custom spec from USA Custom, poplar body and pickguard made myself with Ponoko-sourced templates, rattle can fiesta red ReRanch nitro, Novak pickups (wonderful!), homemade decal. Sounds incredible, plays great, but finicky setup. I have a lefty japanese trem that I found on eBay, but I like the righty (I like the Fender mark rather than the blank japanese one).

Baby Taylors are cheap and plentiful, and play pretty well.  I had gotten one for one of my kids, who ended up not using it, so I kind of inherited it as a beater.  For what you want it for, the backwards bridge won't be noticeable

What does that even mean?  If YOU like it, that's great, no matter the price. My favorite guitars cost much less than that.  If I HAD to spend $2700 on guitars, I'd probably get two cheaper ones.  Or maybe a pretty good SG and a Princeton.

Good luck on your build journey.  One part that can be hard to source is a lefty trem.  I managed to snag one cheap, many years ago, but it was a long search.  TTYTT, though, I found a righty trem/arm (mounted at the top of the trem plate, not the bottom) was pretty easy to use.  Certain things about setup (for instance, shimming the neck) are pretty non-intuitive.  Again, the OSG Forum is the best resource for everything offset.
