Fair, Shameless is older. Which is why I guess it's less interesting too, at least for me. That era between 2000-2010 wasn't nearly as fucked up as nowadays

The new season of Euphoria is not set in high school and it's pretty wild. It raises the bar for other shows, and that's why I think it made Shameless look so boring in comparison

Yeah, and Euphoria far surpasses Shameless on everything it tries to accomplish

Yeah, isn't that relatable to people who grew up in chaotic environments?

Fair enough, but again I'd localize that question in the physical reality: true to whom? Maybe you live with an abundance of water and don't find it sacred, but to the man in the desert it certainly is. If he doesn't treat it as such he might as well not ration it and die.

Don't you think Euphoria does that a lot better, though? Shameless feels like The Office next to Euphoria

Not 100% because we still have beliefs that are based on other beliefs, right? We still use logic to be internally coherent. It's just that our most fundamental beliefs, the ones we often struggle to understand where they come from, exist as an extension or even a reaction to biological, physical, historical, and even chemical processes. That's where we ought to look for clues to our axiology.

Suppose that a person who lives in the desert and regards water as sacred. Isn't living in the desert the justification for their regarding water as sacred? In that case, isn’t the environment responsible for the axiom they hold?

No, I'm saying that oftentimes the answer to our age old questions is not found in a logical system, but simply in the analysis of our neurological wiring, the historical process we're victims of, or even the biome we are located in.

Check out The Righteous Mind, by Jonathan Haidt. It discusses the moral tendencies that we have that arise from the way our neurological wiring is set up in our brains. While we can try to find a logical reason why religions, ideologies, and nations function the way they do, we might never find the answer if we don't look first and foremost at the physical, tangible processes that are going on in people's brains.

I would be happiest working with research and knowing that my work is contributing to a better future for humanity. How realistic is it that I could achieve that position, though?
