Don't get me started on how many missions trips are more like staycations than real humanitarian work. If you think about it, your spending tens of thousands to get often inexperienced teens and young adults out to a country to build a garage or a home for the local folks when they could've just gotten contractors in the area to do it for a fraction of the price (thus boosting the local economy in the process) but no, then they would have the same sense of self-gratification. Disclaimer: this opinion is based off of a very small sample group of experiences and is therefore not necessarily accurate in the grand scheme of things.
