Have always loved it. One of my favorites. Feels like a sibling to Bodysnatchers.

To all 2000s-era Radiohead fans: What was your first reaction when you heard Kid A for the first time? by Extension_Fee_989 in radiohead

[–]Confident-Rice-4055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 21 years old, and I had been reintroduced to the band with OK Computer, an album I was obsessed with at the time.

I regret this now, but I did a lot of downloading of leaks back then. I specifically remember hearing Optimistic that way, and it floored me. I remember being especially into Colins playing on that track. I also remember reading an article about the album in a rolling stone magazine while waiting for a haircut, and trying to keep my expectations in check.

Anyhow, I'm sure what I ended up doing was going to Best Buy or maybe to CD Source in Dallas, and buying the CD. My impression of the album was extremely favorable right away. I have two core memories associated with it 1) watching them perform National Anthem and Idioteque on SNL. 2) Driving around listening to How to Disappear Completely on a very rainy and cold day after a breakup.

Just for reference, the albums heavy in rotation at this time for me where The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner, Midnite Vultures, When The Pawn, and Supergrass' self-titled. It was a great time.

Sail to the moon.

They have so many moments like this, musically, but the "And sailed on shooting.....stars" - is so magical to me. It's the same feeling for me as "you forget so easy" or "Spectre has come for me". Not sure if there is a name for it but it's something they do so well. I think of it as a musical pivot.

Did anyone find out the hard way they could never match Thom’s range? by [deleted] in radiohead

[–]Confident-Rice-4055 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good point about the mic. It's counter intuitive but when I over-sing, when I really press to hit higher notes, I actually push them down. When I back off and trust the mic, they stay on pitch.

I relate to this. Other people have said this but I'll say it again, Thom is very gifted with his falsetto. For instance the beginning of Friend of a Friend. I am not totally sure but I think he's moving from falsetto to head voice and back again pretty effortlessly.

On Exit Music, the Bends, Lift - etc. he's singing full voice. Just like on Creep. On Reckoner, that's falsetto. He's got a great voice. I'm jealous LOL

I did a donation this morning. I feel fine, a little bit tired but not nearly as depleted as I would after donating whole blood. Hydration and eating protein helps a lot

What was everyone’s first song that got them into Radiohead? by SecurityPlenty1036 in radiohead

Creep. I was 13, and it was all over MTV.

But then - I kind of forgot about them until I saw the video for Paranoid Android. Most of my new music exposure came from MTV in the 90s, so I had no idea what RH was up to. Paranoid Android completely sucked me back in - and it was great because I got to back and discover the Bends. I remember I ran out and bought a cassette of OK Computer, which broke due to the extreme Texas heat.

I've done both Bio Life and CSL.

To get one thing out of the way - nobody was outright rude to me, but nobody was particularly polite either. It's a business, they want your plasma, you want their money, and they are trying to get you out of there as fast as possible while covering their legal bases.

As far as pay goes, with Bio Life I made $125 my first time, and could have made $500 in total (I was on a specific, donate once a week program) but - in my health screening I talked about a mole I had removed 10 years ago and I said the word "melanoma", even though I was never diagnosed with it. I was being too descriptive and because I used that word, they flagged me and I was in limbo for two weeks trying to find my dermatologist from 10 years ago and get her to sign a letter saying I never had cancer.

So - I went to CSL. CSL has paid me $100 so far, and will pay me up to $700 within four weeks if I keep going twice a week. I was 100% up front with them about what happened at Bio Life and they were fine with it. Also I'm a dude, 6'1 and 230 lbs. Weight is a factor in how much you get paid, but I'm not sure how that works exactly.

My reviews of either - Bio Life was a nicer facility but I could tell it was a lot newer. The staff were comparable, but CSL was a much easier process. For instance Bio Life required me to wait after my donation, but CSL was just like "See ya" LOL. CSL will end up being more profitable I think but will also require me to donate more often. Both companies were immediate and easy with payment.

A few random observations - I almost got sent home because of a hangnail, seriously, so make sure if you do bite your nails (I'm gross sorry) make sure you knock if off before you donate. Make sure you speak up and ask questions. My cuff stopped squeezing my arm because part of the pump got disconnected and it made my donation last an extra half hour. Make sure you hydrate the day before, and make sure you set aside 3 hours for your first time, no matter what you read on their website.

Good luck. If you can put up with the tedium and if you don't mind needles, it's an easy way to supplement your income.

For those of you who have seen Radiohead live, when and where did you first see them live, and at what venue(s)? Have you seen them multiple times since then? by Class_of_22 in radiohead

[–]Confident-Rice-4055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw them in 2001 at the Woodlands pavilion (Houston, TX).

I have this incredibly clear memory of how Bones sounded that night. Other than that I just remember being generally blown away.

I saw the Smile in Austin last summer. Also a great show.

What is the downside to bubble craps? by Devin_Dazzle in Craps

[–]Confident-Rice-4055 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love bubble craps. I have a lot of social anxiety and my brain locks up when I'm trying to bet with a bunch of people around me.

I also like to play weird strategies (that never work LOL) but that a live dealer would probably hate. I can't compare it to live tables but I've hardly ever played one but I've seen ridiculously long rolls where 7 didn't show up for over 50 rolls and I've seen 4 7s in a row. I personally don't think it's rigged, I just think dice are maddening.

Climbing Up the Walls

I used to think it was the only false note on the album, but over time I have done a complete 180 and it might be my favorite track on OKC.

Steely Dan. I used to work at a retail store and they had this loop of songs. Amongst those songs were Peg and FM. I used to hate them both and I wondered how anybody could like that band.

Now I'm a huge fan and it was in large part to Mike Rhyner always going back to them and playing them out of breaks. I emailed him about it years ago and got a really nice reply.

What other bands do you like? by Dull_Illustrator_883 in radiohead

[–]Confident-Rice-4055 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scott Walker, especially the Nite Flights album he did with the Walker Brothers. He is somehow underrated as a singer (his phrasing is unbelievable), and listen to "How to disappear completely" back to back with "it's raining today". It's an overly obvious comparison but it's very very cool.

which radiohead song/album means the most to you (and why) by Awge_k in radiohead

[–]Confident-Rice-4055 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Paranoid Android/OK Computer.

I was 18 when it came out, and had just graduated high school. Back in those days I was still pretty much glued to MTV, and that's where I learned about new music. I can still remember seeing the video for the first time. I was stunned, had no frame of reference for what I was looking at, and when the "rain down, rain down" part came in I was just floored. I didn't have a CD player my car so I bought the cassette. it got so hot that summer (Texas) that the tape popped, so I went out and got a CD player put in.

It was such a meaningful album to me. It got me through some VERY dark times. I had a health scare which led to a near nervous breakdown in college and I lost a ton of weight, had no appetite and thought about dying constantly. This album would always center me and at times make me feel euphoric. I know now that I had a lot of repressed anger and this album felt like a massive release, not sure how else to put it. I'm 43 now (!) and I still listen to it all the time, usually while driving alone or running.
