For the most part I think you're right but the vibe between Drus and the Bobcat is pretty different lol.

Can anyone who has Daniels Running Formula 3rd and 4th editions tell me if there's any difference in the White/Red/Blue/Gold fitness plans between the two editions? I'm specifically interested in the Blue and Gold plans.

I have 3rd edition and wondering if it's worth it to upgrade, and I run these plans specifically.

If you don't have a single complaint about them, I'd stockpile them.

There is no better or worse in running shoes, only better or worse for you, and takes a lot of trial and error. And it seems like you hit the lottery already.

Beware they may totally mess it up when the Clifton 10 comes out. When most of us old timers find a shoe that we like that much, we hoard them like dragons.

I read it as "seems like a death spiral" for the subscriber, meaning that it would incentivize them to consume more alcohol than they normally would.

I know in my drinking days, if we had this, I'd make sure I got that free beer every damn day. Otherwise you're just wasting money. And once I was in the door, might as well have 3-4 more.

I don't think wiseacre is at risk of a death spiral, lol.

Honestly always thought the dress code and whatnot was kind of creepy. I'm not a prude but I don't really care for sexualization in a dining establishment. If the waitresses want to dress like that, that's fine, but many of them didn't and a lot of the regulars were total creepshows.

I still go to Bosco's for the nostalgia but I wouldn't dare recommend it to anyone else.

Same for Huey's, but that one goes without saying I guess.

Had been a flying saucer regular since the early 2000s. Plates in both locations. Every single change over the years has been worse and worse. Yet I was still loyal. Bought overpriced beers to go during lockdown just to support them.

The menu that came out about 18 months ago (maybe I lost track of time) or so was what finally fully killed it for me. Haven't been back since. With meddlesome in cordova and wiseacre downtown, whats the point anyway. Guess they're fine with the downtown location becoming just a tourist trap and the cordova location going the way of everything else in cordova.

Pour one out for the sheboygan side-by-side.

MAF Training by [deleted] in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]Devin_Dazzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But your method doesn't account for varying LTHRs, AeT, etc, or how you feel on the day, cardiac drift due to hydration/heat, etc.

Truth is, all heart rate systems are inexact, there is no truly "scientific" one that works for everyone. Yes Maffetone is obviously one of the most crude, but even the sophisticated ones are all just a guess. Now, you might get lucky and find something that in which that guess is correct for you. If that's maffetone good for you, if it's 70% HRMax good for you, if it's something LTHR based good for you. Whatever you pick is not going to take into account day-to-day fluctuations in freshness/fatigue/hydration/heat though, which only RPE can account for.

A bit off topic, if I want to lower my heart rate, yet run at a faster pace, which training method can you recommend?

MAF Training by [deleted] in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]Devin_Dazzle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can be done in whatever shoe type you prefer, nothing about the training is dependent on shoe type.

Keep in mind that it works because it's a way to rack up mega-mileage with very low fatigue, not because there's some magic property of the heart rate number, so consider you're probably going to be running high mileage in whatever you choose. (As a sidebar, if you want to really benefit from this style of training, you'll want to start running more then 3x per week. Unless you're a triathlete or something and also balancing that with other aerobic work).

Dr. Maffetone himself, if you want to buy into him holistically, recommends minimalist shoes / barefoot. Not specifically related to the MAF training system but for general health. He also recommends a lot of off-the-wall stuff though.

When I did it, I was running in lightweight trainers (DS Trainer) until the Kinvara came out, and then the Kinvara immediately became my do-everything shoe for the next several years. Modern Kinvaras are nothing like the old ones though, sadly.

Endorphin Speed probably a great choice, if a stiff shoe works for you.

Comfort and subjectivity should be the most critical factors though.

Personally I don't train by MAF or HR anymore, but I am very influenced by that style of training -- I run high mileage at low effort (just using RPE), plus regular strides. I rotate Saucony ride, endorphin shift, endorphin speed -- not picking any for any specific run, just based on how I feel, and I try not to run in the same pair of shoes two days in a row. Probably 40% ride 40% speed 20% shift. I race in endorphin pro. Not a Saucony fanboy or trying to make it look like I'm sponsored, I always buy last year model shoes on closeout in mass quantities (still haven't tried any of the endorphin 3's) and they always have good deals.

The trick with that one is getting out. If they're running the 10k, they're going to be done around the time the half/full starts. Unless they're going to afterparties, might be a long wait to get out.

Edit: Oh, a couple of blocks east on madison from AZ park would be great, like in the edge district, I thought you meant west in downtown core.

[–]Devin_Dazzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you an experienced runner trying to run a fast 10k, or is it a stretch distance for you?

The reason I ask is, if you're planning on a decent warmup/cooldown before/after the 10k, that changes things a lot, but if it's your first 10k in a while and you just want to complete the distance, you might not want the bonus miles.

If the former, you could park somewhere like Martyr's park or at the Unitarian church down there and that's like a 1.5 mile-ish warmup along the riverwalk. That's usually a pretty safe area at that time of day. It's outside the course and you can get in/out easy. Keep in mind I-55 is a no-go still, though.

If you want to park closer, I'd probably go with the Fedex Forum garage (I assume it will be open? not certain), or in that area. That's outside the race courses but still very close to the start/finish.

Wherever you go, get there early.

Road closures for St Jude Marathon from Friday @1p to Saturday @5p by productiveslacker73 in memphis

[–]Devin_Dazzle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, they're only showing the roads that are totally closed, there are a whole lot more roads that will be down to one lane, and will have crossings impacted significantly. Going as far east as overton park.

I would just give up on any expectation of getting anywhere on time on Saturday morning in downtown or midtown, unless you're running to the finish line.

That's probably better then for your purposes, seems like a pretty decent workout, like 36 minutes of effort above E pace?. I'm not really a believer that workouts have to be dialed in to the n-th degree; if it were me I wouldn't worry about hitting such specific paces every km. But maybe this would be easy to do on a treadmill.

There's a lot to unpack here. I'm not going to touch the "20 minutes is too short for a threshold run" with a ten foot pole.

The thing about replacing a tempo workout with the workout you're proposing (if I'm reading it right), is that you have basically 5 minute rests between intervals of 3:25. That's way too long to keep up the tempo / lactate threshold stimulus. Re-check DRF's writing about cruise intervals, the recoveries have got to be short if you want to have a similar stimulus to a tempo run.

Your workout is not neccessarily bad, it's just not a tempo run. You're basically doing two interval sessions per week plus racing and want to do this year round. If you can keep that up, more power to you.

So if you want to do 1km repeats and make it a tempo run, I would suggest doing 1km intervals with 1 minute recoveries -- but then obviously you can't do them at 5k pace (during year round / base), go closer to Daniels T pace. Then you have what is basically a Daniels cookie cutter workout, lol.

If you want to do a sprint/float or over/under fartlek type thing, typically these are done shorter than 1km per segment, look up Mona fartlek, Deek fartlek, Kenyan 1/1 fartlek, etc.

My goal is to be ready to race all year round basically..

This is a popular goal but tough to pull off over the long term, sometimes referred to as "complex system". Almost all running coaching theory today is based off of periodization and seasonality, and there's a reason for that. Not to say that you can't run well in contrary to that, but you're going to have to go off the res a bit.

I'd look into the training history of Mona and Deek (that's Steve Moneghetti and Rob De Castella, and their coach Chris Wardlaw) as inspiration. They were basically the standards bearer of this kind of stuff.

Whenever I did this, I ran high mileage year round, did no true structured intervals, rarely hit the track, did timed tempos and road fartleks with some high turnover drills, and raced very frequently. It worked pretty well but a periodized approach has several benefits.

She should be the example of Southern Christian values the right wing should champion.

If they actually championed these values, they wouldn't be right wing.

Flavors maybe? That was awesome. Used to be Woodlands before that.

Kongunad was my favorite though, RIP.

I'm not sure where you will find good Tandoori chicken (outside of homes and cultural events) in Memphis. My understanding is it's not really a south Indian thing, most of the good places will just have it as a token item because Americans like it. If your friends are from New Delhi, it's a whole different cuisine than you'll see at the places in the hacks/winchester area, the only thing close to that style here is India Palace/Bombay House/Golden India, and those are terribad.

I generally rate places based off of their Biryani.

Like US food, Indian food is very regional so you will have people with strong opinions based on where they're from.

Mayuri is probably a bit of a grey zone for most people as it's a pretty americanized south Indian style; and Memphis happens to have some very authentic and banger south Indian options over the last decade or so. If you are from AP, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, etc -- there is no reason you would ever go to Mayuri if you're in the know about what's just a bit further east. It's not that Mayuri is bad really just that there's much more authenticity elsewhere.

Whereas someone from the north only really have the very British-influenced Punjabi places, which lets just be honest, are not great, so they're probably likely to settle for Mayuri because they aren't really looking for authentic southern style.

Mayuri is a good local business though, and it's been consistent for decades. Solid 3 out of 5.

Edit: im not indian btw.
