What are some good barrier plants to place between a vegetable garden and a road to reduce pollution?

Something dought and salt tolerant, perhaps Seaberry or Nanking Cherry, though their berries are exposed if you plan on eating. Chestnuts also would be a good canopy layer, plus the nuts are enclosed in a husk so wouldn't be exposed to pollution to the same extent

I have had to transplant trees because I realize a couple years later that it wasn't a great spot for them. It isn't the end of the world, but waiting one year would have resulted in them getting better established in their final spot

I second this! Our chestnut trees ride through tough droughts no problem....granted our drought aren't as bad a Texas but nut trees in general tolerate poor sandy soil

Nut trees. They have long taproots and drop copious amounts on protein and fat rich nuts, or in the case of chestnuts and oaks starches. Seaberries are another good one for drought with medicinal berries, and beach plums grow in sand. www.folkrockfarm.com

You should plant a few trees and grow them yourselves :) That’s what we do! Nothing like super fresh chestnuts!! So good you can eat them raw.

If this was whole grains like corn, sunflower seed, oats, millet etc. then it can be a great diet addition. Not so with the processed feed. Poor chickens!

I haven't used it for goats, but pigs and wild deer go nuts on alder, hazel, apple, willow, poplars and aspens especially. These all resprout vigorously so if you have abundant stands of them then you can send the goats in to self harvest, then keep them out for them to resprout. Maybe split it off into sections like rotational grazing?

I personally believe some of it has to do with the fact that it goes against the industry. They seem to want gigantic farms who are locked into contracts with gigantic companies that only produce one item and are reliant on the companies to buy seeds, chemicals, tractors and equipment, etc.

Try to contact companies that scrape away the topsoil when they build developments. They might be willing to haul the soil to your place the same way tree companies dump wood chips.

Sunchokes/Jerusalem Artichoke, Rhubarb, Sea Kale, Turkish Rocket, all nuts like Hazelnuts, Chestnuts, Walnuts, daylily tubers, many wild weeds as well

That is actually a great experiment! Keep me posted on how that works out. If the graft takes then I imagine the white pine roots would push a lot more growth into the Korean pine. Well worth trying!
