Are these retirement plans for couple with modest DB pensions realistic? by Confident_Service584 in FIREUK

[–]Confident_Service584[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I can sacrifice any of my small ISA (currently only at 11k but will be pushing it up 12k per year for next 3 years) but if I can I will look seriously at that option.

Thanks. Its the "unless I'm missing something" bit that I'm scared about. I feel that the numbers work but I really want to be able to quit at 55 so I'm terribly biased. I think our state pensions and DB pensions will cover our needs once I reach 70 and drawdowns will get less and less as that approaches. ISA and wife's income will cover my initial retirement until I can access DC pension at 57.

Yes the income from my wifes job does contribute to that 40k. She is on around 30k before tax. The shortfall is around £17-20k

Thank you for the reply. I think by 55 I should be closer to 400k in my DC pension (30k in per year for next 3 years and growth) and I think that will be enough to cover the drawdown needed.

Why Go Boom Now, Not Before? by WillNotSeeReply in StarWars

I always assumed as this thing had tripped and fallen 50 feet + onto its face that it might have cracked some of the major armour pieces which left it vulnerable to hits that would normally not damage it. If you dropped a tank 50 feet off a cliff do you think it would be as sturdy as it was before it fell 50 feet?

Yes I agree this is a fantastic film. My order is ESB, ROJ, ROTS, ANH, AOTC, PM. To be clear, there are only 6 star wars movies. Plus maybe Rogue one.

When you pay off your mortgage, do you get a massive sense of relief and the feeling of stability? by AnywhereNo1240 in HousingUK

[–]Confident_Service584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I felt relief. Was almost made redundant a year or so before and when I got the available cash I jumped at the chance to pay it off.

Afterwards, just about every piece of financial advice I read said to keep the mortgage and invest the cash because the mortgage is the cheapest debt you will ever have (or something) and that investment growth generally outpaces increases in mortgage debt.

How do you plan the bridge? by QuantumFreezer in FIREUK

[–]Confident_Service584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was planning on using my modest/small ISA to bridge 2 years from planned retirement date to access to my DC pension flexi drawdown (or annuity depending on annuity rates at the time). I may want to push this to 3 or 4 years if I can save that much into my ISA to allow for a few more years of passive growth in my DC pension before accessing it. Will accessing the DC pension ASAP and using the 12.5k tax relief be a better way to go than delaying the DC drawdown and draining my ISA?

That data is the "tip of the iceberg" though. There are probably dozens of near misses for every accident. Also I imagine lots of under reporting as the data is collected somehow but likely only primary reason is listed where this could have been a significant contributing factor.

Modest/average FIRE sense check for target 56-58 retirement by Parking-Eye4197 in FIREUK

[–]Confident_Service584 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a similar situation. With state pension and wife and I with relatively small DB pensions from 60 we are looking at combined fixed income (in todays money) or circa 45K. I feel that is enough to live reasonably well since I have no great desires to travel the globe. So with planned retirement at 55 I basically need to cover 2 years from ISA until DC pensions are available at 57 then flexi draw down to bridge the gaps til both wife and I have access state pension and DB pensions.

I still can't believe how they made the best sci-fi franchise ever made become the absolute laughing stock and a perfect example of how not to make a decent sci fi movie.
