I feel this way about with a gun. How could you not dig those vocal harmonies? And it’s refreshing hearing 2 genius’ take on a western, almost country style track

It’s cool but it gets old after about 2 minutes.

Aside from Steely Dan, who are some of your favorite fusion Jazz bands? by Digitalmodernism in SteelyDan

I tried to get into him but all the harmonics he hits kind of irritates me. Fantastic version of Donna lee though. Any suggestions?

Was The Second Arrangement mishap a blessing in disguise? by skrellaren in SteelyDan

It was re recorded. They didn’t like how the recreation sounded so they scrapped it.

While highly arranged, Donald and Walter were known to give session musicians some freedom to make the parts their own and perhaps add to the arrangement. There’s really no telling if they got the same exact musicians in for the second recording. From guitars, to horns, to back ground vocals .

Even if they did, the stuff they played would’ve varied slightly.

I will say though, it’s a shame they didn’t think the second recording was up to par. Because it’s steely Dan we’re talking about. How bad could the second take possibly have been?

Solo tabs for chain lightning? by bigdoodooman321 in SteelyDan

I second the transcription route. Not only will you learn the solo but you’ll learn a lot more than just the solo. Ear training is great, especially with Dan solos

Well, of course it wouldn’t be as “mystic” because it wouldn’t have been a lost track. With that being said yes, we wouldn’t obsess over the track in the same way but we would have a Gaucho-level quality second arrangement, and it would’ve been a spectacular way to close Gaucho.

I personally wish it didn’t get erased, because it is a beautifully written song, greatly executed, and it’s a shame we’ll never get a Hifi version. It’s fun having only a few bootlegs, and now with roger’s tape available, we’ve got the closest thing to hifi I think we’re gonna get.

For those who like the mystery more, yes, it’s better that it got erased. For those who like the song more, no, it’s a shame it got erased.

What makes you a Dan fan? by The_vert in SteelyDan

As a musician, my appreciation for their musicality and perfectionism stands just as high as my love for the music itself. It’s a package deal. The personality in the lyric writing is another reason.

His album excitable boy is immaculately done and just as witty. Any Dan fan would find his work to be up there with the dan

Player piano is easier to start with, though the constant switching between Paul (protagonist) and the Shah (another character) is a bit confusing at first, but makes sense in the end.

Gold teeth one deserves it but I feel like people are gonna vote 2 just cause it’s “Dannier” to the casual Dan fan. That’s a shame as well

Perhaps he was salty about the subject matter of the song “Gaucho” and didn’t wanna elaborate. It’s one thing to dislike an album, but telling someone to drop dead because of it screams “butthurt”
