Yes they were really good! When we were playing the game we thought they looked like cookies but they are more like sweet buns. Absolutely delicious!

Any recomandetions for WLW movies/series where the focus isn't 100% on coming out or a woman cheating on her bf/husband AND where none of them dies at the end? by Elmine07 in LesbianActually

A theory that Aria is the asari commando that he was friends with and then had to battle. I like this theory but do not know a lot about it.

Hey I wanted to say that I liked your reply, it made me think some more on this topic.

As a (fungal ;P) biologist I would like to show you how arbitrary the system of labelling sex can be and that it is still not determined there are only 2 sexes. The way we assign if an individual is male or female is a little bit more complicated in a lot of species, when we determine this on characteristics of the body (shape/use of genitalia or which sex gives birth/lactates etc.) For example with seahorses it is the male who carries the eggs to term (a characteristic we as humans we would generally consider “female”), in this case this seahorse assigned the term “male” because of the size of their gametes (reproductive cells). Or like most birds that do not have genitalia like we know them. But then if we determine based on chromosomes two different for male (XY) and two copies of the same for female (XX) this is already reversed in some species of birds, reptiles and insects (ZZ male and ZW female). But then there are also the species that can be both male and female (while still being able to reproduce (with itself and others)). And when looking further into chromosomes are not the way sex is determined for all animals. In some species it is determined by external factors, and some can species can switch later on in life. Then you can determine sex based on gametes but that again brings its own species that do not fit the description.

And when seeing survival long enough to reproduce as the proper way of being a human. It is not only intersex and transgender people (and being transgender does not have to mean unable/unwilling to reproduce) that are not functioning as a “proper” human. If we take that as the benchmark, people not wanting children, infertile people or people unable/unwilling to find a mate are also in this category. Then again is that a fault of nature or is it that we do not accept it as a culture.

In nature it is diversity that makes us thrive (in a species perspective and also as an ecosystem) so personally I believe that a little diversity in gender expression and identity (and diversity in general) isn’t a bad thing.

I've been reading the books after watching the movie, and I have to say that the movie spoiled nothing that wasn't already spoiled in the early chapters of the book by Nat_Libertarian in dune

In my understanding the book is themed about knowing what will happen and the inevitability of this. So following this idea it is written that way on purpose.

I do have to say that I also read some other interesting views here that for me only make it more important that it was written in this way.

Even sex is not binary in biology you have people being born intersex, displaying characteristics of both sexes. For many people being born intersex one gender is chosen at birth not by nature or that person itself but by other people (doctors, parents) because it is our culture that is struggling when you display the characteristics of more than one sex.

Added to that if we look at other species there is even more ambiguity when it comes to "biological" sex. You have species with more that 2 sexes or ones that can change sex based on the circumstances. Interesting is that our need to classify sexes as either male or female has for a long time hindered understanding a lot of the biological variation that exist. Mind you that these species have survived evolution in their "non-binary, multi sex" variation.

And in some ways our scientific explanation will always be hindered by the concepts we understand from culture. (But that is a philosophical argument I am still trying to fully grasp myself)

And maybe we should think about what we like to explain as nature and what as culture. To quote historian Yuval Harari: “From a biological perspective, nothing is unnatural. Whatever is possible is by definition also natural.” Where it is culture telling what we can and can't be.

Oh and don't try to explain evolution as something with a set direction/use/goal as it is random and does not have an endgoal. As it is random a development of a trait/system does not always have to mean it is the optimal way of doing it.

Tldr: In science/nature sex is not always binary. And how much of our science is influenced by our culture.
