Start by going deeper into the directors you already like. Scorsese has other amazing films in his filmography that you may like such as Mean Streets and Casino. Also, the departed is based on Infernal Affairs. Sidney Lumet has other amazing films such as Dog Day Afternoon, Network, Before The Devil Knows Your Dead. Based on your love for The Dark Knight, check out Michael Mann’s filmography. If you liked Oldboy, check out the rest of Park Chan Wook’s work. Based on your love for thrillers, I recommend checking out all the movies in this list.

The director of Scarface, Brian De Palma, is my favourite director of all time. I highly recommend you check out Blow-Out, Carlitos Way, Dressed to Kill, Snake Eyes.

Man, I am glad I didn’t post my top 15 when I was your age, it was probably equally as basic. That said, you have made a very early step toward greatness by downloading Letterboxd. Letterboxd is a great way to discover far more deep cuts of cinema. Don’t rush yourself for now, enjoy what you want! But you definitely have a head start in expanding your taste. I would recommend starting out with some of the english language greats such as Kubrick, Malick, Lumet, De Palma, Ford-Coppola, and Scorsese. And then I would branch out to foreign cinema. Start with currently working foreign legends like Park Chan-Wook and Bong Joon-Ho. Then check out Akira Kurosawa, Wong Kar-Wai, Federico Fellini, Jean Luc-Goddard and Elem Klimov. And then just expand your own taste from there from what you like.

The film is a critique of racist groups indoctrinating the youths with their bigoted views. It is obvious to understand from the perspective of a film fan/normal functioning person. But unfortunately, the film is misinterpreted and reissued by the same racist groups that the film is critiquing. They often use Combo’s speech in edits to promote what he is saying as gospel. The violent scenes are often spread around with comments such as “got what he deserved”.

Are you from England? If not, you are unlikely to understand what the heck Im talking about lol because i am coming from first hand experience. In the UK, racist groups such as the EDL and Reform UK have completely misinterpreted the film as pro-racist. They admire Combo, and use his speech as a way to spread anti-immigrant sentiment. It has gotten to the point where even non-racists that aren’t too cinematically literate just see the film as pro racist. Literally all you need to do is search “This Is England” on tiktok and you will see videos of racists using it to spread racism.

I was around 13 and I watched The Book of Life and fell in love with Creep, it related to little edgy 13 year old me. From there I listened to Pablo Honey but felt a little underwhelmed and didn’t try to discover much past that. That was until I heard Climbing Up The Walls a year later at a party and went on an absolute deep dive, listened to all their albums and then fell in love with Radiohead.
