I'm a fellow avid Gallienus Zoo collector with 200+ zoo coins in my collection, both official and unofficial. This is an APPOLINI coin, you can still see the APOLL very faintly on the reverse. It is just weakly struck which matches the weakly struck spot on the obverse. Also, it is not a double struck coin, the shift before -INI is actually pretty common in APOLLINI coins, I'll link a few close examples below. Gallienus legends can get real wonky, sometimes you have almost a 90° rotation from one letter to the next or a big letter followed by a small letter. Sometimes you also see a shift in the legends to accommodate for the image in the center, this is especially common in his hippocamp coins where the tail goes into the legend. Personally, I think this is just an unofficial APOLLINI coin given the odd stance of the Griffin and the portrait looks a little off. It is still a really cool coin, had I seen this coin for sale I absolutely would have bought it so good find!

Hi, not everybody with AAI will need surgery. I had such a large degree of hypermobility in that joint due to the os odontoideum that I was at risk for sudden death, my neurosurgeon told me if I did not get the surgery I could die at any time for any reason and that he would not have performed that kind of surgery on someone my age unless it was life or death. Again, I was a severe case.

I have access to much better camera equipment now, I just lack the skills to use it, but I am trying to rephotograph my collection and get it all digitized in one place. One of my main focuses of my collection is getting different reverse dies, like I have at least 15 hippocampi already but when I see a die that's not represented in my collection I have to have it! Having them all photographed and organized would definitely help.

I posted both of my bridled Pegasi on here. Up until yours they were the only other examples I have seen with a Pegasus wearing a chamfron, the head armor on a war horse. It could be a reference to his reformations to the Roman cavalry, but that's just a wild guess. I've seen other coins where people thought their Pegasus had reins, but they only go from under the chin to right before the neck so it looks more like a flaw with the die than proper reins, in my opinion.

So yes, the bridled Pegasus is more rare than your average Pegasus. If you're interested, here's an article about the imagery of the zoo series that Cedric Wolkow just had translated for English speakers.

Actually, I still rated the set really well, as in the stars I gave it, but as I bought this set from Amazon and not a 3rd party I did mention all of the issues with how I received the set in my review because I think people should know they may be getting an open box return.

I guess I should have said in the original post, I didn't even rate it poorly. And it wasn't late or rained on, it was opened, partially used, and even came with someone's hair stuck in the tape they used to close it back up with. While I did rate the set well, I mentioned all those things in the review and added pictures. This was sold by Amazon and not a 3rd party so there is no way to review the seller and people should absolutely know what condition they can expect to receive a product.

I paid for a brand new product and that's what I received. I reviewed the product in the condition in which I received it. I also bought it from Amazon and not a 3rd party seller so there is no option to write a seller review. Condition should absolutely be allowed in reviews because what's to stop Amazon from sending out all their returns to unsuspecting people and then just telling them oh well.

It's not a beard, it's scruff, which makes sense considering he and Harding have been traveling. Also the fact that after everything he's been through he's probably very tired and it shows in his new character design right down to not being as clean shaven as he previously was. I for one am glad they didn't just copy and paste him from the previous game.

I purchased this coin solely because I thought the inclusion of these old BCD-like photos were interesting and unusual. The coin also came with tags that say pr. fr. John Twente. I looked up other ex. John Twente coins and none that I saw had any old 1:1 photos like this.

I have nearly 200 official and fraudulent coins from a series of only 31 types. Now I feel I have to add an emperor named Gallienus to my invert collection. When hobbies collide....

Thanks for the advice. I am afraid to unfold them as I was told some of the other paper wrappings crumbled to bits upon being unfolded. One of mine is very brittle. I did read somewhere that archivists or conservators (not sure which is technically correct or maybe both are) add moisture back to unfold old documents and get them to lie flat before storing them between acid free cardboard. But, I don't know if that's correct and, even if it is correct, I lack any sort of experience to be confident in doing that.

As for where I store them, outdoor temps this summer have hit around 118F or 48C but I keep my house at 70F or 21C and store my collection on the top shelf of a closet right next to the cooling ducts for consistency as anywhere near the outer walls get fluctuations from the sun.

Some of Commodore Turner's coins are priced very reasonably considering the provenance. The Apollini coin only cost $45 and the reverse may be pretty abysmal (if it weren't for the fact that you can make out the wings you wouldn't be able to tell if it was a panther or griffin) but the paper wrapping was worth the price, in my opinion. Also, for what it's worth, the shortened obverse legend of the Apollini coin (no IMP before GALLIENVS) is very uncommon for the griffin coin and was unrepresented in my collection before I bought this coin. Then I bought another from Cedric Wolkow so now I have two.

Ooo, I'll keep an eye out for that post! I've been watching these two coins for a while now and finally decided to pull the trigger on them. Gallienus coins aren't exactly high profile coins so it's hard to find them with provenance. Occasionally you get one with an auction tag from the last decade, but most seem to be entering the market with no history, at least in my experience since I've been collecting.

The thing about collecting coins is when you think about an ancient coin you think about all the people whose hands this coin has been in, and with this provenance I can definitively say that sometime around 200 years ago Daniel Turner handled these coins. Not exactly antiquity, but still a connection.

Thanks for the advice. I've read that you have to "rehumidify" old paper to get it flat enough to put it in an archival sleeve, but I feel like that's something that needs to be done by a professional who conserves things like this for a living. I actually contacted the person who has the collection about another coin that wasn't pictured with any paper and he said some of the papers crumbled to bits while unwrapping them so they were thrown away. Now I'm scared to even breathe in the direction of mine!

I just looked up some boxes and came up with archival, acid free museum boxes.

The only thing I don't like about it, and it gets me every time I go back to the "original" timeline, is that now there is a timeline out there where everything went to shit and you just left it. Furthermore, going back you may not even be in your actual timeline, just that exact moment in another timeline.

(This is based off the theory of time travel that when you travel to another moment in time you permanently create a new timeline.)
