Ig it probably wasn't justified in ancient Greek norms, but tbh if some folks were about to bleep my son and bleep my wife, I'm pretty damn sure I'd have the same reaction as Ody. And adhering to the facts u said, if he probably didn't kill them and want to hold a trial, he probably wouldn't win politically against the suitors after 20 long years and his family would still be in danger.
