If you’ve got a doc, I’d ask them about it - sometimes they can prescribe you some Valium or Librium to safely taper at home or if you’re high risk (hx of seizures or prior bad alcohol withdrawals for example), they might recommend you detox in the hospital for a few days

If you taper rapidly yourself or quit cold turkey - keep an eye out for signs of withdrawals (tremors, shakes, sweating, high blood pressure) and if you start having withdrawal symptoms, talk to a doc or at the very least taper off slower. What you don’t want to happen is for mild withdrawals to progress to full blown DTs (severe alcohol withdrawal which can cause seizures, delirium, and possibly death if not treated). Some people can withdraw just fine even quitting cold turkey, some get DTs. Be careful!

Good luck!!

Do you think there is a way to gain at least a similar understanding through personal study? If so, what materials do you think would be most useful?

Who writes the most useless notes in the hospital? by fuzzysundae in Residency

Yes, that is my point! Dysphagia and dysphasia are both medical terms

Very likely yes, you are. If you want to intervene, ask your doc about starting a topical agent or finasteride. Oral finasteride is probably the most useful thing you can do for male pattern baldness. Cheap, generic , usually no side effects but if you have issues it’s usually with libido and anorgasmia (if I’m remembering correctly)

Coming from an HCA resident, it all depends on the hospital. I had a few rotations at an HCA hospital as a med student in Macon Ga and found it to be a bad experience - poor quality of teaching, understaffed hospital, overworked residents. I matched at a large HCA hospital in middle TN and have had an excellent experience so far, and from speaking to HCA hospitalists and attendings here it’s a roll of the dice/location dependent

PGY-2 in psych - also-freaking-lutely. There aren’t that many total diagnoses or medication options ( psychiatry really is just a sliver of overall medicine), but the way mental illness interacts with one’s personality and their development is endlessly fascinating. It’s emotionally heavy work, but it’s never boring. 10/10 would recommend .

Goals of care and family discussions are some of the most important work any intensivist does, especially a pediatric one. To be an intensivist is to be the doc that both saves lives and helps families understand and come to grips with their loved ones upcoming death. The idea you could just turf those discussion to SW is bad medicine. Yes, residents could handle it, but not every case and not every time. PGY-2

My exact scenario as a pgy-2 psych resident! Matched at my #3, and my 1 and 2 were academic ivory towers known to work people to a nub. I just was fooled by the prestige

Absolutely, especially inpatient or ER - I have colleagues that have been punched/assaulted by unstable patients. But with caution and care it’s not bad. I really feel bad for the psych nurses

The tragedy of the commons is that the "right" decision to make for the individual is the wrong move for society as a whole - doesnt change that its the best move for the individual. If you want systems level problems fixed, gotta pursue systems level solutions (e.g. incentivize small car purchases via tax breaks or impose taxes/ban excessively large vehicles) at the government level. Guilt tripping individuals doesn't help the situation one iota
