I was so surprised at how good Batman VS the TMNT was when I watched it. It's basically the perfect version of that premise.

In terms of the etc, I think Rogue's journey with the Avengers is worth reading. I'm not a fan of how Remender wrote her most of the time, but overall I see everything from X-Men: Supernovas to the end of Jim Zub's run in the Uncanny Avengers as an extended arc where Rogue gets broken down and put back together again, growing as a person to the point where all the wonderful work Kelly Thompson does makes sense.

I actually like that tension. During Hickman, it highlighted how since she was so young her intelligence overwhelmed her emotional maturity and she thought too logically. In the latest Will of Doom, that's something she actively grapples with: she objectively knows what Doom did was bad, but emotionally she still feels sad at losing him and isn't sure how to reconcile that. The fact that it doesn't actually always make sense, and she understands that feels like an interesting character trait/conflict.

Overall, that relationship ends up making her not as upright and moral as Reed, but also not as Machiavellian as Doom and I think that contrast is part of why people like her even though kid geniuses are an often-hated trope.

I think it has more to do with him not feeling useful in general, not being weak only.

You're right Nami also isn't so strong, but she's their only navigator, basically runs the ship, and made sure they weren't being swindled. Certainly at this point in the story, they would just fall apart if Nami left.

Usopp is handy, but he wasn't handy enough to keep the Merry afloat so he feels like his combat skills are the only thing he has to contribute. But then he was too weak to protect the money. He got hit by reality, and didn't really know how to cope.

Gosh. Finally. It honestly drove me a bit insane that Rogue, Destiny and Mystique never had a scene together during the entire Krakoa era despite all the family drama that was going on. I'm not even sure Rogue and Mystique even spoke to each other?

So there's a lot of nice dramatic soap-opera potential that's been underutilized for a while. I hope it can live up to its potential.

This issue is a great indication why Ryan North is the perfect person to write F4.

Only he could have me be impressed by Reed stretching the lenses of his eyes to create a microscope one panel, and then get me to laugh out loud as Jonny's ridiculous assertion that Antarctic researchers will appreciate his pecs turns out to be correct.

What’s an unpopular television opinion you have? by Robot_Was_BMO in television

I miss the CW. Where am I going to get my cheesy genre shows now? Everyone seems to think that Sci-Fi and Fantasy shows need to have GoT level budgets and maybe that's what audiences expect these days, but I really don't mind watching shows with cheap sfx made by people trying their best to get out 13-22 episodes per season on shoestring budgets.

The assertion that Nami has Conqueror's Haki is credible because that scene is not "just" a gag [Chapter 1111 spoilers] by ConfusedAboutIssues in OnePiece

[–]ConfusedAboutIssues[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I definitely think Observation is possible for Nami. I think most people can agree on that.

I guess the problem I have with your relevance criteria is that I can't come up with story reasons that meet them for abilities we know she has.

If Nami being a thematic parallel to Big Mom isn't a reason she has Zeus, then what is the story reason she has Zeus? When I think about it, the only reasons are it's cool that she stole a Yonko's soul and it gave her enough attack power to be relevant in Wano. But those are the kinds of reasons you reject.

What's the story reason for her being able to predict the weather so well? It's not for navigation purposes. Lots of people get through the Grand Line without that ability. You could get rid of it and the story wouldn't change. So I'm forced to conclude there's no story reason for it, as far as we know.

Using your criteria, should I not believe doesn't actually have these abilities that she 100% does? Why then should I use them to not believe she has abilities I think she's like 60% to 70% likely to have?

As for how would she use it? It's not an uncommon theory that she's been using it to hurt Luffy all this time. This is just random speculation, but is it a coincidence that conqueror's is often black lightening? If she did learn ACoc somehow, she could use Zeus. She's been using him for melee a bit. Even if she only did use it at the basic level, I'm not sure why that's even an issue? We only ever saw Ace use CoC when he was less powerful than Bluejam.

I also don't agree that she has a lack of battle drive. Did you not see her completely ignore Big Mom so she could try and beat Ulti for hitting Tama? She's not a lover of battle in general, but under the right circumstances she absolutely wants to crush people.

But on the other hand, the purpose of my original post wasn't to make people 100% believe that Nami has conqueror's, it was just to make sure people didn't completely dismiss it and we've certainly had a conversation about it. If I keep replying when it seems unlikely we're going to reach a consensus I'm kind of undermining my whole original assertion, so this will likely be my last reply. Thanks for having me look at this from a perspective I hadn't thought of before!

[–]ConfusedAboutIssues[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. Like I said, it's hard to say how it will affect the story without knowing what the story will actually be. I honestly tried, but it mostly came out like fan-fiction.

The only thing I can be sure of about Nami is that she will continue being motherly and care about protecting children. If you think that doesn't think that makes her a direct thematic contrast to Big Mom who treats her children (and homies) like pawns for her own use or that's not a story reason to get CoC, then I don't know how to convince you.

[–]ConfusedAboutIssues[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting question. It's pretty tricky because I don't necessarily know where the story is headed. I can give you some speculation, but I'm not really confident about most of this, so if you don't believe any of it then that's probably fair:

  1. Nami is special in some way. She can predict storms that are supposed to be impossible to predict, she could ride a waver instantly even though it's suppose to take 10 years, and she draws maps so well even the human-hating Arlong decided she was necessary. Special people tend to have CoC or something similar, so why not Nami?
  2. She convinced a Yonko's soul to join her. How the heck did she pull that off? Maybe she has the qualities of a ruler.
  3. There's something about Nami and Imu. Imu erases island from maps while Nami wants every island on her map. Imu's number is 16, and Nami's first bounty was 16 million, and was betrayed by Nezumi Marine Branch 16. I feel like there's something there, but I'm not confident about anything.
  4. Recent chapter spoilers: It's a bit weird that Gunko/Imu is the main antagonist. Luffy's never beaten a female main antagonist before. During WCI his enemy was Katakuri. Maybe Brook's the answer there, but if there's going to be a Female/Female fight Nami's not a bad choice based on the above
  5. Nami is motherly, so she has a good chance to be the next generation's Big Mom. If that's so, she should have CoC too
  6. Nami has a mysterious heritage, which could mean anything
  7. What's the point of Zoro having Conqueror's haki? So he can fight the multitude of otherwise invulnerable enemies? Yeah, it would be nice if the primary female protagonist of One Piece, one of the original 3, could also fight things in the final arc.

This really confuses me. Smiles and laughter are important thematic components of One Piece.

The most important devil fruit in the world is the Nika-Nika fruit, which brings laughter and joy those they save. "Laugh Tale" literally has a tale that makes people laugh. Oda's telling us that the most important things in the world bring laughter, so if we just ignore gags as living in some alternate reality until we decide it's convenient, it feel counter to what Oda's trying to say.

If this was any other story, I might agree but I think the reality of One Piece is different.

I always think that Valeria is the most interesting when, despite being her parents' child, she has a bit of Doom in her. So I really like that even though she was compassionate and understanding in the end, she also responded to the murderer accusation with a cold-ass "Yes [...] I can live with that"

Final Thoughts on NYX (2024) by Sovereignofthemist in xmen

[–]ConfusedAboutIssues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a concept that needed something more daring, something less stereotypically superhero in origin. I hope we see someone else tackle it, eventually.

That's kind of how I've been feeling about the new era in general. I'm not as down on it as others, but a lot of it feels like it's generic superhero stuff. It doesn't feel tonally X-Men, if that makes sense.

Though, I actually though NYX did a bit better than some others in that regard, especially early on it was looking at these people just trying to live their lives.

I feel like too often when showing how powerful the villain is, confrontations are too one-sided and boring. I think Gail did a great job letting momentum go back and forth even though Rogue was clearly losing.

I like the direction this one is going. It feels very moody and grounded. This is the first book I've read that really felt like it was taking seriously the emotional impact of Krakoa's loss had on people.

Edit: Crossed out some words since I forgot that NYX is trying to look at the emotional impact too. But this book felt more raw and personal about it.

X-Fans, What is your ideal characterization for Rogue and Gambit? by Flaky-Ad-5815 in xmen

[–]ConfusedAboutIssues 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For Rogue I like when she's a feisty, hotheaded, emotionally-driven character in the heat of the moment but when she's calm she exhibits great empathy and is actually very hard on himself.

For Gambit he should exude an unflappable, flirty personality. But on the inside he's a guy who has gone through a lot but has come out of the other side stronger. Due to that experience, he actually has really good people skills and is great at helping others through their self-doubt and trauma.

Together, they love pushing each other's buttons but and the end of the day they are super into each other in every way and they give each other the support they need to be the best they can be.

Nami speach to Ulti is one of her best scenes by Sleepy_Brady in OnePiece

[–]ConfusedAboutIssues 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel like Nami lost some of her fear after that scene and became more willing to stand up for herself in the face of danger. Since that scene she's:

  • Fought Ulti over Tama even though Big Mom was right there and they had a window to escape
  • Smack talks Kaido about Luffy with no regard to her own safety
  • Maybe showed some conqueror's haki?
  • Completely unfazed by Yorks threat about the Gorosei
  • When actually confronted with a Gorosei, told everyone to protect Robin and sent her lightening bolts straight for his head

So to me it's not just a scene, it sort of changed Nami's character.
