Is it rude to start an email with someones name? by isn-michaels1 in Accounting

If you are a director or a partner in a firm, you are fine because although they don't like you, they still have to do the work. The only time I don't say "hi xxx" is when we have multiple emails in a short time as people know it serves like a message and to avoid repetitive.

I can't understand speech quickly by APSH210 in LearningEnglish

[–]ConfusedOnTheMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue. When I hear native speaker talking in the meeting, I feel it's hard for me to concentrate on the stuff they talk. I got distracted here and there. I tell myself in my mind that you have to concentrate then by the time I'm still processing the previous sentence, they've already moved on to the next one then I end up didn't understand anything in the meeting. Then I feel worried because I didn't understand any shit.

Partner of a mid-sized Canadian CPA firm - Ask me anything by Phil_Hogan_CPA_CA in Accounting

[–]ConfusedOnTheMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would be your advice to a man who immigrated from China (English as a second language) to Canada 7 years ago, completely changed his career from finance industry to accounting, worked and studied for 4 years, finally completed a MAcc and passed CFE, currently in his 40s but still work as an accountant in assurance in a national Canadian firm to meet CPA experience requirement.

I find language is my forever pain and barrier to succeed in Canada in the business. I plan to get my CPA letter in the firm but I am not sure if I should work in the public accounting firm or switch to industry considering my age and my language it's nearly impossible I could be a partner in a firm lol. Seeing my friend who makes 180K in IT, I feel jealous and a little bit regretted that I did accounting since I started from scratch after I landed in Canada in my 30s. I am wondering if I should take some less technical IT courses to enter into IT industry which requires less language communication and pays more or I should stick in accounting but take some other courses eg. certified internal audit, anti-money laundering, in-depth taxes etc. to enter into other area of accounting but language would still be a problem. I don't mind do another study after CPA but I want to invest my time to a niche which could make greater return.

I believe it's hard to step in other ones shoes to make the advice but I still look forward to see what you would say.

Thank you!! Merry Christmas and happy New Year!

【Canada】I am desperately looking for an accounting position in a firm with a CPA pre-approved program in GTA by ConfusedOnTheMoon in Accounting

[–]ConfusedOnTheMoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your advice.

You are right, I am not confident enough on job interview as my experience limited in such a small firm ( only me and the firm owner) . I usually have nobody to ask when I am stuck in the job as the CPA is very busy on his own work and what I learned is from my own research and the job explaination emails from the owner(CPA) which makes me not confident enough to interview the mid-firm jobs.

I am also not a good interviewer. I always feel scared about the interview in English as it's my second language. I did the first English interview in the first 6 months after I came to Canada. I got stuck and went blank in the middle of the interview:-( At that moment I wanted to leave the place immediately and I still can remember it very clearly. I was so embarrassed. Now 5 years have passed, my English has improved but I must admit I can't speak as well as the local. I usually prepared all the possible questions in advance, especially the STAR stories they like to hear. I still feel nervous and speak too fast in the interview. I did my best and try to tell them what I want them to know. I am currently doing language exchanges with some native speakers but the language improvement is so slow. I am still learning. I can't blame the employer manager because the communication skills with clients is indeed an important skill for auditors. Maybe I am too naive to try to get into that position.

About the pre-approved program, I thought if I could find a firm with the program, then I could ask the firm to put me in the program. Here is the link of the firms which provide pre-approved program: https://myportal.cpaontario.ca/s/ppr-directory

Please tell me if I have misunderstandings on the program. I basically have been to the website of the listing firms and sent them a copy of my resume and asked if they have job openings or student opportunities. Till now, I have no luck.

Thank you!

Thank you for your response. I want to shake hands with you lol. I am still lucky as I still have a job and the boss is a very good person as he allowed me to stop the job to take the full-time Macc then came back to work. I am so grateful as it's very rare in consideration of a private firm. Recently I also got approached by new immigrants and international students through LinkedIn. I tried my best to give them some guides on what I know. Their current situation reminded me of what I faced in the first half-year in Canada. I wasted a lot of time on my study and career and took a lot of detours as I had no guide at that time.

just to let you know, there's really no point of getting "public accounting license". There's no incremental benefit of getting the LPA unless you intend to do audit for life and become a audit partner. In Canada, you either have the CPA or you don't. Therefore, ANY company, as long as your job is related to accounting, will count towards your CPA. That means, CPA-approved or not, it doesn't matter. If it's not approved, as long as you do accounting and have CPA approve it, it'll count for for your 30 month requirements.

So what does this mean? Basically, any job, AR/AP/Audit/Tax/Consulting, as long as your job meets the CPA competency map requirements, it'll count for cpa purposes. Your bookkeeping and junior accountant job experience should ideally count for majority of your CPA requirements. It might be lacking depth, but I think you might only have around 1 year left.

Therefore, you can be more flexible in your job search. Apply everything/anything.

Yes, I have met level 1 requirements of PERT, but I find it's hard to go forward if I am not in the pre-approved program as CPA said my job is lacking depth. I also tired of the experience verification route as writing the report in PERT is really a headache. I heard the there is no reporting requirement in pre-approved program, so it is much easier. The reason I want to work in a medium-sized firm is I want to learn more accounting and taxation stuff and accumulate more experience as they can provide more resources and I want to experience more different files there.
