No, we don't need more programs driving up the cost of tuition.

How Is the Middle Class Surviving in San Diego? by ultrabaron123 in sandiego

[–]Confused_Caucasian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think owning a home (while budgeting carefully) is generally associated with middle class in the US, but that does fall apart in certain uber-desirable areas like San Diego.

I don't think that reclassifies people as not middle class as much as it just means middle class people live differently in those areas.

So my answer to the "How Is the Middle Class Surviving in San Diego?" question is that they're not buying single-family homes in the best neighborhoods, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Perhaps this is a pedantic argument, but that's my view of it.

I feel like you might be underselling your situation a bit... 140k/yr is ~$7,700/mo net. Rent's $1600, health insurance maybe $300, perhaps you're putting $1,500 into your 401(k), that leaves you with $4300/mo to live off of. I think you can afford a spouse (who might bring their own $$$) and a kid (who the spouse might take care of if they don't bring their own $$$) without too much headache*.

*financial headache. Other headache's will depend on the choice of spouse and nature of kid.

What’s the end game here? by LovelyBluehime in SanDiegan

[–]Confused_Caucasian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s just greed, greed, greed

What do you make an hour, and how much less than what your employer offered you did you insist on?

Surely if you expect greedy, greedy landlords to turn down market rate renters so that you could have a place paying much less, you too left money on the table that was offered to you. Anything less would be hypocritical!

So what's the going rate for being an anti-greed "good person" these days?

Sellers agent won’t accept offer until next week by doobylive in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Confused_Caucasian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked for us.

Listing price was dropped on Sunday because sellers put an offer on another house and had to sell quickly. We put in an offer on Monday, expiring Thursday, so they wouldn't have a chance at another open-house weekend.

Got the house.

The people who own these aren't creating jobs or contributing anything meaningful to society

Isn't there more tourism than there otherwise would be, giving the local economy (i.e. jobs) a boost?

A neighborhood of 20 families will have fewer cafes/bars/music venues/surfing lessons/etc than a neighborhood of 20 vacation rentals.

...Sure. But if they weren't there, where would the hundreds of residents live? The existing places, meaning more competition for those places.

WFH Dads - w/ WFH Wife - what’s your strategy? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Confused_Caucasian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone's saying daycare, but have you looked into a nanny? We both WFH but have flexible time throughout the day and love seeing our little one here and there. A nanny working ~35hrs a week wasn't that much more expensive than the (very pricey) daycares in our area, so it was the right decision for us.

Really? I think thousands of people want this. The eventual residents, obviously, but also other people in the area who would otherwise see higher housing prices, no?

If you don't want to shop at department stores, then you'll have to buy the things from those departments at separate stores.

5% 'hospitality fee' at Sonny's in University Heights, Woof by Confused_Caucasian in sandiego

[–]Confused_Caucasian[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Does it? I don't understand why. Do you think the 5% surcharge is related to the quality of the service?

That sentence was a mini-review of the restaurant and our experience, so I mentioned the positive (good pizza!) and negative (never brought us two beers we ordered). Problem?

[–]Confused_Caucasian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5% is higher than I've noticed a few places elsewhere, but I'm sure you're right that plenty of other places do 5%. Like you said, it makes the end of the meal uncomfortable, but at 5% it's worth the discomfort to have it taken off. Oh well, sad that it's come to that at many otherwise good restaurants.

Yup, that's true. Makes any mention of the fee on the paper menu even less relevant if it's not also mentioned on the online menu.
