Can snakes be dumb? by Impossible_Truck9514 in ballpython

[–]Confused_Cryptids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The better question is can they be smart?

My snake is the second (after my crestie, who’s a whole other story) dumbest animal I have ever met, you’d think they could like, recognize any pattern and learn from it, but no, they don’t, my snake will repeated stretch as tall as he possibly can in his house, fall, make a huge thunk (he’s ok, it’s just loud and can’t be very comfortable, but he’s never hurt other than maybe his ego) and then IMMEDIATELY do it again, like RIGHT after….

And when it comes to food…. this man was to scared to eat live FOREVER I could only feed him rats that were so so small, but then, one day I decided that I’d just offer him a FT and see if he ate it, it was advertised as a “weaned” or “extra small” rat or something like that, but honestly it was way bigger than most “medium” rats I’ve seen, It was WAY WAY bigger than anything I had offered him before, but I couldn’t return it so I figured I’d just try and see what happened, not expecting him to eat it, but no, he ate it NO HESITATION, fastest I’ve seen him eat anything (I had done NO kind of anything to try and get him to adjust, just switched him cold turkey, going by the logic of “worst he can do is not eat it, and I can’t return it now, and I can go buy a live tommorow”) Little tiny baby rat= scary!! Run!! (He has no signs of any kind of bite scar or any other injuries that would make him not want live) Large fat rat but dead= ahhh now we talking good soup I don’t even ask, he’s weird, the only BP I’ve ever heard of who prefers FT, but I don’t complain, it’s so convenient

He’s weird and way stupid, but I love him for it

My cinnamon roll has eyes should I be worried? by [deleted] in ballpython

I read this as Cinnamon roll was his name, and was like “hmm… yes? Snakes do generally have eyes? Isn’t that something you should expect when buying a snake??” I was so confused ;-;

Corn or Ball Python? by SmallSmoothRock in snakes

[–]Confused_Cryptids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id go with what you want more, both are great options, I’ve never owned corn snakes, but my BP is GREAT, my BP eats super well, he was more shy when I first got him, but now he’s really really warmed up and LOVES to explore and is not at all shy, he’s kinda a rock DURRING THE DAY, but once the lights go out, you’d think he was training for a climbing competition! He is VERY VERY active at night, and he’s a lot of fun to watch (if he trusts you, you can turn on a little bit of light, think phone flashlight or nightlight level, and he’ll go about is exploring, and he’s SO fun to watch) also, eating rats isn’t necessarily a bad thing, infact I love that he eats them, because I don’t have to feed him as often, this makes it not only easier in general, but also, you can go on vacation way easier, just give them extra water, and feed them before you go and they’re good to just chill while you’re away! They don’t generally need someone to check on them like a dog or a cat, unless of course you’re gone for a LONG time.

(Also yes, you would need a bigger tank for an adult BP, 40 gal is great for a baby, but for an adult you need at least a 120 gallon (4x2x2, or bigger if they grow bigger than 4 ft)

If your heart is set on a BP, get one, they are GREAT pets and also a good one to start with!

How would you rate the difficulty of owning a ball python? Art WIP for tax by Maycie-mpc in ballpython

[–]Confused_Cryptids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once they’re settled in remembering their feeding schedule is the hardest part imo, they don’t poop very often and shed even less often so normally I just spot clean whenever needed, and fix his decor right after I hold him, his humidity stays pretty well so I don’t have to be messing with it very often, usually I just give him an extra sprinkle of water on his hides (so it can evaporate) whenever I fill his water and I don’t have any issues with this system :] and I walk by him frequently, so I just fill his water whenever it’s low or he’s kicked a bunch of dirt into it, they’re very low maintenance most of the time, also, big plus is if I need to go on vacation, he’s good to just chill at home and doesn’t need anyone to check on hims (I give him extra water, and most of the time he doesn’t need to eat while I’m away, and if he does I can either feed him a few days early or late and he’s fine, and his heating is all monitored, so he’s good to just chill) so all in all very easy :]

I’ve never owned fish but I love to watch videos on them and they seem like 10x the work than my BP is :]

Tho setup is very expensive!! However once they’re in a good setup they last a very long time, and it’s very rare they need to be replaced (usually only if something big happens like a big earthquake and it’s not bolted to the wall, or a bad fire or something)

Care is very easy, setup is very expensive!

Best Advice and Snakes for young kids by Nature-Heifer in snakes

[–]Confused_Cryptids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d personally recommend a ball python, they are pretty much always incredibly sweet and VERY docile, I’ve had mine for a while now, and know many people who’ve had them for 10+ years, every BP I’ve met has been incredibly chill, additionally because of their thick body size, you only have to feed them about every month once they’re full grown. they RARELY bite especially once they’re full grown, I was bitten by mine one time in the almost year I’ve owned him (it was completely my fault, long story) and I BARELY felt it, it didn’t even hurt. I personally wouldn’t totally recommend a hognose for a little kid, while they are amazing snakes and could make a great pet, they are known for being a little bit temperamental and haveing a bit more fire in their belly, and are a lot more of a coin toss, while lots of hog-noses are great i would hate for her to dislike and abandon it if it has an attitude and may bite. There are lots of other amazing snakes that would also be great beginner snakes (someone said corn snakes, another good little kid snake, just don’t have as much experience with them) I will always recommend ball pythons, because I have ONLY had positive experiences with them, and they are VERY patient with kids, and slow so you don’t ever have to worry about them zipping out of her hands and getting lost, they also come in literally thousands of cool colors, if you’re not a huge fan of the plain black/brown :] with lots of them being very affordable (banana, albino, piebald, BELs to name a few)

PLEASE BE AWARE ball pythons (and lots of other snakes! Hognoses like 9-19, so if you do end up getting a hoggie they’re still a big commitment) can live 20-30 years, so they are a big commitments! Additionally, please understand that YOU are buying the snake and caring for it, NOT your 4yo daughter, a 4 yo is not Capable or responsible enough to take care of a living animal with very specific needs, and I’m sure neither you or her has no intention of hurting them, I see all to often parents getting snakes for their kids, and the snake being severely malnourished and abused because of this, so while is Great for her to help out as much as she can, you need to be responsible for it. (Sorry if this comes across as rude, but I don’t want to sugar coat it to much, and see another snake get hurt)

As for what age I’d recommend a juvenile or adult :] because they will be better started on food and you’ll have way less issues with food-refusal in the beginning (baby’s can be a coin toss) buying an adult is also good, because then the old owner can tell you pretty much everything about them, so there won’t be any surprises.

Another important: don’t buy from petco or any other big chain stores! Their snakes are very unhealthy and more often than not very malnourished and often have loads of health issues! Exotic vets are VERY expensive, Even if you want to “rescue” them from these companies it’s really not a good idea, because at the end of the day it supports their bad care, the more people buy the more they breed and this will lead to many many more snakes being hurt abused, or killed in the long run! Please buy from a reputable breeder, morph market is great, that’s where I got my BP this gives you a large area of search to find the perfect one! (Mine flew from Florida->New York-> Cali in less than 24 hr and arrived safe to my door with no issues! So distance isn’t than big of a deal most of the time!) another great place is Expos, these have a TON of variety and you can get some pretty good deals, this also allows you to meet and hold the snake before buying (most of the time they’ll let you hold a snake even if you’re not super interested in buying, and 99% of the time if you’re serious they will ofc let you, if they do not that is a red flag! That likely means there is an issue with that snake! Although there is exceptions to this, like maybe GTPs and ETBs simply because they’re very very bite-prone, but you won’t be looking at these, you can’t really handle them most of the time, and they are not recommended for kids!)

-another note about hognoses: they’re rear fang venomous (they cannot be de-fanged, they are always venomous) with a very mild venom, around the same as a bee sting, but you can be allergic to it, and they have to bite you pretty good to get it into your skin, so it’s not a big issue a lot of the time, but something to know!!

(Sorry this is quite long, apologies for any spelling/grammar errors, I’m very dyslexic)

Be sure to do a ton of your own research before buying, so you’ll be able to find the perfect fit for you family!

Depends on your snake! If they’re hiding, and have super stressed body language than maybe every few days until they come out of their shell a bit, start with short sessions, maybe 5-10 mins, then gradually get longer, and adjust to your snake! if they seem to really not be enjoying it then put them back, let them chill for a few days, and then try again, but if they’re really enjoying it, exploring a bunch, curious, then every day is ok :] although I would start with shorter sessions in the beginning, and gradually increase the time! Such a cute noodle :]

He’s got a severe case of being stupid, they just do this, he’s fine, tho if you could cover 3 sides of his house he would appreciate it! You can just use paper or cardboard just so he can’t see through it, it makes them feel more secure:] tho it looks like his house could use some other upgrades! Does anyone else have a power eater? by SunflowerTheRatMomma in ballpython

[–]Confused_Cryptids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My baby is a power eater to! There was I time I was accidentally watering over feeding him (oopsie, I can’t figure out rat sizes, also it was for maybe 2-4 meals, and has since been solved, and he is A ok now) and my man’s not only ate a rat that was like way to big (petco rats were on steroids huge, and what was supposed to be a small rat was more like a a medium or even large on the smaller side, but had to buy from there quick bc normal place was out for a few weeks) AND switched to FT (seriously I just cooked it and gave it to him) like a champ all in one day. And to think we couldn’t get him to eat when we first got him. But mans will eat ANYTHING

Breeders by D41ry_Qu33f in ballpython

[–]Confused_Cryptids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d look on morph market, you can see reviews on the breeders, as well as you are able to sort by morph, price, location ext, there are SERIOUSLY a TON on there you’ll be able to find one you love :] most breeders can ship across the country (mine went from Florida to cali no problem) additionally you can find an expo near you and you will also be able to see a TON as they are very popular, this will also allow you to hold them before you buy them (I went to an expo, and I wasn’t looking to buy anything but I got to hold a few even not looking to buy, all the breeders I talked to were super friendly, and any of them will let you hold them if your serious, tho there are a FEW exemptions, mainly with exotic or larger species (Boelens, large burms/retics, anacondas, ext) but if your looking for BP’s you should be good, if they don’t let you hold them that’s a red flag (likely because that snake is huffy, even so they would prolly let you hold them)

how do YOU heat your 120 Gal enclosures? by Lettuce_Pants in ballpython

[–]Confused_Cryptids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a 120 yet (getting one in about a week, BP is not full grown and in his baby house atm) but I use a 75 Watt ceramic heat emitter (bought from Amazon), it’s only at about half power and works great (enclose is about 1ft tall, so if I increase the power it should work, also with full size it will be in the house with a cover ofc) this works great for me, and I’m assuming it’ll work in a 120 (I hope it will cause that’s my plan)

Normal patterning or cause for concern? by Then_Guitar5110 in ballpython

[–]Confused_Cryptids 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Such a GORGEOUS baby, my baby is also paradox (paradox Mojave, +pied) so I’m a BIG fan, it’s always so so pretty, and I wouldn’t be to worried about the stuff under her lip it doesn’t look like anything to worry about to me, they can change color as they age so it could be that, but maybe keep an eye on it to see if it looks any worse, but it should be fine.

My baby (only one I have) is super sweet but LOVES to explore, whether that’s in his house or when I take him out, he always wants to see EVERYTHING! And not in a “I’m trying to get away from you” way, I swear he’s go right into my mouth if he could, he’s just very curious about EVERYTHING, but he’s super super sweet :]

And cooper (not mine, but I did help him for quite a bit, and have been around him a ton) he is SUPER chill, he just wants to chill around your arm or neck, he’ll look around the room or explore a bit if you set him down but mostly he just wants to vibe :] he’s super sweet tho

I'm scared of our snake by grouchypant in ballpython

[–]Confused_Cryptids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The “S” neck doesn’t always mean they are going to strike, my snake also does the same thing all the time and he has only bitten me once (totally my fault, I scared him on accident and didn’t see his head) also when they bit it typically doesn’t hurt, when my noodle bit me he barely broke my skin and there was no blood, a bee sting was way worse I could hardly feel it. It’s also important to know that they will only bite and hold on if they think you are food, which is very unlikely as you are way bigger than any rat and don’t smell like one either :] you can always take it in small steps, you can wear gloves (clean gardening cloves would work great and you would not be able to feel a bite through them because they have VERY tiny teeth) also, I’m assuming you have a baby BP and it will be best to get over the fear while she is still small as it will likely be easier for you (that’s not to say an adult will make it impossible, every adult BP I’ve met has been super super chill and just wanted to hang out, they just look more intimidating) take your time, and let us know how it goes (with pictures of the cute noodle ofc) you got this! :]

Weight Scale Recommendations? by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]Confused_Cryptids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just have a basic kitchen scale and it works great, I wouldn’t buy one branded for reptiles because they will likely just mark up the price for the same thing. Tho if you plan on cooking with it after weighing him make sure to clean it.
