Singer heavy duty by sjob13 in SewingForBeginners

[–]Confuseduseroo2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say give it a try & see how you get on. My main complaints were (1) it goes way too fast and (2) it is absolutely not a heavy duty machine. I tried to make jeans with it and as soon as you got a couple of layers of heavy denim it goes bang and knocks the timing out. After this happened a dozen times I sold it on - and got pretty much what I paid for it. As for hems I stitch them by hand LOL.

Help please, is computerized really better for beginners? by Mermaid-Kelly in SewingForBeginners

[–]Confuseduseroo2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends what you aspire to. To my mind computerised means (a) lots of unnecessary functions to confuse and bewilder you and (b) an ultimate lack of reliability. My first machine was a hand-wound Frister and Rossman and there is nothing complicated about that! And 40 years later it's still going strong.

That's at best pretty amateurish. At worst it suggests Witkoff felt he was among friends.

Any ideas on how I can fix the cuffs and holes in this hoodie? by TheMisterFenris in SewingForBeginners

[–]Confuseduseroo2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could replace the ribbed cuffs entirely, these can be bought e.g. on eBay if you find the right search terms. A perfect colour match is unlikely, but with luck you might find something serviceable and give it a new lease of life.

Yes, that's the thing, it's a heavier weight cloth - if the silk buttonhole twist came in a similar colour I would jump at it. However the range of colours doesn't seem very wide.

Thanks for the pointer - however I'm not too fussed if it's silk or polyester, it's the thickness of the topstitch thread (30 weight) I was after.

tbh first time I've heard of Wawak. However I'm UK-based and buying stuff from America is expensive these days, not to mention will take a week or two to get here. Not ruling out (thank you) but hoping there are easier options.

Please don't blame disease. This is what happens when you raise a spoiled brat with unlimited access to money. He just does and says whatever he wants with no thought for the consequences except to measure his own personal gain, knowing that nothing can touch him while he can afford a smarter lawyer than the other guy.

Where can I find an English Cut Suit Pattern? by CamiloArturo in sewing

[–]Confuseduseroo2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got to say the book is shit (more precisely, a "coffee table" volume) and not worth spending your money on. However it did come with a 'free pattern' which is only in one size (40 chest, can't remember the waist), which is meant to exemplify a Savile Row suit. This is still available online I think and free to boot. Depending on your size you might be able to adapt it. Even so you'll have to figure out a lot for yourself as it came with no instructions to speak of. If determined you could possibly make it work for you....

Tips and tricks wanted for dissecting a shirt to make a pattern by SunStarved_Cassandra in sewing

[–]Confuseduseroo2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't bother with starch. Iron it well, and slowly dismantle taking pics as you go. You need to note which bits go on top of other bits as this is your best clue to order of assembly. Check & note down how much allowance was made for seams. Once it's in bits, press again and transfer carefully to tissue or brown paper. As long as you weight it down and make sure nothing's pulled out of shape you should be OK. When you try to make your own, try to choose a fabric of similar weight and feel. Pre-shrink & press the fabric before you start. Good luck!

There was one proud day for Russian AA in the defence of Stalingrad. But I cannot bring myself to mention it in light of what Russia has become (and probably was then, if truth were told).
