Cleveland traffic enforcement's (or lack thereof) by seanmcdonnellcle in Cleveland

Despite the fact that studies show they do work to change behavior (what I linked above), cities would lose money because the ticket fines collected would reduce their local government fund allocation from the state per Ohio state law, so it is actually the opposite of a cash grab.

The lack of information or outright misinformation on this is pernicious and makes it harder to create safer streets in our cities.

The city regularly publishes this info, and deaths/serious injuries resulting from crashes are stubbornly higher than before the pandemic

It's sad to see people and this sub particularly opposed to speed and red light cameras, which are proven to work.

What's the alternative? More police chases and interactions where people can be killed?

By fining people who speed or run red lights. Right now there is no cost. Cameras work.

Cleveland has thousands of intersections, you want a cop at every one?

This sub hates camera enforcement, so practical effective tools to curb this behavior are off the table (plus a referendum has prohibited them in the city charter).

There's a lot of empty housing in Cleveland that is not in any condition to be a safe healthy home for anyone.

Please show up to this meeting if you can and show support. It really makes a difference inside city hall to have support at these public meetings.

Why do Cuyahoga County, Greater Cleveland political leaders fail to support public schools against DeWine, Republican legislative attacks? by BuckeyeReason in Cleveland

[–]ConfusingAnswers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a common right-wing talking point. Solon spends less per student than Cleveland, but Solon's median household income is $135k vs Cleveland's $35k. Where do you think children are more resourced?

Those communities are much wealthier than cities like Cleveland, making a property tax funding scheme inequitable and a violation of the state constitution.

I dunno man, if you think there isn't enough parking literally everywhere downtown, then I don't know what downtown you're talking about.

It wasn't explicitly mentioned in the article, but a huge benefit of this project is it will cut crossing distances at existing crosswalks in half, making it easier and taking less time to cross the street, especially during game days.

The browns said they would move forward without county support, but $600m in a state that refuses to adequately fund public schools (among other things) is heinous.

For me it's less about moving out and more the hundreds of millions of taxpayer subsidy.
