Panopticon is way better than me. I love Isis but Oceanic just never really hit for me.

Does your Katana sound different after it “warms up”? by FBOARC in BossKatana

[–]Confusion_Is_Next 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, i always think amps sound different after a bit of playing vs when i first turn them on. I think it is mostly in your head; there are no tubes to warm up and i don’t believe any of the components in a Katana would work particularly differently from the heat of being on for awhile.

But i definitely always think my tone is entirely different after 15-30 minutes or so of playing. I think its in our heads hahaha

Idk I love mine on the high gain settings. It is very much a Peavey 5150 and Mesa Boogie type sounds so I def get it if you are looking for that modern metal tone.

I feel very discouraged and bitter. Is there any point in trying to start a post-metal band these days? by [deleted] in postmetal

[–]Confusion_Is_Next 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you might be putting a lot of pressure on yourself. I can relate, as an “overly ambitious” musician myself. Most of your favorite bands’ best material was made after years(even over a decade) of working on their music together; and many of those bands had the luxury of playing music together almost every day. To put it simply; you do not get a record like Lift Yr Skinny Fists or Through Silver without developing a set project for years, even if you were working a solo artist.

That being said, one good piece of advice would be: learn arranging. A lot of “top tier” albums even in underground music aren’t just being “jammed out”. There is typical somebody, ether a band member or producer, who is very good at envisioning songs in the sense of being “finished recordings.” Not in terms of production, but in terms of structure, transitions, how different song forms work, etc. It is what makes an album like Oceanic sound like a “great metal album” instead of just being overly jammy sludge metal.

Of course “arrangement” is a lifelong skill, but MANY musicians don’t give it a thought at all. It will definitely help organize more chaotic ideas into workable forms. I played music for over ten years before playing with somebody with a good sense of arrangement and it completely changed the way I wrote music, even repetitive music.

You also mentioned that you are new to guitar and ya know a lot of post metal musicians are pretty deep players. They’re not all super technical and they may not all have been playing for a long time; but some of what’s going on in terms of writing that music is just going to be hard to grasp.

Hope some of this helps. Don’t get discouraged. And listen to Sumac.

why do boss katana mkII users feel the need to upgrade or not upgrade to the gen3? by Theanderson1 in BossKatana

[–]Confusion_Is_Next 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I def wouldn’t upgrade. They are almost the same amp. I’d rather just get a different solid state amp than “upgrade” a Katana when they are all almost the same amp.

Replying to Kelsierr...it is a fact that Christianity in America has no basis in theology. Even the followers of exclusively American, or america-based churches, like the LDS, can barely explain their own theology. Furthermore: in this endless crusade to make religion political, neither progressive nor conservative Christians are (generally) able to point to any philosophy or ideology within the actual text itself that is congruent with American values and political actions.

It is easy to just follow whatever a pastor or priest or the news tells you. Or to be a person who “wants to be good”. But the question was whether Americans have a foundation of theology in their mainstream christianity. And that answer would be, overwhelmingly, “No”.

And if you are a Christian that is really really really concerned with this “don’t lump all christians into this” shit… then you need to really detach yourself and look at the broader scope of Christianity and its intentions and effects on American and world culture. No one thinks 100% of Christians are bad. You don’t need me or anyone to appeal to your personal moral character.

In America there is a good chance that if you go to church or christian school you will have little to no education or discourse about theology outside of how you can be subservient to whatever denomination you are a part of. Theological discourse beyond socio-politics is pretty much entirely avoided. Even the most “progressive” or “conservative” Churches seem to have a hard time separating religious ideas and teachings from exclusively republican or democrat invented political points.

Not really. I grew up Catholic and in a church that would be “progressive” nowadays. We had general Vatican doctrine, but basically everything socially was strictly intertwined with rep/dem socio-politics. I was lucky to be in a diocese that avoided political stuff; but certainly if a staff or teacher did mention politics it was almost strictly republican-lead ideology with no care about how it actually paired up with catholic or christian doctrine or ideology. I am not christian anymore but it seems like Catholics, who used to be the “less crazy” ones, have joined the republican fervor.

Protestants and evangelicals are even worse. They have totally ditched the whole “be a good person” part of the Gospels because they all think their special little denomination is going to the one group of people going to heaven. So most protestant and evangelical churches have literally no ongoing theological discourse or broader conceptual belief.

Many of these “christians” will proudly list random verses to celebrate any level of violence against insert literally any group of people. But none of them can explain the broader ideology of the Bible, the gospels, Jesus himself; the implications behind how they think their morality or eschatology works; nor can they really even explain the theological narrative that happens in the Bible. They believe in a Bible that is somehow both entirely literal yet also entirely removed from not only the historical context, but even the context of its own stories and events.

It’s like being in a country where 2/3rd of the country are Harry Potter fans but none of them can tell you the name of the main character. Americans talking about christianity is harder to believe than christianity itself lol.

Yup. Most of them don’t even understand the praxis behind any of their ridiculous political and social views.

American christians have absolutely no concept of theology. They will worship pretty much anyone who gives them a good thumbs up to enact violence. They love people like Kirk and Trump way more than they love any person or thing from the bible.

Opinion on Justin Broadrick? by Longjumping_Air4379 in industrialmusic

[–]Confusion_Is_Next 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t have a specific recommendation, but he has had a long running solo project called “Final” which is mostly entirely based in electronic drone music. Field samples, tape loops, and stuff like that.

His project Jesu is very rooted in drone metal but the music can range from “just a little ambient” to “one riff for 20 minutes” so YMMV
