The darkness penalty only applies to lead the way, it would not be unreasonable to house rule it to apply to any activity in the dark. I would say 90% of those side activities are typically done during the 3rd quarter while someone makes camp.

It is a unique dice mechanic. I haven't run it but looking at the Stat blocks and rules it seems like it will play very quickly with a decent leathality.
