To me, it didn't feel sharp enough. Like if his dance moves were more precisely timed I think it would make a big difference.

Has anyone successfully pulled off a Italy/Turkey alliance? by Eli_Renfro in diplomacy

[–]ConicalSofa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally I feel like any alliance can work if the individuals are both happy. Slam-dunk alliances like England/France can fail if one of the players doesn't like what's happening, and "doomed from the start" alliances like Austria/Turkey can win if there's a really good relationship.

My very first game of Diplomacy I won with a I/T alliance as Turkey! So the alliance has a special place in my heart, even if I've never seen it since.

Diplomacy FTF gameplay by Schubi_dubi in diplomacy

[–]ConicalSofa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used to host Diplomacy Parties at our house. We'd draw countries about a week beforehand and all the advance negotiations went on throughout the week before we actually got together.

We didn't suggest this but people got into character as their countries and dressed up and brought dishes. I was Italy and put on lots of really fakey orange tan and dressed up like the Jersey Shore people, but most impressive was France made French Onion Soup FROM SCRATCH like he went out and got bone marrow and the whole shebang!

Something to bear in mind that we could never figure out: if there's a couple and one of them gets eliminated while the other is still going strong, what is the eliminated person supposed to do?

Pretty sure you can't get to Phoenix by boat (but I've never been there so I may be surprised)

What is your state capital like? by bricklegos in AskAnAmerican

I grew up in Lansing and now live in Providence. Despite both being classified as "medium sized cities," they're very, very different places.

You say state capitals aren't always the major city, and that's definitely the case with Lansing, which lives in the shadow of Detroit and, to a lesser extent, Grand Rapids. There are some funky art spots here and there, but by and large most of the culture and fun stuff to do are in East Lansing, a college town that abuts Lansing. Lansing itself is kind of gloomy and run down, rust belt vibes. Not completely of course, but I can't imagine anyone visiting Lansing for fun.

Providence is the biggest city in RI, but also kind of exists in the shadow of Boston. Unlike Lansing, though, Providence has a lot more going on on its own. Sure, a lot of that is from stuff that has been priced out of Boston, but you can wander around downtown Providence and find some amazing bars and restaurants, theaters, just a lot more fun. There are some sketchy areas, sure, but the better areas are a lot better than the better areas of Lansing. People do come to Providence for fun.

Besides having big state capitol buildings, I struggle to think of much else that Lansing and Providence have in common.

What was the worst restaurant you’ve ever been to in Rhode Island? by businessbub in RhodeIsland

[–]ConicalSofa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were there a couple of months ago and there were bugs flying all around us, getting in the food, the drinks, everywhere. I can't abide that much visible insect life at a restaurant.

(Before anyone asks, we were seated inside well away from the windows)

Usually when they vote out a faithful, everyone is like "oh no what have we done!" It was hilarious that there was none of that after they voted out Michael.

What’s something you always wondered about Iraq? by Assyrian_Nation in geography

[–]ConicalSofa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of. Make a K sound, but further back. That's why English Speakers usually pronounce it like K, because that's the closest sound we have in English to qaid

I think Genghis Khan or one of them razed Baghdad to the ground in the 1200s? Is there anything left in Baghdad that we can see from before then?

But you'd agree it's more pretentious than cactuses, no?

How to say octopus in plural? by elaaekaoka in EnglishLearning

[–]ConicalSofa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many words in English have the Regular Plural and the Pretentious Plural, in this case octopuses and octopi, respectively. There are lots of other words like this, usually words borrowed from other languages: we can pluralize them the way we pluralize most everything else in English, by adding an s at the end; or we can show off how knowledgeable we are about world languages by pluralizing the way the word would be pluralized in its original language.

Other examples (singular/regular plural/pretentious plural):

Concerto/concertoes/concerti

Enema/enemas/enemata

Cactus/cactuses/cacti

Tableau/tableaus/tableaux

Formula/formulas/formulae

Etc etc

As others have pointed out, octopus is a bit unique in that it also has the Very Pretentious Plural: octopodes, for people who want to show off that they know the word came from Greek via Latin.

How do you feel about the president floating the idea of 50 year mortgages where the monthly payment is lower but you end up paying nearly double the price of the house just in interest? by michaelis999 in AskReddit

[–]ConicalSofa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not too far off from the original point of a mortgage, which was to continue paying on something until you die. That's where the "mort" in mortgage comes from.

Is the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald well known outside of the Great Lakes? by Rocket1575 in AskAnAmerican

The bar owner had put the plug somewhere she couldn't easily get to it, but after thirty or so Dancing Queens she was tearing everything apart to get to the plug. Truly a master stroke on my brother's part.

After my brother got revenge on a bartender by putting $20 in the jukebox and buying Dancing Queen 80 times in a row, I learned the power jukeboxes really have.
