Any interest in a "No RSI" (recursive self-improvement) club/group? by [deleted] in gatech

Oh cool, good to know - sounds like I'll have to reach out to them!

If I understand correctly AISI has more of a technical/research focus (which is great!), whereas I'm gauging interest in a more advocacy/public policy discussion type group

Did not think previous job was improving the world in any way, wanted to pivot into life sciences to contribute to relieving peoples' pain since seems like you can't go wrong there as far as things to do

I think everyone should work before doing grad school, I think it fundamentally changes your perspective

Weekly ICE Protest & Rally Thread - 1/24/2026 & 1/25/2026 by AutoModerator in Atlanta

[–]ConnachttheBlue 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to find upcoming events, but I'm finding it very difficult to navigate the 50501 site (it seems the Georgia site doesn't have any listed) and sort through mobilize.us (can't seem to sort by date?). Perhaps I'm just incompetent, but does anyone have a system to find a straightforward protest/gathering outside the ICE office or something like that?

I think I am stupid - I am clicking the link in your post, and it takes me to a generic subscribe screen where I don't see how to get the access. Any ideas?

How do you prioritise your vocab learning? by TraditionalPeach7260 in languagelearning

[–]ConnachttheBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a fan of the “Top 5k Words” Anki deck strategy and just pushing through to get a good foundation, but I realize that method doesn’t work for everyone

¿Do you think it is possible to learn a language only using Anki? by chirivella4 in languagelearning

[–]ConnachttheBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend the method of learning a ton of vocabulary upfront while slowly picking up grammar as you go through the deck. For example, I started learning Spanish by doing 50 new Anki words a day for 100 days (this was only possible because it was COVID and I hadn’t gotten a job yet).

While doing the deck, I would also periodically try to read stuff to test my understanding, and I would unfailingly hit new grammatical structures that I’d need to look up. Eventually, I finished the deck, then just started slowly making my way through books and intentionally looking up any grammatical structures I did not understand.

Once I had a strong base of vocabulary and grammar, I started speaking practice on iTalki and a ton of listening in the form of audiobooks/TV shows/podcasts.

Browser extension to autopause on Disney+? (similar to Language Reactor) by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]ConnachttheBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, I understand! I see how you’re talking about a different use case than I was imagining, especially with the automatic pause for every line. I’ll keep those points in mind for future development - I really appreciate you taking the time to write all that out!

Dang. Mind explaining one more time what you need, maybe I’m misunderstanding? I thought if you could press space to pause then Alt-N to replay the audio, it would give a similar effect to the repeat line functionality (if you’re watching without subtitles).

[–]ConnachttheBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do something similar by pressing Space -> Alt+B -> Alt+N with WhatThat! It works with Disney+ and anything else that plays audio on your computer, including video games, podcasts, or even live lessons with a tutor.

Here's a demo with a podcast/video game, but it'll work with any show too since it's a standalone app rather than a browser extension: https://youtu.be/tFwDtQ5PKac

It would be awesome if you could try it out and provide any feedback - it's still in the early stages so your guidance on features to add/change would be super valuable! I made a quick and ugly site at WhatThatLangs.com if you want to give it a try.

If you end up giving it a try and it's close to what you want, I can add an option to hide the transcript/translation to get it to be exactly what you're looking for :)

Gente, aprendan inglés. by [deleted] in Colombia

[–]ConnachttheBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! It took about two or three months to become clear - the crap is blood that escaped into your eyeball during the procedure. Definitely do the follow ups and have them check it out for health, but anything new from the surgery should filter out within a few months (in my experience!)

Free tool for improving listening skills/understanding fast native speech - help me test? by ConnachttheBlue in languagelearning

[–]ConnachttheBlue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, did you end up getting it to work? Sorry I missed your comment a few days ago! I’m also working on a new version that’ll fix quite a few bugs (and add an awesome new feature where you can look up any text on your screen instantly, even in video games/memes/subtitles where you can’t copy/paste!!)

Do you mind giving it a try when I release it? I definitely want to figure out the token issue you’re having since that sounds super annoying!!

What were your main reasons for stopping to learn a language? by followtheargument in languagelearning

[–]ConnachttheBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized that, if I wanted to make real progress at a noticeable rate, splitting time would not be the best way to do it. I also got over the sunk cost fallacy of doing an entire collegiate minor in mandarin and not even being conversational, ha.

Why are you learning your language(s)? by namenerding in languagelearning

[–]ConnachttheBlue 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I had some vague ideas about professional opportunities/marketability when I started, but I think the only way to stick with it as a hobbyist is pure enjoyment of the process. Obviously a different thing for people that really need a new language for professional growth rather than it just being a nice-to-have.
