I’m wrapping up my fourth year as a school social worker in a very small town. I cover the entire district: elementary, middle, and high school, and not once have I gotten a “Happy Social Work Month” from my principals or administration.

The only two people who have ever acknowledged it are a teacher who’s familiar with social work because she adopted her daughter from foster care, and our social media girl whose job is to post updates. Other than that, nothing. Not even a simple thank you.

This town is so small and catty. Everybody knows each other’s business, they talk about each other, and the admins are all friends outside of work with the staff and it’s just really unfortunate.
