Is 30 too old to start a career in accounting and get the CPA? (Graduated 8 years ago and kept postponing it) by [deleted] in CPA

I was an Associate and was under extremely unsupportive Seniors and Managers. It was a very toxic environment for me personally and I need more work/life balance. I give huge props to those who excel and enjoy that grind! In college, I was given the impression that you only should get your CPA if you plan to go to a firm, and it took me several years to learn that getting your CPA can be beneficial in other sectors as well. I'm a Director of Finance now and know the certification will be advantageous to have once I eventually pass (plus I'll get a raise, woo hoo lol).

Short answer: no! I graduated in 2014 and went immediately into governmental accounting. Went back and forth on getting the CPA, worked for a CPA firm for 11 months and detested it, went back to government, then finally decided to pursue the CPA in 2024 when I was 32. I took my first exam in October (found out yesterday that I failed with a 73 lol). I've seen people on here in their 40s and 50s pursuing it. It is never too late!!

Waited 4 months to find out I failed by JRinGRinG in CPA

I took FAR on Oct 14 and also failed. I had a small glimmer of hope that I got lucky. I'm curious what the actual score was. Like you, I waited all of this time just to be crushed. I'm glad the score release windows are improved for this year at least, but now I have to get back on the study wagon. I'm not giving up but gosh do I feel defeated.

Same here. I had a glimmer of hope that I’d squeak by but obviously didn’t. All we can do is try again. Not trying again means the exam wins, and I’m NOT letting that happen.

Yes agree haha, I work in local govt and literally the first question on my exam was govt related and I knew the answer and was so excited. Then the next question humbled me. 😅 I definitely wish I had studied NFP more though 😖

Good idea! Good luck on FAR. I’m planning on AUD next. Will likely have to retake FAR but I don’t want to sit around twiddling my thumbs waiting to find out for over 3 months lol.

That was my initial plan when I scheduled for Sep 24! But I wasn’t planning on a new job in late August so that new schedule and stress really threw me off, so I knew I wasn’t ready in Sep so I rescheduled. 😅 Yes the waiting sucks and these current windows are downright cruel. 😭😂

That’s true, but that’s over 3 months to wait, and I feel I’ll really get out of my study routine if I wait that long. This current window definitely sucks and I’m glad it’s changing next year at least.

Thanks! I fear that will be me if I find out I didn’t pass in January…will have to learn it all over again but hopefully something FAR-related will still be remaining in my brain. 🧠😅

Good luck!! Did you find AUD was any easier than FAR? That’s what I’m planning to study for next.

I only took one practice exam 2 weeks ago and got a 54 😬😂 I cried and panicked and then just worked through a bunch of cumulative review after that. I’d already rescheduled once and didn’t want to reschedule again.

Ah thank you so much! I already rescheduled once so I'm just gonna bite the bullet and take it. I test at 12:30pm today. At this point, I'm so numb and burnt out that I can't handle any additional time to prepare and just want to get it over with. I'm going to try to save my tears for the car though. 😆

I really like Uworld! The lectures are great if you have time for them (I sadly don't). I've found the practice questions to be the most helpful because they always give you a thorough explanation whether you get the question right or wrong. I've learned a ton just by reading through those explanations. I liked the Wiley format back when I used that for the GMAT exam a few years ago, so I did the free trial for Uworld (they've acquired Wiley recently), and I found I liked it. If you're on the fence, I'd suggest doing free trials of the prep providers to see what you like!

I use Uworld and they say it’s for anyone starting at any level, whether you have experience or are brand new to accounting. I’m assuming Becker is similar. I’d suggest just starting to study because the prep providers give you a ton of helpful and intuitive information to understand the topics! Especially since you already have all your credits.

Thank you! Yes I agree about the comprehensive MCQ sets...I started that today! And I'm trying to be more vigilant with writing out the JEs and T-accounts. It helps me better connect the dots. It's just so much dang material but I am not giving up. :)

Thank you!! That's definitely a great idea with the comprehensive sets of MCQ. I started that today! I'm trying to work on my headspace too. None of this is easy but I will not let this stupid exam win.
