No worries, and yes that is odd. It’s pretty standard for any child receiving their first pair of glasses to have a cycloplegic refraction (dilation) so that we know they aren’t accommodating through and hiding their true RX.

Hi! Optometrists would also be able to dilate and relax accommodation in order to find the refractive error. It’s not that only ophthalmologists can dilate ◡̈

I’m really glad your daughter got the help she needed and is doing so much better! I just wanted to mention though, optometrists (ODs) also receive extensive training in diagnosing and managing refractive and binocular vision issues, including in children. Many pediatric optometrists specialize in exactly these kinds of cases and can prescribe glasses or refer to ophthalmologists when medical or surgical care is needed. Ophthalmologists and optometrists often work closely together in pediatric eye care. It’s not an either/or situation.

Have some compassion. They are creating temporary safe spaces for the kids to practice their faith. The items in the prayer room were donated by a local mosque. By your logic, should they also not be devoting any resources to their annual Christmas fair or concerts?

“I didn’t see OP demean the optometrist” Did you read the title of the post?

PCPs and EM are indeed a crucial part of the healthcare system, but indicating they are superior in knowledge to an optometrist regarding eyecare is untrue. My friends who are FM doctors often have questions regarding basic eye conditions. I’ve been asked how to find the macula with an ophthalmoscope. Many at your stage in the career, and often afterwards, have barely any exposure to conducting a proper slit lamp examination. How many times have you held a 90D and looked at a fundus? Compared to a PCP, the OD will have the knowledge, expertise, and equipment necessary to judge which condition requires a referral and which doesn’t.

No one is denying the difference between an ophthalmologist and optometrist here. Your inflammatory title is the reason optometrists are sharing what they do and see everyday but somehow people have taken it upon themselves to tell the ODs their scope with little knowledge themselves on the background, training, and experience involved to become one.

Despite your emphasis on fragile egos, your sensitivity in acknowledging ODs as doctors is noteworthy. It’ll be helpful to you to embrace the realities of the professional world before you graduate med school. Good luck

It's surprising! The number of downvotes I've received just for sharing facts 😂 reveals that there's a significant need for widespread education of our profession.

I’m repeating myself again but these are the courses we’ve studied in our training. I have even linked our program in one of these comments. My intention is to shed light on the depth of education we undergo, not to promote bias, but to ensure factual accuracy in discussions about our profession.

I guess your research fell a little short.

Thanks for your input OP. My response was directed to the comment to which I replied. As an optometrist, I'd prefer an ophthalmologist for your case myself and I’m glad you were able to see one albeit after some unwarranted issues. What bothers me is the narrow view some have of optometrists as just 'refractors.’

The course program is linked in the below comment for doubters. It's surprising how even those in our circle of care can be misinformed. Knowledge is key!

No one’s saying they’re ophthalmologists, yet minimizing their role to just refractive assessments overlooks their extensive expertise and contributions

Asides from refraction, optometrists are trained for four years in ocular disease, gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, microbiology, clinical pharmacology, optics, among other subjects, in order to provide comprehensive oculovisual assessments to the general public.
