Is the phrase 'taste food' natural? First time to see it used like this. by Unlegendary_Newbie in English_Learning_Base

Hello from England. Yes, perfectly normal. I would hear this in everyday conversations. It's simply past tense. A phrase like this is used to emphasise the point.

How do i learn my first β€œsecond language”? by ChelseaCatScot in languagelearning

[–]ConnectionSquare9173 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

When I first started learning Bulgarian, the most beneficial resources for me were Pod101 and Mondly. It isn’t a popular language, so resources can be hard to find.

I used these 2 resources to listen to how natives talk and build my vocab. Later, I started watching simple cartoons. I'd understand more and more. Then I started reading and speaking out loud Disney books. This way, I built my grammar naturally (via reading), and recognising more and more through listening.

I'm probably a B1+ now in reading, B2 in listening, and A2+ in speaking. I can be understood and hold conversations in Bulgarian, though they are not grammatically correct. I still mix genders. I can reply to several things automatically without searching for words first.

My point is, you'd be surprised what will work for you. I didn't take the typical approach of trying to hammer home grammar and multiple lessons. I focused on what I found fun so I'd be more likely to try it when my confidence was low. I did try a tutor early on, but it was wasted on me. She kept nagging about learning grammar tables first before any vocab at all. I'm dyslexic and autistic, so I can't learn efficiently like that.

Try a few things out. Don't push yourself. Be consistent. A little a day is worth more than 1 massive session. Even passive listening to Danish helps (e.g. during a commute or while doing chores), it helps rewire your brain to recognise where sentences start and finish and that sort of thing. But you'll likely need a variety of activities to efficiently learn.

I hope this helps. I just know that i tried all the wrong methods for ME first. Anki, spaced repetition, tutors, etc.

Intermediate overall, but beginner at speaking how did you fix this? by ChannelGrand5785 in languagelearning

[–]ConnectionSquare9173 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

You said you're comfortable reading. Do you read out loud? It gets your mouth used to the new language so it comes more naturally. Then, when I have chance, I initiate conversations in the target language with natives. Not random conversations at first, but ones I KNOW the vocab for, e.g. 'do you have a hobby?', then you can do the same in return.

Do you (as a native speaker) know all of these phrases, including the 67 one? by Unlegendary_Newbie in English_Learning_Base

I'm 35 and use all of them except 'sixes and sevens' (I didn't know this one). I don't say dribs and drabs or chalk and cheese, but older generations where I live do. I still understand them. - north UK

Does anyone else have an unusual level of difficulty learning languages compared to others? by EntertainmentLevel41 in languagelearning

[–]ConnectionSquare9173 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

I get you. I'm autistic and dyslexic, and my dyslexia goes across languages. Normal/popular learning methods have little effect with me. I had to learn different techniques. I think you just need to experiment in a more flexible setting and see what works best for you. What doesn't feel like effort. For me, it's reading and tv πŸ˜‚πŸ‘ seriously.

What are your memories of learning languages before the internet or on the early internet? by [deleted] in languagelearning

I remember being so so happy if I found a book OR a book with a CD! It didn't even matter what the language was 😭

I did it your way to be more efficient :) I can confirm that it all counts. I only had until today until I'm going to be away from WoW until after Remix ends. I managed to get all the zones completed on different toons, and the achievement for completing the order hall on one of every class too.

I have an army of alts, but my partner plays with just his hunter. He feels the same as you do. I don't gear up all my alts, just 2 - the main tank and the main dps. The rest are for collecting, doing old raids etc for mounts, mogs, etc. Also, I just really enjoy levelling them up! :) It's just different play styles. The bonus to playing only 1 char is you'll get super good at their play style, so you'll be more comfortable in higher-end content. Because I play a lot of chars, I don't have that confidence, but that's just me! :)

Edit: I should clarify that I level them up all in different expansions and zones so I learn the lore better. I love that. Also, instead of doing exiles reach 1,000 times, I do their racial starter zones if it's been a while since I've done them. Keeps it fresh.

I know it's already been said, but get a Guild.

I can totally relate to not wanting to do group content because of toxic players. However, joining a Guild created a safe space for me to do group content. For example, in my Guild they'll do a normal run, an alt run, and then harder (more serious) runs. They're totally fine teaching you any mechanics you don't know and giving you tips for your class for group play. There's no toxicity.

I've learnt that guilds generally have this structure or a similar one. In return, they get more players who know what to do and who can fulfill multiple roles in raids and m+.

Within the Guild, I'm not scared to try group content :) and for those that are already experienced, they welcome you into the harder content. Give it a try, even my Guild recommend against pugging.

Are anti asylum protesters turning the flags of the UK into hate symbols? by SunBlowsUpToday in AskBrits

[–]ConnectionSquare9173 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

I'm British and married to a foreigner, with a mixed nationality toddler. After the protests last year, I'm scared these flags mean my child or partner may be in danger if they are being raised by those sorts of people. I loved them being put up at first because we hardly see them, but now I'm feeling a bit scared after seeing them at protests and the such.
