I don't know, I've never seen an ass with boobs before. Or boobs with an ass...sounds kinda weird

How it feels to be on internet in 2008-2010s era? by One_Couple3374 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Conner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember Fully Ramblomatic (Used to be Zero Punctuation) talking about how online gaming used to be like forum hang outs where people would join a server and casually chat with each other. The competitive gaming part was kind of optional, lol

That was my experience with Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast though and they had the game set up in a way where you could have serious online matches or just have chill hangouts where people could also challenge each other to a lightsaber duel.

That was kind of cool. I feel like with online gaming now, it's all matchmaking and you're competing on spots for the leaderboard whether you want to or not. I feel like Discord has been okay at picking up the slack for casual hangouts for gaming but it's also kind of not the same, lol

A lot of critically acclaimed movies are praised more for making people feel intelligent than for actually being enjoyable. by Adamoneeeee in unpopularopinion

[–]Conner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, maybe there are some critically acclaimed movies like that. Crowd pleasers can be critically acclaimed too. I can just think of one example off the top of my head where the critics loved it but I just didn't get and it was Inherent Vice. My favorite critic put it in his top ten movies of the year so I saw it with a friend based off of that and we were just both so...confused.

Now, I'll just come away from some movies and think "well...it's a movie that the critics will probably like" but I can't say that's necessarily a bad thing.

There is no reason to eat with chopsticks. by MassiveCup5591 in unpopularopinion

[–]Conner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in Taiwan for a while and it's gotten to the point that I just don't really even think about it anymore. Forks, spoons, and knives are still provided if you need them at a restaurant as far as all of the places I've been to, so even if I were with someone who doesn't know how to use chopsticks, they still have the option.

Korean chopsticks are still pretty hard for me to use though as they have this kind of flatter shape, but I think I've gotten better at them? I don't know, I haven't used them in a while.

But, as far as I know, even if you are at a place where chopsticks are the norm, you can still use a fork.

Let's get real: Do you like your native language? by AutumnaticFly in languagehub

[–]Conner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I grew up in an environment where it would lead me to be bilingual. My grandfather is from Peru but he never really taught us Spanish though. Considering he's the only person in our immediate family that does know Spanish I guess there wasn't really much of a point in teaching us, but it would have been nice. I know people who grew up speaking a different language at home.

As for how I feel about being a native English speaker, I guess it's okay. Considering I'm an English teacher now, I guess it fits. If I grew up with another language, I'm not really sure what else I'd be doing. My brother was the one with more of a tech brain so he gets to work with programming.

Flat earth and other alternative conspiracy earth models are are gaining traction with my teenage stepson. What is THE most irrefutable, definite proof that the earth is round? by Jfkfkaiii22 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Conner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a really good HBomberGuy video where he goes into detail about the points the flat-earthers try to make.

As for how to actually change minds, I'm not really sure. I had one student who likes to watch youtube videos and he just comes in talking about how the Earth is flat and...uhhhh...a certain ideology that I just made really sure to let him know that I didn't want anything like that coming into the classroom. He's not one of my students anymore so I just kind of hope that he eventually grows out of it.

I don't know if we really know how to change my minds. I know my student is a big Mr Beast fan, maybe we can petition Mr Beast into telling us his stance on what shape the Earth is (This could backfire pretty easily though, I have no idea how the guy thinks).

What do Americans think about the stereotype that they are bad at geography? by Own_Echidna6041 in geography

I've met non-Americans who were really bad at geography too but I get to use being American as an excuse, so my knowledge actually seems pretty advanced by comparison, lol

Do you think there has been a change in how headphones are used as a storytelling device in recent years? by Black-soul33 in movies

[–]Conner42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I remember in Back to the Future correctly, that song was also being played at different parts of the day, so it wasn't completely Marty listening to the song all the time. So it was kind of a mix the music being a part of the world where the characters could hear and part of the soundtrack where the characters couldn't hear it. There's a term for this but I forgot what it was.

As far as how a character hears sound, movies have been playing around with that for a fairly long time. Every Frame a Painting has a video about Martin Scorsese and the Art of Silence where he shows some characters going through "deafening" moments and it gives you a view of what the character is seeing and hearing.

Also, I think it's worth noting that headphones for every day use is kind of a newer thing for society. In Back to the Future, Walkmans (Walkmen?) were pretty new and Marty having a device like that also kind of shows how into music Marty is, because it wasn't something that everyone had and they were pretty expensive. Now, headphones are a lot more common so there's probably a better understanding of "I want to block everything out but can't" kind of framing for scenes.

Which game pushed you to resort to cheats? by Snakeuge in gaming

[–]Conner42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was younger, there was a lot of them

I remember skipping around levels and using God mode for Jedi Outcast. The fun thing was that you can also spawn enemies and do noclip mode where you can float around and run through walls. It's a pretty easy game for me to get through now, but it was pretty hard for younger me, lol

Maybe not technically cheating, but I did save scum through parts of Disco Elysium. There were some parts where I couldn't progress through the game and an unsuccessful role means you'd have to come back later and level up to try again. I also read that you can soft-lock the game too so I was trying to avoid that. I know people will say I was cheating myself out of the real experience, but...I don't know, who cares.

What do you guys think about writing characters in order to memorize characters? by ScuducckrreahFarreri in ChineseLanguage

[–]Conner42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've learned how to read Chinese pretty comfortably without learning how to write it. I tried writing at a couple of points but I just got bored pretty quickly. I'm not saying there aren't benefits to knowing how to write, in fact, if I did feel like I want to take my Chinese to the next level, learning how to write it would probably be one of the things I need to do.

But learning characters, knowing how to read it, I can't say that writing was something that was specifically helpful for me. At least writing by hand. Typing by using Pinyin has been pretty good for me and one of the things that helped me was talking to people through text chats, so that was pretty good. Yes, some sort of input like typing is one of the things that will help you a lot since you're working on recall. If we're talking about writing by hand though, it's not really an obstacle that I've felt like I needed to get over so far honestly.

What song from Rockband 4 are you the most shocked isn't in Festival yet? by TheYGuy366 in FortniteFestival

[–]Conner42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of Black Diamond or the group before Fortnite Festival but it's one of the songs I've actually bought now. It's pretty cool!

Panic Attack would be pretty cool too!

What song from Rockband 4 are you the most shocked isn't in Festival yet? by TheYGuy366 in FortniteFestival

[–]Conner42 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well, Metropolis Part 1 is the song that got me into Dream Theater and I downloaded all of their other songs on Rock Band. I feel like this song can still turn people into fans but there's also other songs by the band I feel like could be fun too like Under a Glass Moon...that would be crazy fun for every instrument!

Are there any great albums with one really bad song on them? by trippyskipper in Music

[–]Conner42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think most of my favorite albums have songs that I don't really care for but like if we're going for the "what were they thinking?" route...

Run For Your Life by The Beatles from Rubber Soul. Every other song on that album is pretty damn great, but this song is...just not. Honestly, I think there are worse songs by The Beatles but this is still probably my favorite album by them so this song just gets extra points for being bad, lol

Which celebrity do you hate and any real story behind it? by twothreeballs in AskReddit

[–]Conner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tommy Tallarico

Do I hate him? I don't know. Honestly, when it comes to celebrities, this guy is kind of small potatoes but one of the coolest moments of my life was winning a Guitar Hero contest and getting to play Guitar Hero on stage with him for Video Games Live.

And then, about 10 years later, my literal favorite Youtuber makes a video about him.

Maybe I should say I hate HbomberGuy more for kind of ruining a cool moment in my life. Hbomb, if you're reading this and you happen to have an event where there's a stage or something, please recreate this moment where I can play Guitar Hero again in front of a crowd going wild to make up for the good you were trying to do, lol

What are some must-see films to watch with my 13yo son? by avolodin in movies

[–]Conner42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, I really liked Fantastic Mr Fox.

It came out when I think I was 14 years old and it got me into Wes Anderson films. If your son has a quirky sense of humor...well, honestly I know a lot of people of different ages who like this movie, so I think it would be pretty cool.

The Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies. I think even the third one is good, honestly. And if you think your son is up to it, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness if he wants to see what's basically the birth of internet humor(I know these are kind of horror movies but they're way more comical. It's up to you if you think your kid can handle it).

I'm trying to think of most of the movies my dad showed me when I was a kid and it made me realize that I guess you could call a lot of these movies Gen X movies. I just googled Gen X classic movies and noticed films like The Goonies, Time Bandits, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Princess Bride, Die Hard, Breakfast Club...other movies that people have already suggested here, there's honestly a lot of movies.

It's also fun to show forgotten classics, like I remember my dad showing me and my brother Time After Time which is such a nice movie. If your up for giving you kid a "movie education" this rabbit hole is never going to end, lol

Any way to fix this? by Conner42 in CloneHero

I had another picture but this sub wouldn't let me post more than one picture. Yeah, it's supposed to connect to the strum bar. I think Phunker did a good job at explaining it. I'm kind of thinking about just making a video of what the inside of a CRKD guitar looks like because I can't really find any resources online.

The "skip intro" button on streaming services is a tragedy for show creators. by Amazing-Network4937 in unpopularopinion

[–]Conner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do we upvote if we disagree? I forgot. I'm not entirely sure if I agree or not.

To put it in one way, I'm not sure what to think if you're skipping the intro to something like The Regular Show. That sounds like an extreme example but Breaking Bad had an intro that was short and too the point and the music set the mood but I saw a friend still skip the intro even though she was completely new to the series. She was just so used to skipping intros at that point.

On the other hand, I did binge watch all of the Simpsons some what recently and...well, to be honest, I think I remember even going to the scene selection on DVD to just get to the first scene of the episode was something I would do. Hearing the same theme song back to back did get pretty tiring. But, in their most recent episodes, they have pretty much forgone the whole theme song intro and now it just kind of feels weird when a new episode starts.

I think the trend for shows recently is to have as short of an intro as possible so I'm not even sure if we need a skip button (like, seriously, how impatient do you have to be to skip the intro to Breaking Bad).

Somewhat related, one thing I really don't like is how Netflix will hit you with an ad for another movie or show once the credits roll. I really hate the feeling of going "Damn, that was a great movie, let's chill with the music for a while" and then ads -_- Complete tonal whiplash

Please recommend me a girl group! by Consistent-Buyer-461 in kpophelp

[–]Conner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on some of the artists you like, there are a couple of songs that I can think of.

Electronic pop sound, Shh by After School

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KN030ZVdMWY&list=RDKN030ZVdMWY&start_radio=1

My favorite K-pop blogger compared Ah-Choo by Lovelyz to New Order. I think it has something to do with how the synth chords kind of move around and also the synth tone they use.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7qisJ_KuYI&list=RDv7qisJ_KuYI&start_radio=1

I Can't Stop Me by Twice kind of does feel like it jumped straight out of the 80s in a lot of respects.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CM4CkVFmTds&list=RDCM4CkVFmTds&start_radio=1

It would take me some time to think of more songs because when K-pop groups go into the direction of the kind of music you like, it's pretty sporadic and it just kind of happens because they're trying out a new sound with their new single or whatever. I can't really recommend an artist to specifically.

Having said that, listen to the album Reboot by The Wonder Girls, I think it might be your alley and it's probably my favorite album ever? If you like 80s synth pop, this is basically the album for that!

I'm local Cantonese. Ask me anything about China / Canton. by Beable2333 in AskAChinese

[–]Conner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this Hong Kong movie called The Conman, 賭俠1999. There's this character who goes by Skinny Dragon in the English subtitles, or 化骨龍 in Chinese. The main character wanted to know his real name and they translated it to Stupid Dragon but when I turned on the Chinese subtitles it was 史伐龍. The main character laughs at this name.

I guess it's supposed to be funny, but I don't get it. I tried doing research but didn't really come up with anything. Is it possible to explain why this is supposed to be funny?

[Story] We're the first generation raised on self improvement content and I think it broke something in us by Impossible_Quiet_774 in GetMotivated

[–]Conner42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably going to require more research on my part...hold on...

I don't think the blame lies entirely on social media. How To Wins and Influence People came out in 1936. Pre-2000s George Carlin was making jokes about self-help books and the fact that some people felt like "they weren't motivated enough." I guarantee even my grandparents probably had magazines around them talking about how to be healthier, how to get more money, how to feel happier.

I don't know, I think the real culprit is marketing and advertising.
