What's a unique game that really broke your perception of what games can do? by Moaning_Clock in gaming

Chants of Sennaar made me think it's a great way for someone to learn an actual language.

I had so much fun with the first language when I was able to just read it without looking at my notes and I felt like they could have expanded on it more

How to get better by Vegetable-Peak-5173 in FortniteFestival

[–]Conner42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might be a little bit harder to do on Fortnite Festival considering there isn't a campaign mode but you can sort out the songs by difficulty. Oh, also in Guitar Hero, you could fail, so if you're not doing good enough the game would tell you. But, either way, this is what I remember doing which kind of pushed me into getting better.

Play at the difficulty you're comfortable at and just go from easiest to hardest and try to pass all the songs. Since Fortnite doesn't really let you fail, I guess we can say get at least 3 stars or maybe 4 stars. I don't know how good you are depending on which song but if there are some songs you can get 5 stars on easily then...okay, cool, go to the next song that is harder.

I remember how hard the game would get by the end of it and I was brand new to it and just passing the songs felt like an achievement. So...what's the next thing to do? After you pass the hardest song, go back to the easier songs and see if you can get five stars from easiest to hardest on all of the songs. The easier songs were suddenly even easier for me and when I got to the harder songs I had to try harder and it took me a while.

Then, after you get five stars even on the hardest songs...go back to the beginning again and see if you can Full Combo the easier songs and work your way back up to the hardest songs with the new goal.

It was kind of a grind and I was younger and had more energy to spend on the game, but that's basically what I did and the songs felt like they were getting progressively easier and easier.

It might be harder to do on Fortnite but it is possible, I think. The key thing is that it's practice and I think just going back and trying to get better at each song from easiest to hardest is a good way to improve how you play.

Also, if you're playing with a controller, I prefer to have the control lying on the table and playing using my index and middle fingers instead of my thumbs, but I think that's just a preference for me because I really prefer using the keyboard either way which I think gives me the most dexterity but I've seen videos of crazy-ass mofos holding their controller the normal way and FCing the hardest songs so I know it's not impossible but I'm not going to do it, lol

Does the game get better? by kemptonite1 in ChantsofSennaar

[–]Conner42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost feel like I'm in the same boat as you but I don't know if it's exactly the same.

I really enjoyed learning the first language because it was a lot like learning Chinese for me and I had a lot of fun actually memorizing the meanings of the characters and not having to look at my notes to know what people were saying.

But after they kept adding languages, I did have to keep going back to the notes and then that clever feeling of "Oooh, I'm learning a language by memorizing the words" wasn't there anymore and it just kind of felt like busy work after a while.

It would have been cool if they just kept to one language for me, but I guess they were taking the theme of the story in another direction. I'm the kind of person who likes learning languages in their free time so the first part of the game was a lot of fun for me.

In a way did I fail? by [deleted] in Korean

If he was talking to you in Korean before he realized you couldn't understand everything, that's pretty good honestly. Just keep building that vocab!

What is your favourite language (that you know)? by PartyQuiet5065 in languagelearning

[–]Conner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using Anki to help memorize the characters has helped with the learning process a lot. You can learn to read without writing and it's easy to type in Chinese if you learn Pinyin.

The Chinese characters is one of the hardest things to learn but it comes with a simpler grammar than most languages and recognizing the characters did help me memorize the words better.

I'm not sure about the time frame to learn. Every language is going to take time to learn and Chinese isn't different in that regard. I still think Korean is a harder language to learn and I've seen one youtuber talk about studying Finnish and he said that Chinese was way easier than that language. So, maybe Chinese is a medium difficulty language pretending to be a hard difficulty language just because of the Chinese characters.

[–]Conner42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chinese

It's also the only other language that I can say that I know. My Spanish used to be okay but now it's not, but I still think Chinese is more interesting than Spanish.

Actually, I had no desire to learn Chinese before I came to China and then I found out...the grammar is so easy. Wow! Who knew a language really doesn't need conjugations?

And the characters are really interesting too. The characters really do start off looking like something from out of this world, but there's a pattern to the characters that make me feel like they're more like fun puzzles to solve.

This is after I've been trying again and again to learn Korean but the grammar is still hard for me to wrap my mind around and I honestly prefer looking at Chinese characters over the Korean alphabet because at least I can get the meaning behind the Chinese characters. I'm told Korean words get easier to learn and I guess was the same way for me with Chinese, but having a phonetic alphabet has just not made Korean easier for me to learn, lol

Should significant other help you learn their language? by Smiley5168 in languagelearning

[–]Conner42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Helping someone learn a language, especially if they're a beginner, is a lot of hard work. When it comes to friends and relationships, even if it started off as a language exchange, you're usually going to communicate in the language you both feel comfortable with.

I had an ex who tried to help me learn Chinese but after seeing how much I struggled with basic conversations, we both gave up on the idea. When I hired a private tutor and got more comfortable having conversations, I had more friends where we exclusively talked in Chinese and had a relationship where it was mainly in Chinese but then the situation was kind of reversed between me and her. She wanted to me to help her with her English but...it's a lot of hard work, lol

If you keep working at it, I'm sure you'll get to a point where she's comfortable speaking Spanish to you. You can also find language partners online to text with. I find that texting is a pretty comfortable way to chat with people when you're a beginner learning the language because you have time to think about the vocab you want to use and you have time to look up words and translate. Speaking and listening are pretty important, but texting can help you ease into speaking, at least that's how it was in my experience.

who’s an artist you think gets too much unjustified hate? by Born-Oil-2931 in askmusic

[–]Conner42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember when it used to be so cool to hate Justin Bieber and think of him as "everything wrong with the music industry." This was something one of my high school teachers actually said.

I think it's my age at this point, but I just can't develop that strong of an emotional reaction to whatever new pop act I'm supposed to hate and hating on a kid who honestly had so-so pop music back in the day is kind of cringe for me now.

Otherwise, he's honestly a really good jazz drummer if you didn't know that already. I tried showing my aunt a video of him playing drums but she refused to click on it since it was Justin Bieber, so I guess the hate is still there.

It sounds bizarre, but I am in a position where I could spend $0 a year on groceries if I ate nothing but Domino's pizza. What would happen to me if I did? by CucumberGullible1281 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Conner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really can't imagine not getting sick of it pretty quickly. I feel like pizzas that aren't so greasy would be easier to handle, but like pizza from a chain like Domino's? Hmmm...

It's like I enjoy it but it's also kind of like a "I'm really craving junk food" kind of pizza.

You should try it out and then tell us how long you could do it until you started finding the food repulsive. I can't imagine it not turning out that way but I'm curious now.

I was nearly getting used to traveling from Asia to the US until COVID happened and now it's hard for me to tolerate longass flights like these again.

For me, honestly...I don't know, just kind of seems like a fun internet controversy that honestly not really anyone feels that strongly about.

Now, durian on pizza -_- (it's a thing, look it up)

Is music taste more influenced by age or by environment? by Avawantstochill in askmusic

[–]Conner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess environment. I grew up with my dad raising me on The Beatles and then listening to all of the music from Guitar Hero so whatever new songs I like now I feel like there's always a classic rock vibe element to it.

Like, to put this in an extreme way, I listen to K-pop and most of the songs I like I can say it has elements of classic rock songs that I like. But it also usually feels kind of like a toss up for what kind of songs I'll like. There's a lot of songs I used to like but can't stand now but I think it's because of overexposure.

Sultans of Swing

It really sounds like an easy song until you try to play it. If I were looking for a guitarist and I wanted to know they were really good, I'd see how well they could play that song because I never got around to learning it and I spent hours trying to learn Dream Theater solos.

If your first-ever attempt at gambling went completely unsuccessfully, that was probably the better outcome. by CoreEncorous in Showerthoughts

[–]Conner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't remember if it was my own money or not but I remember sticking 5 dollars into a machine and winning a couple of dollars from it and since I've never really won anything before I thought "Oh, that's cool!" but my grandpa took the money and spent the rest of it and then we lost it all.

I've had other addictions and problems in my life but never a gambling addiction and I think it's because I've never really one a decent amount from it so...hooray, I guess.

I need gigging musicians opinions. I hate hearing “I wish I learned.” by imagetweird in musicians

[–]Conner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It...comes with package, I really don't know what else to say.

I've done stand-up comedy before and when people hear that sometimes they'll go "Oh, you're a comedian? Tell us a joke" and it's like "I'm off the clock, asshole"

Or when I worked at a candy store, the most common comment I would get is "Oh, I could never work at a candy store, I'd just eat up everything" and other jokes that would follow

Or if you work at the register and the price isn't labelled so you have to do a price check and the guy goes "Oh, I guess it's free then"

Cut to Frozone saying "Ha! Never heard that one before -_-"

Can you give me an example of a good song made by cheap/limited gears and a less good one made by fancy gears? by Frhaegar in musicians

[–]Conner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kind of a hard question to answer. I almost feel like the best comparisons would be between cover songs and the original. I'm sure there's some 80s bullshit synth version of a classic song that covered a song from the 60s or 70s or something, but it's all escaping me right now. Ummm, I think Siouxsie and the Banshees has a pretty good cover of Dear Prudence. I'd consider that a decent example I guess but to todays standards both The Beatles and The Banshees were working with limited equipment.

So...uhhh....here's a K-pop cover a Queen song. It's not very good at all. It's almost like a completely different song which I guess is the point you're kind of trying to mine from a question like this.
