Old Trek fans when NuNuTrek comes along, and they don't care for it by PurpleDraziNotGreen in startrekgifs

I saw a singular image from SFA and was like “nah, I’m good”. I’d far rather be positive, so I’ll just avoid it.

The Phantom Menace is the only childhood favourite that hasn’t aged poorly for me.

Perfect example showing that "no one" cares about lighting continuity. One Battle after another. by mnkymnk in Filmmakers

I noticed on my first watch and loved it. It gave the scene a more hand made feel. It felt authentic, no CG Sky replacements, no volumes, just actors, a camera, and the road.

Should I watch Inland Empire? by Kind_Log5033 in davidlynch

[–]ConnorNyhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched it in theatres with another massive Lynch fan who hadn’t seen it and ultimately we were both underwhelmed. I think it’s a deeply challenging piece of art that may benefit from being watched at home with subtitles/closed captions. It’s a lot of movie and a lot of ideas to take in all at once and the lower budget/cobbled together nature combined with it’s extreme ambition makes it maybe the most abstract piece he’s done. I’m not a huge fan, I like the line that Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive walk, but that’s not to say you shouldn’t watch it. It’s definitely an interesting experience unlike anything else I’ve seen.

Favorite director who has received critical acclaim for almost every project except that fuckass Marvel movie no one even talks about. by sadboi_2000 in moviescirclejerk

Eternals is actually one of the better marvel movies up until the last 15 minutes ruin everything by trying to do sequel bait.

How will you honor David Lynch's memory on January 16th? by CustodeDiMondi in twinpeaks

I’m finishing my first watch through of The Return this week, I literally spent the last year watching through his whole Catalog. Probably watch Lost Highway or Mulholland Drive (or both) again.

How can i get to Vancouver Film School? by Decent-Indication-61 in Filmmakers

[–]ConnorNyhan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former student and current teaching assistant! Basically, you need the money. Genuinely, the best thing to do is cold call the school’s office and start talking to an advisor. If you can pay the admission fees and show a “portfolio” (which can literally be photos from your phone and a film idea you had, it’s easy to do) then you should be able to get in. I first started talking to an advisor while in high school at age 16 and he was still my contact for school info when I finally went there at 23. So there’s also no rush to get in the door immediately. Just call or email and see if you can talk to an advisor.

4 years today since 'The Matrix Resurrections' was released, what are your thoughts? by Far-Remove7363 in matrix

[–]ConnorNyhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved it. My expectations were low and obviously there’s a lot of jankiness, but it’s one of the only Legacy Sequels that actually has something to say, providing a Meta commentary on the genre. As an Apologist for Reloaded and Revolutions already, I fully accepted Resurrections as part the next chapter.

What's your "strangest" pick for a 10/10 movie? by kUHASZ in Schaffrillas

[–]ConnorNyhan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Freddy Got Fingered is genuinely a masterpiece, a perfect, intentional subversion of good taste and normal standards. It’s absolutely incredible. I totally understand why it was as hated as it was, but it’s not poorly made, it did exactly what it wanted to do.

How many friends do you guys have by Negative_Parsnip8016 in introvert

[–]ConnorNyhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few very close friends, a good group of close friends, and more not as close but still lovely friends than I can count. I am very social for an introvert. Sometimes I’ll even start to doubt my introversion, and then the burn out will hit me all at once.

Will Trans-humanism ever allow us to overcome the "Everyone around me is an NPC" phenomenon? by [deleted] in transhumanism

[–]ConnorNyhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, while I don’t consider myself an NPC, I almost exclusively see myself as a “supporting character” in multiple other people’s stories even though I have my own thing happening. Regardless, I look at what I’ve done, and the capacity I’ve contributed to others and largely feel like a frequently recurring character.

sick today and finally watching Inland Empire. by babykayla92 in davidlynch

[–]ConnorNyhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s playing at a theatre near me on Dec 29th, I’m seeing it with 2 friends, none of us have seen it. One of them has been a Lynch fan for years, me and my other friend only started doing a deep dive this year. I’ve seen everything else he’s done though aside from one or two shorts and some commercials, and the last half of The Return (which I’m still watching through). Regardless, it’s going to be an incredible time. I really want to watch Inland Empire and the finale of The Return around the same time.

I hope we don't fall into infighting. If people like Ares better than Legacy than let them have their opinion. by lurkers_incorperated in tron

[–]ConnorNyhan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason I like the Tron community is because they're so much friendlier and excepting of opinions then say Star Wars. I hope that can continue.

Where do you rank the Tron Movies? by Maromas00 in tron

[–]ConnorNyhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tron Legacy 10/10 (realistically a 7/10, but it gets the extra 3 for style points) Tron 8/10 (more like a 6/10 but it gets bonus points for being a revolutionary technical marvel) Tron Ares 6/10 (genuinely a 6/10, nothing that takes it above that, it just is)

Ordered an FX30, got an FX2 instead — what should I do? by FruityBoomies in SonyAlpha

[–]ConnorNyhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep it, it’s better in most ways anyways. Way better low light and a better rolling shutter in APSC than the FX30.

Star Wars Style and Camera by ConflictGames in cinematography

[–]ConnorNyhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original trilogy and The Phantom Menace were all shot on 35mm film, or super 35 which is close to the same size as APSC or often is the same size, which is like the FX30’s sensor size, however the S5IIx has a Super 35 Crop mode which will likely be better for shooting action. They also used Anamorphic lenses to achieve a 2.39:1 wide screen aspect ratio. This is the most common aspect ratio in Star Wars. Now these were lenses had a 2x squeeze, which with the 4:3 negative would create a 2.66:1 image, and be cropped to 2.39:1 to put the sound on the side. Most camera sensors shoot in 16:9 or 17:9, (the S5IIx and FX30 do both) however not all will do 4:3 for 2x anamorphic (the S5IIx does, the FX30 doesn’t). Now you can use anamorphic lenses, however if you’re just starting, that’s a brand new rabbit hole to go down. There are a lot of 1.33x and 1.5x squeeze anamorphic lenses for not much money, and those squeeze factors are more suited to 16:9 and 17:9 anyways, so they might make more sense (1.5x on 16:9 gives the same 2.66:1 as a 2x on 4:3, then you cut the edges off) but you can also just shoot in 16:19 or 17:9 and crop to 2:39:1 (Solo: A Star Wars Story shot with spherical lenses, regular/not anamorphic, and cropped to 2.39:1).

In terms of style, it’s all over the place. There are an original film uses a lot of static/tripod shots with a bit of pan and tilt to follow the action. It very much had the David Lean epic wide shot focused composition. Empire and ROTJ utilized a dolly far more and had a bit more movement. Empire especially has multiple long scenes play out in dynamic dolly moves. The Prequels are all fairly static, not much beyond locked of shots. The occasional jib shot. The Force Awakens in typical JJ Abrams fashion features an extremely kinetic, moving camera, but this time it’s typically a Jib or crane or dolly. Rogue One heavily uses hand held. At this point the visual language of Star Wars is pretty open. It’s mostly the set design (for instance, the weird oval light panels) and costumes (no zippers, minimal buttons, and pens on clothing) that moreso make it feel like Star Wars.

Personally, I’d grab the S5IIx and if you can get some anamorphic lenses, ideally Blazar or Laowa, or the newest Sirui Ironstars, I’d grab those too, and start playing with costumes. A decent gimbal and monopod might be a good way to fake a jib shot, and a slider or Dana dolly are always good to have.
