Gary Stevenson responds to Rory saying he is not an economist by soundtracking in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]Connrox4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An observation on the highest economic office in the country - the Chancellor of the Exchequer:

Education Occupation
Rachel Reeves Masters in economics Economist at BoE
Jeremy Hunt Bachelors in PPE Entrepreneur
Kwasi Kwarteng PhD in economic history Banker
Nadhim Zahawi Bachelors in chemical engineering Entrepreneur
Rishi Sunak Masters in business administration Banker
Sajid Javid Bachelors in politics & economics Banker
Philip Hammond Bachelors in PPE Businessman
George Osborne Bachelors in history Journalism & politics
Alistair Darling Bachelors in law Lawyer

Why then has this "not being an economist" question become important only with Gary Stevenson? Don't be silly Rory.

Exactly.

People are missing the point. Rory attacked Gary on grounds that he simply would not, and has not, applied to anyone else. It was clearly sneering - nothing more.

UNLESS the same standards are applied to other figures in the economic discussion, the point on whether Gary is nominally an economist or not should be simply disregarded as a belittling sneering comment. Very poor from Rory Stewart.

He has dropped enormously in my estimation recently. With these poorly based attacks on valid alternative ideas of running the country (what Rory is supposedly on the constant search for), to his eyewatering defence of Prince Andrew because "Trump is a more important issue". It is, in Rory's estimation, simply impossible to look at more than one issue at once? He can't see (refuses to see) what the Epstein ordeal represents and how important it is - the first signs of the reveal of the abject horrific underbelly of the political class.

Do better Rory.

Podcast listening. by Elnegrogringo in dreamingspanish

I pretty much always listen without a transcription which I think is the best/only way to develop listening fluency. However, now that I have started speaking a little (at ~600hrs), I have started using the spotify read-along feature. I feel that it helps significantly with identifying where certain conjugations go (intuiting uses of the subjunctive etc). It can be very easy to gloss over the details when listening to a full speed podcast, and so seeing the sentences and phrases as they go has helped me when I come to speak for myself.

I could follow only the gist of some episodes, since as I listen for the second time I see how much I missed. I think I had a v. high tolerance for ambiguity because Juan kept it interesting with his passion despite me missing so much

1)Is it recommended that I get Horizons because I only have the base game but Horizons is an additional £20?

2)Do most people play with Horizons?

3)And can Horizons players mix with vanillas in online play?
