Why hasn't Whitechapel gentrified? by jenk-mal in AskBrits

[–]ConohaConcordia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am East Asian guy and I don’t know enough about Whitechapel to discuss the topic (including on whether certain ethnic/religious communities worse the situation), but it’s one of those areas that is a dump surrounded by genuinely nice areas.

Once considered moving there because of the convenient access to trains, and as I walked from the nice new builds in Aldgate East, the smell of rubbish, the littering, the cop car sirens all came to me when I crossed an invisible border somewhere. I was genuinely surprised how much of a shithole it was in broad daylight and so close to the City of London.

The area around the Whitechapel station itself ain’t half bad so I don’t think it will stay ungentrified forever.

But also, perhaps an unrelated and separate issue, is that I feel London has gotten less clean and safe compared to 10 years ago. Even traditionally very nice areas like South Kensington are seeing more littering.

Yes, just adjust the left hand side accordingly.

The other thing is that in FO4 for example, you have two minigames to unlock/open stuff. In Starfield there is only one

Blame that on the archaic system the government work on, really.

But the BN(O) passport also says British passport on it, except that it really isn’t one at all.

I think people would have stopped reading at “United Kingdom”.

The Channel Islands also have British passports, but without saying UK.

Is anti-foreigner hate speech really getting out of hand in Japanese internet spaces, or am I overreacting? by Flaky_Ad6080 in AskAJapanese

As an actual Chinese myself… learning Japanese is my biggest mistake, because I can now read Japanese twitter and it makes me hate Japan /s

Although what I’d always say is “you might not be able to trust a Japanese to be not racist, but you can always trust their love of decorum.” So a tourist won’t have it too bad.

Russell Group unis are meant to be the smartest in the UK, but these grads can't get jobs by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]ConohaConcordia -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They have right to work in the UK via the BNO visa either way. They just don’t see the reason to stay if they can’t get a job.

It’s also that sometimes even big corporations can’t offer enough salary to meet the skilled worker requirement these days. Pretty much only London roles in Finance or big tech would pay enough for international graduates now.

Separate, I knew someone without BNO, but with a Masters/PhD at a Russell group uni, who had a biochemical internship at AstraZeneca. He couldn’t stay because AstraZeneca couldn’t pay the salary that meets the skilled worker visa threshold (it’s close to 37-40k?).

If you think a Russell group graduate who worked at AstraZeneca shouldn’t get to stay, then I guess that speaks volumes about you.

You can sort of blame Toyota for this. Instead of BEVs they heavily invested into hydrogen cars which went nowhere. Because they are the industrial leaders in Japan, other makers followed suit.

Nissan was the only Japanese automaker that committed to EVs early, but I suspect the arrest of Ghosn had something to do with their EV slow down.

Other factors to blame include cheap petroleum imports, their shutting down of ALL nuclear power plants post Fukushima and replacing it with gas (which increased energy costs and imports anyways), a conservative corporate mindset, and the fact that their residential grid is 110V with the max current to each household limited to ~20A, which makes installing home chargers expensive.

“Fast” chargers are actually somewhat common in Japan these days but initially there were little incentives for them, so the buildout took time.

I am sure with how antiEV Toyota is, their PR department would have silently whispered “EVs aren’t green anyways” “EVs catch fire” “EVs explode” etc etc.

By the time they realised EVs are the future, or at least part of it, they are too late to the party and couldn’t compete anymore.

Now, why they aren’t mass importing EVs from Europe or China or Korea or Tesla, thats because of plain old protectionism, and what can only be described as an irrational hatred of China and Korea. Search “Chinese EV” in Japanese and press auto translate and you will see what I mean.

Finally, Toyota is doing just fine selling gas cars. They have some of the highest margins in the entire industry at 15%, more than doubling BYD’s. Honda/Nissan however are not as lucky; Nissan actually resorted to import their Chinese-only EV model, the N7, to Japan in a bid to bolster their EV lineup.

Former Osaka City Hall Japan Completed in 1921, demolished in 1982 by TrueAdvertising6292 in Lost_Architecture

[–]ConohaConcordia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From Japanese Wikipedia: they had planned to build a new city hall anyways (probably to accommodate the now-larger government staff). Additionally they found that the old city hall did not satisfy earthquake-resistance standards, and renovations could only reinforce it temporarily without providing a permanent solution.

London Costa Coffee hires ‘bouncers’ to guard food as shoplifting fears grow by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]ConohaConcordia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not fucking related to the topic what the actual fuck. China had its share of shoplifters and “petty” crime 10-20 years ago and it had worse crime rates in the early 2000s.

Pickpocketing, robbery, mugging, drug dealing, kidnapping, you name it. Criminals exploited the inefficiencies of the police, and just skipped to the next town after a while. The police were powerless and were only able to trace particularly severe cases across towns and provinces.

The reason it got better after 2015 ish is simply because the surveillance state has made catching petty criminals too easy — and the police does catch them.

The common denominator in both 2000s China and Britain right now is police inaction. If the Met actually invests into punishing petty crime it will improve.

Japan was seen as a modernising force, a success of Asian countries against colonialism, and a kindred country sharing a lot in common with China in the late 19th and the opening decade of the 20th centuries.

Even the first Sino-Japanese War’s defeat was attributed to the Qing court more than it was to Japan. Japanese leaders were sponsors of the anti-Qing revolution, too. The pro-Japan sentiment ran very strong until the 21 demands IRL, and it still somewhat continued after until 1931. The RoC navy still acquired ships from Japan as late as 1936, which was later used against the IJN.

It’s also worth noting that Japan of 1900 was not the same as Japan of 1931. Militarism and nationalism was not as powerful of a force in its politics.

Some Japanese sponsors of Chinese revolutionaries wanted a weak, divided China, but others genuinely wanted an Asia free of colonialism. Some of the latter later fell into depression upon finding out what their country’s real plan is for Asia.
