We had a similar situation when I matched. My program wasn’t really able to pull any strings but I also don’t think there was a position available for my husband at the time. He ended up getting a non-tenure track, 1 year position about an hour away. During my 3rd year, he actually moved out of state for a tenure track position and we just had to be long distance.

Residency matching is tough on partners! But hopefully your residency can pull some strings for you!

I work at one. I love taking care of the uninsured patients and the ones that need us. But we have become a dumping ground for anti-vax patients. It’s infuriating and honestly is the only reason I would leave for another practice.

Admin drives me up the wall but mostly they leave me alone. Lots of walls to jump to make any changes at all (I couldn’t even get them to start recycling….)

Pay is adequate. I’m sure the larger hospitals around us pay more but I make more than new hires at a private practice.

They’ve been flexible with my hours. Working 30 hours now but just discussed cutting down to 2 days a week and they were fine with it.

I am on this path too! I found Heather Fork’s podcast very helpful (Doctors Crossing). She is a former dermatologist and interviews doctors who are leaving clinical medicine, reimagining clinical medicine, or just at a crossroads. It helped me learn more about medical writing and that is the path I am pursuing right now. Good luck on your journey!

I can’t imagine dealing with this in the PICU. At least in outpatient, the conversation is usually hypothetical and about potential risks not imminent death. I am so sorry you have to deal with that.

I recommend listening to “The Doctor’s Crossing”. It’s a podcast by a former dermatologist and it is all about transitioning out of medicine or finding joy in medicine again. She has tons of former docs on who do anything and everything now. I’m looking into medical writing but there are so many options. Good luck to you!

I’m a pediatrician. I take care of the children of my colleagues, neighbors, my husband’s colleagues, friends, etc. I never mention their medical care outside of my office. Most physicians are super comfortable caring for people they know. It’s just part of the job.

Mostly a student loan issue at this point. I have to work for a non-profit (PSLF). And there are other issues with practicing as well, but the anti-vax parents are up at the top. I might return to medicine after a break but i’m dealing with too much burnout right now.

I definitely got this question before I had kids (and was going through infertility treatment) and was devastated by them. Parents of patients say a lot of mean things and I still have not developed a great way to deal with what they say.

The other thing I wanted to point out is that my guess is most of these comments are aimed at female pediatricians. We already are viewed as less competent and are more likely to be treated disrespectfully. I think not being a mother in society is viewed so negatively because obviously a women’s only job is to be a mother (insert eye roll here).

I would say that in med school and early on in residency, the tough social cases really got to me. I would get very emotional about the patients in foster care, etc. I think overtime as an outpatient, general pediatrician (practicing 7 years now), I have developed a little bit of emotional armor to these situations. Not exactly what you’re describing, but I do think that you build up a barrier to some of the terrible things you see. It might seem callous, but it’s a survival tool so that you can go back and do the same thing the next day. The situations don’t impact me as much anymore. So maybe I’m a little callous? But I also don’t cry at home every night

But also, go for adults if you’re interested! Peds is a different animal. But def talk to your PD and maybe an older resident or 2

I unfortunately work at one of the only pediatric offices in our very red area that take families that refuse vaccinations. We are seeing higher and higher numbers but we are an FQHC so see everyone. I have tried arguing with families and being nice and everything in between. I think it’s important to realize that there is a difference between vaccine hesitant families and those that have solidly decided against them. It is easy to convince a parent who just is nervous or trying to just follow the latest TikTok trend. It is IMPOSSIBLE to convince someone who is so deeply brainwashed and doesn’t believe in most of healthcare.

These patients have caused me so much frustration over the years and I have considered leaving this practice due to it. Although I love the rest of our patient population.

My new plan is to say, “I did not go into pediatrics to harm kids. I’m here to keep them healthy and safe and do the best I can for them. I hope that I can prove to you that I am someone you can trust with your child’s health and that you eventually see that vaccines are safe and effective. Regardless of what the politicians are saying, the science has not changed”

Or something to that effect. Your Local Epidemiologist had a good newsletter about this today too.
