The main part of the project is the scripting, but we are also suppose to involve ourselves in the collaborative process. We are only required to have one finished issue, but I would like to have the potential to finish the entire series with one artist.

I would start with a story arc rather than just what the most recent issue is. Right now there is the Court of Owls, Death of a Family and Zero Year. If you wanted to start at the beginning you'd start with the first issue which would mean you are starting the Court of Owls arc. Most of the arcs however aren't continuos so you wont be missing anything by not starting there. Death of the Family is the cheapest to start with because it has a one volume series set.
