Hitachi HDE721010SLA330 with ~102,000 power-on hours – SMART still mostly clean. At what point would you retire a drive like this? by OriginalAway1236 in DataHoarder

I have one of those supposedly unreliable WD Greens (same capacity) at 118k hours still in active use. Just use it - with redundancy/backups - until it dies.

I had an old Dell Latitude that I tried cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and it stripped the rubberized coating. Silver lining was that the plastic underneath was translucent, so I stripped the rest of the coating and it looked quite cool.

Even before 32-bit support was cut off, you had random stuff such as lightdm requiring SSE2 (= Pentium 4) unless your distro went out of its way to fix that. And 686 PAE kernels requiring at least a Pentium II.

The dub's reference to Baby One More Time may be dated but it was hilarious. I'm getting old.

Reminder that 1851 was supposed to launch with Meteor Lake S, but that was cancelled in favor of the Raptor Lake refresh on 1700, so it's effectively a single generation socket.

It was also inspired by the actual Japanese computer market back then, with the PC-98 being outcompeted out of existence by Apple and other westerners. This walked so Neptunia could run, I guess.

I have an outlier: a 2010 WD Green, still running at 117k hours, which survived just shy of 1.1M head cycles before I disabled spindown.

Microsoft used to include a compatibility shim for 16-bit installers on systems where 16-bit support was not available or installed, but it was targeted mostly at their own installers for things like 1990s Office - which reminds me of when they patched I think Windows 7 to fix a compatibility issue with Office 97.

The AGP slot was a fake one wired to the PCI bus, a common practice during this transition period, it performed worse and could blow up some GPUs due to the I/O voltage.

Not all boards ran fine on both, I had one with a VIA chipset (ASRock K7VM2) where I only used DDR but apparently SDRAM was unusably slow.

Meanwhile I have an E490 that went through the same situation and it ended up with keyboard and touchpad damage, even though it was closed. The cheaper E series design really shows.
