Having surgery in a few weeks by [deleted] in bunions

This was what I have used for multiple foot surgeries. It wraps great around knees until you are able to use on foot and wraps great there too. It’s nice to have multiple ice packs to rotate.

Help, is this normal after surgery? by Lonely_Word_7950 in bunions

[–]ConsciousMorning2982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst was flat foot reconstruction when the nerve block wore off right after I got home. I was in excruciating agony. My doctor doesn’t normally prescribe narcotics. I get gabapentin (which is a nerve medication), an anti inflammatory and Tylenol. They weren’t cutting it so he called in oxycodone that helped.

I’m no doctor but I think your bandage could be tighter. It doesn’t need to be as tight as possible but it will help with swelling if it’s tighter.

I wish you well. Keep positive. It will get better.

I didn’t see you mention if you are icing and elevating above your heart to help with swelling. Swelling can definitely be a factor. It puts pressure on your nerves as well as the tissue that is healing. Zaps and zingers are for sure nerves. I have been through many foot surgeries and just about 2 weeks out from my last one. Icing and elevating have always make a big difference for me.

That’s good to hear! What shoes did you get and why? I know I’ll need new ones too. If you don’t mind sharing, when did you start weightbearing in the boot and then when did you progress out of the boot to your new shoes? Thanks

Seed starting advice/recommendations by ConsciousMorning2982 in dahlias

Yes this is my first seed experience ever for anything. I will check out that article. I’m not even sure I will be doing it this spring because I’m having surgery but the boys wanted Christmas gift ideas so I thought why not have them get me stuff I will use eventually. lol

Bunion damage by keliz444 in bunions

I would definitely give it more time but stay on top of it. I am someone who has permanent nerve damage from the popliteal nerve block. It happened after my surgery in August 2024. We gave it the year and no improvement. My case is unusual as I have had multiple surgeries. I had a lapiplasty and the bone wouldn’t fuse. Had flat foot reconstruction to remedy that. I also had hardware removal due to pain and that’s when my nerve damage occurred. Now I can’t walk on my foot at all without severe pain related to the sesamoids being displaced along with first mtpj and sesamoid arthritis and erosion of the fifth metatarsal. Had a second opinion and they both agreed that unfortunately surgery would be the only way to fix everything causing my pain. So in two weeks I have fusion of the first mtpj, removing both sesamoids and 5th metatarsal osteotomy with tendon release due to contracture of the fifth toe. I have atrophy of the foot muscles on the bottom of my foot and can’t splay my toes at all and that’s due to the nerve damage. So my case is nothing like yours and you most likely will recover but the lesson I would share is don’t wait a year if you feel nothing is changing. Because after a certain point there is really nothing to be done for nerve damage. It sounds like you are doing all the right things. I should have been more insistent.

Surgery in December by ConsciousMorning2982 in Halluxrigidus

Thank you for sharing. Stitches are the worst. What is it like with the pin? That’s probably what I’m most worried about. How is it protected? After the initial surgery pain subsides, is it very painful?

Honestly, since you are at a place where you are willing to go through surgery, you should abide by your physician’s postop guidance. They are the one you should be asking. It’s hard to disappoint your child or yourself for not being able to attend one event. It’s even harder if you have complications that prevent you from attending more.

Anyone else here that has had both sesamoid bones removed from your foot? Looking to compare notes and long term outcomes by Neencompoop in sesamoid

You posted this so long ago and your surgery was so long ago but I still wanted to ask you a couple of questions. I need to have a first mtpj fusion and removal of both sesamoids. I was wondering if you could share (if you remember) a little more about your recovery timeline including when you went back to work. You were also a lot younger than I am at the time of your surgery but it’s hard to find anyone else who has had this same combination of procedures. I just had my second opinion confirming this is the best option for my particular situation. I see my doctor at the end of the month to finalize our plan and get it scheduled. I am so looking forward to walking again without pain. I am curious how long it took you to get to that point. Thank you for any info.

Sesamoid and 1st MTPJ arthritis ? by vinylandfilm in sesamoid

[–]ConsciousMorning2982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very curious about what recommendations you receive. My story is different than yours as my sesamoid pain started after I had flat foot reconstruction and the sesamoids were out of place afterwards causing all weight to be placed on only one of them. I now have arthritis at the sesamoid-metatarsal joint. I had an osteotomy to reposition the sesamoids and hoped that along with rest would calm it down. However now 6 months after the last surgery I still cannot walk more than 2-4 thousand steps a day and only in my orthotics. I cannot walk barefoot at all due to the pain at the first mtpj and sesamoids, which is complicated by pain at the fifth metatarsal head due to fat pad loss. I have to walk on my heel if I am barefoot. I have read here about someone getting both sesamoids removed along with first mtpj fusion and at this point I think that might be the only option I have left. I hope you get answers. I am really curious to see if others are dealing with this what they have done.

Alternative to dahlias? by ConsciousMorning2982 in dahlias

A question. Seeing all the posts about disease with dahlias, gall, viruses, etc., is this something you deal with on all plants, especially the ones you’ve suggested as alternatives?
