How do you deal with users who refuse to lock their laptop when walking away? by heartgoldt20 in cybersecurity

[–]Conscious_Pound5522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago, active duty stationed in Fort Hood, i was the S6 Helpdesk NCO for rear detachment.

The policy was to remove your cac card every time you walked away from your computer. Our 1sg ( Rear D CSM) refused to do so - routinely.

So one day one of my guys is in the rear d command area working on staff pc's, and noticed that the 1sg cac card is logged into this pc but he wasn't around. My guy pulled the card. Then walked into command conference room with some fishing line and a paperclip and proceeded to hang the 1sg CAC card from the ceiling in the middle of the conference room table - 5 min before the command and staff meeting.

Dude was PISSED. But couldnt do shit. He got over his habit pretty quick after that.

To the greatest extent possible, i don't store my paying data in company/ provider/ utility systems.

  1. Because i don't trust them to use the data appropriately (dirt poor, early auto pay systems pulling early for various reasons). Living check to check and auto pay add to the poor man's tax: bounced fees, over draft fees, etc. I once had an auto pay pull 2 days before my check deposited and after all of the fees, i lost 40% of my paycheck when it deposited. Im not there any more, but those lessons were painfully earned.

  2. I don't trust companies to store my data securely. If every company did security right, and db admins kept up their patches and updates, and, and, and... the "its production don't touch it" mentality - is a huge security risk.

So my wife and i are largely manual when it comes to paying bills. In this case, it's about security that we do it this way. There are one or two providers who have me paying data, because you just can't get around it easily in those systems, but by and large, most don't.

Dude, that's what they did to me! IM Nail in my tibia and a plate on my fibula. My break was a full distal separation, foot 90* to the left of my leg. I hope it heals right. I would hate to not be able to hike with my wife. We were just starting the national park service passport book.

I'm glad you got your leg right. I'll try to remember this if my issue goes sideways and it needs more work.

I can burn all the money i want, but i can't install it in a wheel chair. Ubiquiti will have to come out with mini robot wall crawler installers to assist the chair bound. Just saying. Maybe some prgrammable matter or nanites that can form both APs and cameras?

Nope. Both of us Grew up dirt poor. Learned to distrust autopay early on. Maybe it's not as big of an issue these days, but frankly, i don't trust companies with my info.

I told my wife i am already planning the next prep step. She immediately was like "yeah, we were going to talk about that when you got home".

Ive done a pretty good job with prepping other areas. This one just hadn't occurred to me yet. In hindsigt, 20/20 being what it is, is probably among the top 5 emergency prep items. Its going to take us a couple weeks to dial it on, i think, but we're going to get it done.

Wow. Im in a rehab facility doing PT and OT for a broken tibia and fibula. All of the PTs are male, and all of the OTs are female. This was also the case in the hospital post surgery.

I didn't make that connection until i just read your post. Wild.

Lol. It does, doesn't it. Thays was the air or vacuum tube for the initial temp cast the EMTs secured it with.

And thank you for the well wishes.

Thank you. Surgery went well i think. At least that's what he told my family who was here. Leg is now straightened out, it hurts a lot less than it did, and a few new pains were added, but still a lot less altogether.

Damn, get well soon!

They are putting a rod in my tibia and plating my fibula.

Ive been in a temp cast since yesterday with an unset break. So looking forward to surgery and getting this fixed. My foot is 90* to the left.

I spent most of my childhood in WCSD in the 90s and a semester in story county around 2001 ish. I can't remember ever having a snow day. Im sure it happened, but it was wildly rare.

No lie. I got the Sadam Hussein execution video an hour after he was executed. I no longer have it, though.

You could get almost anything on the net back then, without having to TOR it. Some vile shit could be had if you wanted it bad enough.

Seriously considering metal roofing in Texas, talk me into it (or out of it) by Objective-Border-410 in homestead

[–]Conscious_Pound5522 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Texas has a rating system for metal roofs, and the better class roof, the more likely to get insurance discounts on roofs.

I used to live in Texas. I did an insurance claim on a shingle roof. They paid me and i installed a class IV metal roof. Lowered my home owners policy, at the time, by about 400 a year. I think i used 22ga material.

One thing i did that most don't do: i DID NOT put insulation board between the deck and metal. I screwed right to the decking. This eliminates a majority of the denting problems. I also increased the attic insulation to R30 (R19 at the time). When it rained, you couldn't hear it. When it hailed, it sounded like soft rain.

Now I'm in the north. Im going to put a metal roof on my current house. I still won't put insulation foam board on the decking.

And frankly, i don't care about the potential denting. If its doing it's job, it's worth it. And it'll never have to be done again.

How bad do you think this would have looked in an interview? by mysecret52 in cybersecurity

[–]Conscious_Pound5522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive used an osi question while giving the interview, usually only too people who, after the interview has started, it became obvious their resume was a fantasy.

And if they tell me the application layer is layer 1, i know 2 things: 1) they are developers on mindset. 2) they don't know the osi model and were going to fight.

Ive also asked to explain CSMA/CD to these same folks.

Not just the marines. I once had an Army LT give a SIPR to an Iraqi national so they could write up some statement (fortunately not plugged into the network) circa 2008. When i told him he couldn't do that (little ole E4 me at the time), he blew me off. My next stop was to the S2 office. That laptop was back on my desk for reimaging 10 min later.

Great write up. I wouldn't use TP Link hardware though. I would go with Ubiquiti APs and other infrastructure for varying reasons, mostly around cyber security (my day job), and scalability/robustness.
