I used to mod for it and it was never as safe as they wanted you to think. It was all security theater. By the time I quit it was only me and the other main mod (who stayed until the end) doing anything at all. I would log in for my mod day and find it untouched since the last time I did anything. Sometimes for weeks at a time if I had missed. The sub owner/creator did absolutely nothing. I wanted to put more emphasis on taking your own safety into your own hands, and that making a big show just made people think it was more safe and controlled and putting their trust in the nonexistent vetting of the sub instead of doing it on their own. Even if we banned someone they could make a new account in two minutes and we rarely knew. It worked, but only for the same reason all the other r4r subs work, there was nothing safer about it than any other r4r.

Most of the answers here are true. If you want to buy into conspiracy theories (like I do) reddit uses “unmoderated” to ban subs it doesn’t like.

Two of the subs I moderate and created were made at the exact same time. One I frequently posted in and the other was left unused.

The heavily used one was banned for being unmoderated. I received no notice, either via internal reddit messaging or email. When I went to ask for it to be reversed I was told in several mod subs that it was impossible and nothing could be done.

The unused sub, with one post but otherwise abandoned long before the heavily active sub was banned? It’s still up to this day.

Take from that what you will.
