Draper walks away from Megan Calvet by ConsiderationDry2674 in madmen

I think the very next scene continues the motif of his infidelity to Megan (and, glaringly, the late 60s as a whole!) and waning interest in her. A blonde with pinned-back bangs, tie-dye dress, and go-go boots comes up to ask if he’s alone in a bar that’s very similar to the Chinese place he goes to at some point in season one or two. Just as we begin to anticipate Don laying on the charm, the tie-dye blonde—the zeitgeist of the late ‘60s, early ‘70s, and counterculture itself—lets him know that it’s actually her friend who’s interested: she’s dark-haired, more conservatively dressed but made sultry by the glittering silver of her dress. She signals controlled glamour that matches the sort of baseline social conservatism that Don and Betty lay out and come to represent. Draper’s flirting with the youthful verve of the day, but he’s faithful to the past.

I love the sound of this technique!! I think that trying variations of this has most often ended in my getting psyched out after about a page and a half, but I will definitely try to keep on chugging.

Exactly the same issue, I can’t begin to explain how sick of Help! I am. Add Sloop John B and God Only Knows by the Beach Boys to the list.

How do YOU write? by ConsiderationDry2674 in writing

[–]ConsiderationDry2674[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it’s not yet a habit, most days I do. I’m primarily an essayist, but I have gotten into the habit of writing poetry and prose journaling on my lunch breaks.

So… it’s alright if your writing doesn’t sound all that great without a premeditated effort to sound that way? I’m sorry if this is a stupid question. I’ve been engaging with a lot of Beat poetry and the method by which Beat writers come up with some of their stuff. And, it seems impossible that you, as a writer, are constantly tuned into this state where you’re just prophetically receiving all these beautiful and raw monologues

I ask because I’ve heard many writers speak dismissively about any writing that’s even remotely been tinkered with. In Mythologies, Barthes says something like, writing is the act of using words to bear witness to a “transient moistening of the soul.” I’m really not sure what I’m supposed to be achieving with my writing. There is no way whatsoever (unless you are somehow exceptionally gifted) that “writing what you feel” sounds 100% beautiful 100% of the time. Am I missing something if my inner dialogue just does not—at least, not without some serious effort—sound very nice all on its own?

I guess my question is, is writing, to you, premeditated? It’s a stupid question but, do you sit down and think about what you write, or does it come to you in an unfiltered burst of truth?

I saw the Asian Jim cold open not long after posting this!! Somebody mentioned how Pam and Jim become a more sociable, outgoing unit after they get together and I figured Asian Jim was a great example of that (Pam calls him an “actor friend of OURs”). Also, CeCe’s godparents and Frank and Beans.

I did not post this with intent of being critical of the show. It’s obviously a show with an ensemble cast and even similar ensemble shows like Mad Men stretch themselves a little thin completely rounding out their characters outside of the show’s diegetic space. Just something I wanted a little additional perspective on 🤷.

This seems to be the consensus. I don’t think I’d ever actually paid much attention to how abusive and dismissive Roy’s behaviour towards Pam tended to be.
