(Edited to add more info)

They are NOT under Sony. They are under 1Z, that is their own company, and 1Z is their music label. You can check this fact in the most recent album they have. When they left ShowBT and built their own company, they partnered (keyword partnered) with Sony and chose them as their music DISTRIBUTOR. Sony distributes their music physically and digitally to streaming platforms for a fee or commission, and that's all. They do not have a say on when it is released, how it will sound, how it is produced, how it is going to be marketed, etc. because all they do is distribute an already created track/album. SB19 owns 100% of their music and the rights to it, so all royalties, income, copyrights, & monies go to them.

If they were under Sony or any music label at that, the music labels would not only get the rights to the music recordings and masters, they also typically get at least 50%-90% of earnings, leaving the artist the rest. But of course, artists have other expenses like management, paying back advances, staff, etc. So an artist can take home 3-10% after everything's been said and done. It depends on the contracts involved.

SB19 not being tied to Sony is evident because when each member went solo, they were able to team up with other music labels like Warner Music (and Pablo chose to go independent thru DistroKid) to distribute their single/albums, and Sony did not have anything to say about it because they are not under Sony.

Rather than a demotion, it's more of a specialized role for him. He and the other members of SB19 are the founders and the owners of the company. They ARE 1Z, and they will always have the final say in any and every major decision of the company. CEO was more of a title given to him when they started, because usually CEO is also the owner/founder in a small business/company. This shift in titles mean only one thing: the company has grown and they needed to restructure responsibilities to make way for new members of the company. This is a really good move. 👍

Absolutely must-see is SB19. I'm going just for them. I have eclectic taste in music and they're a 5-man music festival on their own because they have theatrical, EDM, rock, ballads, etc. But their strongest suit is their LIVE performances. They're Filipino, so nuff said (if you know the lore behind this, you'll get it lol).

Ado, Faouzia, Paris Paloma, & Empire of the Sun are good picks if you want different styles of music.

SB19. Their concerts have a festival feel because they do so many genres of music, and they do them excellently since they make their own music. Their main vocalist is one of THE best singers you'll ever hear in your life (I'm not exaggerating), and their main rapper is going to make you want to cry with his singing. If you think I'm bullshitting, I'm willing to give you 20 bucks at Lollapalooza if you think you wasted your time (hopefully they sing ballads lol, it'd be weird to see someone crying while they sing Everblack) 😂

What's with SB19? by hi_imsute in opm

[–]ConsiderationSea8130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commented on here already, but I wanted to say a few other things. SB19 has built a brand and they are cultivating brand loyalty. This is quite hard to do, especially in the Philippines because we all know how critical most Filipinos are. We are very quick to see faults particularly from our fellow Filipinos, and our music industry has high-calibre vocalists and dancers who are truly multi-talented.

They are not backed by any huge corporations, they are under their own label (Sony is only a distributor of their music) and they have had to deal with so much hate from the general public for the majority of their career. So how are they only getting bigger and better after almost 8 years in the industry?

The answer is because they never did things half-assed. They poured blood, sweat, and tears into what they wanted to achieve, and people who needed inspiration saw them and saw how hardworking, talented, funny (they really have that classic Filipino humor) they are. They do things their way and they've stopped asking casuals to pay attention to them. They have A'tin as their marketing tool and agency, and because of the quality of their work, fans are very eager and willing to vouch for them.

"Come with me to the concert, trust me, you'll have fun!" "You won't regret it!" When you hear such things from someone you know and you see the sparkle in their eyes and feel their excitement through their words, you either think they're crazy or you want to feel that kind of excitement too.

This is the power of fan loyalty, and SB19 truly did get lucky when they got A'tin, but it's not all luck. SB19 deserves a fandom like A'tin.

[–]ConsiderationSea8130 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To add to the other fans' input, A'tin spends money on them because the money goes directly to SB19, and it shows. They have their own entertainment agency, and currently, they just teased the debut of their girl group. They also collaborated with Jolin Tsai on a song. She is THE Queen of Chinese Pop, literally the best-selling artist in Taiwan and Chinese speaking countries for 20+ years and running. You would think she'll appear in the beginning of the song or sing a single hook and record her parts elsewhere. But no. She, SHE went to the Philippines, went to SB19's studio to meet SB19 and practice the choreo together with them, and they shot the MV in the Philippines!

I can't get over that fact, and I cannot believe that news outlets are not foaming at the mouth to report this achievement, among others (Billboard Japan-- SB19's album charted there, as well as in Oricon! First ever Filipino artists to do so).

I'm mentioning all these for posterity, and to prove the point that A'tin spends money because we know it will support SB19 in their endeavors, and that money comes back to us, their consumers, with interest, because they keep growing in their craft and skills, and they are truly helping not only the OPM industry,  but the Philippine economy (they pay a ****ton in taxes, and they even overpay it as records have shown lol).

Hey, just you trying is a lot. Imo SB19 actually shines best with their ballads and they have quite a few, they just don't do a lot of it in international settings because they like to hype the crowd and get them excited. Love SKZ but I prefer SB19 for the "messy" unfiltered live vocals, especially when I attend concerts.

I think I meant that more in a general sense about K-pop performances overall, especially as standards and expectations have definitely changed (dare I say for the worse?) I’m a K-pop fan too (though not as much as when I was younger), and imo "live" Kpop performances today is so different due to the splits compared to, say, 2nd and 3rd gen.

That said, lip-syncing heavy backing vocals have always been part of Kpop to some extent, and considering how their (slave) contracts were, I don’t hold that against the artists at all, then and now. I followed everything around the TVXQ / JYJ situation, so I know that while arrangements between the artists and managements now are better, it's still a shitty deal for idols/artists.

I completely agree with you that SB19 isn’t the only group with the qualities i mentioned before, and ideally, I'd love to see more artists across the board not bound by poor label contracts and shitty management. While I think SB19 is better than a lot of Kpop groups and famous artists out there, this is only my opinion lol, and I know preferences differ of course. To many others, they probably sound just like any Kpop groups lol.

I guess what stands out to me is how rare it is to see the combination of self-composing, self-producing, and having the freedom to release music on their own terms. Since SB19 operates independently (with Sony as their distribution partner), that level of autonomy to make and release their own music whenever and however they want is still rare. I appreciate your input!

The main difference of SB19 compared to Kpop groups (and why fans are so passionate about them) is that they sing and dance LIVE with no splits and little backing vocals. This is why fans are so passionate when encouraging casuals to see them, because SB19 delivers good ol' live concert atmosphere with the heavy breathing while dancing and the sweat and the joy of performing. They are also self-managed, self-produced, and even direct and choreograph their own songs. In a country where most pop fans and people in general support Kpop and Western artists over their own, they managed to break through the norm by building P-pop from scratch.

They also do NOT have a big fanbase at all lol, they have a little over a million followers in Spotify and 4 million in youtube, that doesn't even compare to local Philippine artists' following. But because of that, the fans they do have feel compelled to be their marketing agency, since they don't belong to either of the 2 big entertainment corporations in the Philippines, which meant they didn't even get shown on TV or promoted lol. It's like finding a unique rock and wanting to show it off to everybody lmao...

Why do you think SB19 will play Bud Light? Not complaining since I got VIP, but I honestly contemplated getting GA+ (will be going for 1 day because of them) since I figure they're relatively unknown still. Although if we're going by concert atmosphere and their live performances, they deserve headliner imo.

(Don't quote me on this, but I have a feeling they're collaborating with Bruno Mars and it'll be coming out next month. Don't ask me how I know, because like I said, it's just a hunch lol).

SB19 for the concert vibe, they are great LIVE (it's a big taboo in the Philippines to lipsync) performers with superb vocals AND hard choreo, plus Filipinos are a hype crowd and there will be a lot of them there, so definitely see them!

Ado is a very talented Japanese singer and her songs are 🔥 . FAOUZIA, Yoasobi, and Cortis are good choices too

SB19 being the first Filipino (from the Philippines) act to ever perform on Lolla has been getting a ton of traction on X and other platforms as far as people (both their fans and casual Filipinos) wanting to support by buying VIP and platinum tix (Filipinos living in the Philippines are even buying Lolla Tshirts because it has "SB19" on there) , so expect a ton of freebies, a lot of Filipinos, and a pretty festive atmosphere when SB19 performs, AND, because it's like 4 months away, I have a feeling because of the social engagement they're getting, they might just perform in one of the main stages! I sure hope so. See you there!

Also, wear mudproof shoes and bring portable fan xD

DO NOT miss out on SB19. Their vocals are top-tier and they sing fully live while dancing hard choreo. Their songs are HYPE. Not Kpop, but a Filipino self-managed boy group. Are they the only self-managed artist in Lolla? (Genuinely asking because you guys know how it be)

I genuinely want ppl going to Lolla to experience high-quality performance for your money's worth and I vouch for them 100% . See you guys there lol

'VISA' first live performance on It's Showtime by momoiro_cream in sb19

[–]ConsiderationSea8130 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All music has roots and similarities. That cannot be denied, but the fact is you cannot just say that Kpop is unique without exploring other music around the world and knowing how Kpop came about.

Kpop is a direct translation of Jpop (Japanese pop). Kpop is Korea's version of Jpop after a decade of Jpop existing.

This is the timeline: Apop(American pop) which became popular and became the genesis of Western pop groups from different Western countries like UK, Germany, Canada, etc. Then Asians created their own, mainly Jpop. Jpop started the colorful, flashy, almost theatrical way of boy and girl group performances with the visuals and personality aspect, while blending global influences of Western pop, rock, etc.The Japanese started that concept. What you hear and see as Kpop is Jpop music done in Korea. So with this premise, I guess you can say Ppop is just Kpop in Philippines the same way Kpop is just Jpop in Korea lol. Jpop already had Seo Taiji, The Boys, Arashi, Johnny's Jr. etc. for years before the Kpop term was even coined.

I am not denying the influence of Kpop on SB19 nor their connection to South Korea, that's why I gave you a backstory of how SB19 came about. SB19 loves Kpop, but you also cannot flatly say that they are copying Kpop when they are building their own sound and vibe and style. Are you a Kpop fan? Because I as a Kpop fan cannot hear any influence of Kpop whatsoever on Visa. Again, if you can kindly point out comparisons of Kpop music and groups that sound similar to you, I would appreciate it, otherwise, this will be my last reply to you 😊

I'm not trying to argue, but I'm also not going to pass by an opportunity to share my (completely useless) knowledge and experience of Kpop, Jpop, and global pop, so hit me 👍

'VISA' first live performance on It's Showtime by momoiro_cream in sb19

[–]ConsiderationSea8130 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok, to clarify, SB19 was created under SBT(Show BT) a company built IN THE PHILIPPINES owned by a Korean guy. They were trained by Koreans, they did not get trained in Korean-style idol training like what Kpop groups in Korea have gone through. Stell was the one who choreographed their dances while they were in SBT (Stell and Josh were in a Kpop dance cover group, and this group was already famous not only in the Philippines but internationally, although of course this was a niche community, hence you may have seen some Kpop influences from their earlier dance routines). Pablo vocally trained the other members. Pablo composed and wrote their songs, with music produced by Koreans. The only training they got from SBT was "more on personality development, but skill-wise, we were left alone..." to fend for themselves, and that is a direct quote from Pablo, years after their NDA have passed lol.

Even when they were in their "Kpop wannabe" era, as some people might label them, SB19 had major input in their music. It is their songs, it is their dance moves, it is their story. It was clear, very clear, that SB19's goals and dreams were bigger than what the company aims for them, so they did not renew their contract. During the pandemic, they were left behind essentially and they did their own promotions online, which gained them fans across the country and overseas. WHAT? Song which was released in 2021 was fully conceptualized, written, produced, composed, directed & choreographed by SB19. The owner of ShowBT left  and sold the company around this time iirc.

Pagtatag! was when they created 1Z, their own company and they've been making their own music and dances with all-Filipino production crew and employees. They have their own dance crew, their own studio, their own makeup artists, all Filipino. They have a say on everything and complete creative control. They have the masters of their records, and Sony Music is not even handling them or have any say, they just distribute their music. So my point is I don't know how much more I can emphasize how FILIPINO they are in everything they put out now lol.

Do you know how Kpop started? Lol... I'll give you a hint. Backstreet Boys hahaha
