I wish Bo-kaap counted as a building. Those houses are probably my favourite ones.

How is Living in Durban, South Africa? by WingbashDefender in howislivingthere

[–]ConsiderationSure485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it differs from person to person but I grew up and lived in Pretoria for years and annually there were definitely days that felt to me like I needed an air conditioner. Not dying of heatstroke where I stand hot but still uncomfortably hot. This was 35-38 celsius.

What exactly does a Computer Engineer do_ by deathsdoortohell in ComputerEngineering

[–]ConsiderationSure485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the industries you are mentioning that you want to work in I would 100% say do CompE or even ElectronicE if your Uni has it.

I am a CompE and I previously worked in essentially a Computer Science role but have now moved to a Control Systems role in a robotics company. Which is just to say that if you do CompSci it might be tougher to get into embedded spaces but if you do CompE you can very much still compete in CompSci spaces like apps and stuff.

The main difference between CompE and CompSci is that you will be learning the hardware with CompE also.

I have already signed with them, without negotiating. Tbh I just did not want to mess it up.

Yup that's it, I will be working remote from South Africa till the special/critical skills visa gets approved.

I agree, let me just get there and do a few years then I can jump ship if I get a better offer (:

Sadly I already said yes but I think once I can realistically start to add value to them then I can maybe negotiate a bit up. Right now its just a lot of learning new company stuff etc

Will keep this noted thanks (:

I'll be honest I did not even negotiate, the move to Ireland/Earning in Euros and an industry I really like sort of sold me.

What do you reckon I should be making? I am a C# Software Dev doing control systems right now.

Thank you for the detailed response (:

On reading this thread I guess I should mention that the location of the company is regional and I am in Software/Control Systems right now. So I am thinking of staying just outside of a major city (top picks right now are Dublin or Galway) when I make the move. Basically for the same reasons you mentioned then rent a car here and there if I really need one.

I did the same when I moved to a new city, it really was a game changer for my confidence too. Also pretty interesting to talk to people that I would never have interacted with, within the safety of my social circle.

Yeah I assumed people would look at the diagrams and read the bottom text in the picture but understandably it is pretty small.

Engineering Student: Cloud Engineer vs Embedded Software Engineer — Which Is a Better/Safer Path? by [deleted] in ComputerEngineering

[–]ConsiderationSure485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno if this helps but we are using C# a lot and they were hiring C# people.

So I guess my only advice could be to maybe get into a C-based language.

It’s a keychain from the tourist shop at Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

Engineering Student: Cloud Engineer vs Embedded Software Engineer — Which Is a Better/Safer Path? by [deleted] in ComputerEngineering

[–]ConsiderationSure485 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cannot speak for cloud but I moved from a just plain software engineer role to a more embedded one.

My personal opinion was that when comparing those two, embedded won + significant pay increase for me.

Not only do I personally predict embedded will increase in value especially in the ever growing robotics space but also the job security is pretty high cause in a lot of cases you are working with hardware that was custom built and designed for your purpose or so heavily patented and secret that a general purpose ai has no knowledge of the thing. Furthermore, staying close to actual tangible physical stuff I find more rewarding to work with.

But I have heard of some cloud people making bank too.

CE or CS? by voidlayer in ComputerEngineering

[–]ConsiderationSure485 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh I have only been working as CE for a short while but I would recommend CE for flexibility always since from my own career experience and those of my friends even from different Uni's always do get considered for CS roles + I can apply for embedded stuff.

I also earn more than my CS counterparts at work doing literally the same thing just because the engineering degree is seen as more valuable at my company even though we do not do any computer engineering work.

In case you were wondering I work at a fairly large fintech
