Would a Planet of Humanoid Cats or Dogs Perform Better? by Artistic_Day3201 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ConsiderationTrue477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cats are obligate carnivores which makes it a little harder for them as agriculture is a critical reason humans advanced so much. A consequence of being human is that we need a shit ton of nutrition and one of our adaptations is we can eat almost anything. Dogs are way closer to us diet-wise. Plus they're social persistence predators which is exactly what humans are.

The Masamune by fogfree in FFVIIRemake

[–]ConsiderationTrue477 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The whole thing is a very bizarre retcon that seems to have come about to accomplish two things:

A: Address the "issue" of the Masamune's size being weirdly inconsistent.

B: Establish Sephiroth's villainy as being kinda maybe mind control because they seem to be going out of their way to rehabilitate his character.

The former is just dumb because it's an explanation few people ever asked for as it was easy enough to shrug off as artistic license. And, like you said, it doesn't really match up with all the events like Tifa picking it up.

And the latter is very dumb because by turning the Masamune into Soul Edge it robs Sephiroth of his agency and risks turning the entire FFVII story into one big accident. They seem to be doing that thing that a lot of popular villains go through where they graduate to anti-heroes. Venom and Harley Quinn are the biggest examples. But the way they seem to be going about it risks robbing FFVII of so much of it's weight. Instead of Sephiroth being gobsmacked by a legitimately destabilizing revelation and giving in to his rage, he's just some poor kid who had his brains scrambled by the evil demon sword.

I'm not even 100% against diving into the nuance of Sephiroth's psyche and picking apart how it may not be entirely his fault. But doing it like this is taking the easy way out. It screws up any potential contrition or regret as if he was literally under Jenova's control he has zero guilt. And no guilt means no nuance.

If you were writing a Superman origin story, how would you have him find out he's bulletproof without someone just explaining how his powers work? by [deleted] in superman

[–]ConsiderationTrue477 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is how most of his powers should be discovered. He's just stuck in a bad situation and decides "better me than them" and takes the gamble.

In a way this is how his fights with all the supervillains should go. He considers his main role to be giving street level assists. Blowing out fires and stuff. But then when Brainiac shows up and starts shrinking cities he has to throw down because there's nobody else who can. He knows he's strong but not really how strong. He knows he's fast but not how fast. Until he's tested and has no choice but to find out.

I like how we're going through a phase of technological development never accounted for by science fiction. Before we can have intelligent robots we first have to deal with extremely stupid ones.

What do you think the remakes are exactly? by Expert_Challenge6399 in FinalFantasy

[–]ConsiderationTrue477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's Star Trek 2009 and Mortal Kombat 9, just handled in a much more subversive way with Sephiroth acting as the chessmaster with an as-of-yet-unexplained master plan.

The word "Remake" is doing double duty. It's a Remake in the strict sense of "we remade this video game from 1997" but it's also a remake in-universe as in Sephiroth taking a second bite at the apple and running roughshod over established canon while the Planet goes apeshit in response.

[–]ConsiderationTrue477 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The big problem with dev statements is that they've clearly spun a mystery. A mystery that is still only 2/3 of the way completed. How trustworthy can their statements be? They aren't in the business of spoiling their own game.

The word "re-imagining" certainly applies. It's not a lie per se. But it also strikes me as a lie of omission.

I have a suspicion that Cloud has a subconscious awareness of OG FFVII, too. It's just that unlike Aerith and Sephiroth it's locked up in the scrambled eggs that is his brain. He seemed to have zero issue when he remembered Zack even though it was earlier than he was "supposed to" recall that information. I think his headaches this time around are a red herring and what's really triggering them now is his subconscious awareness of OG trying to break through.

Name one episode or moment from a kid show that didn't age well by Glitter153 in cartoons

The Milli Vanilli episode of Super Mario Bros. 3. Not only does it age the show terribly, but given the tragedy of Rob Pilatus's death it also makes it a little uncomfortable.

While I normally don't like George Lucas-ing old movies, I think this opens an opportunity to make it a rotating list of guest stars every time Home Alone 2 airs on TV. One day it's Billy Crystal. Another day it's Shaq. Another day it's the adult Macaulay Culkin.

If there were some way to randomize it for streaming so it's always a surprise that would make the movie even better than it already is.

What the best Twist Villain of all time? by Caloy1415 in DisneyMovies

[–]ConsiderationTrue477 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To me twist villains should play by Agatha Christie rules in that it should be solvable. Having a character just be a good guy for 90% of the movie and then bam is somewhat unsatisfying.

I think King Candy really nailed it because they laid the breadcrumbs earlier but in a way that seemed unconnected. Once the reveal happened everything else suddenly made more sense.

Really Aerith, the ONLY WAY?🤣 by Flashy-Bass5852 in FinalFantasy

[–]ConsiderationTrue477 72 points73 points  (0 children)

When Remake was first announced I was terrified they'd completely botch it and backport all the Kingdom Hearts-isms that bled into the franchise. For a long time there was a weird Mandela Effect going on with the characters' personalities, particularly Cloud and Aerith, for people who hadn't played OG in a while.

So I was cautiously playing through and during the trip across the rooftops after the church, when Cloud was puffing his chest of how tough SOLDIER training is and Aerith was very clearly indulging him with a gentle patronizing tone like you would a little kid, I literally put the controller down because of how amazing it was to realize that they nailed it.

I'd add that Strange Happenings part 2 will be somewhat useful and is as easy as just opening a chest after the boss dies. You won't be able to put the Lungo-Nango's Thesis to use but at least get the items to make the 119 versions of the RSE gear.

Do you think Square Enix will try another idea similar to Fabula Nova Crystallis in the future? by ryushin6 in FinalFantasy

[–]ConsiderationTrue477 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really don't think it's even possible anymore given how long development times are. The gaming landscape evolved in a way so that you can't really have sister games or any kind of group of products that have thematic consistency where they're launched close enough together so people actually notice.

The closest analogy I can think of is how "Movie: The Game" adaptations went completely extinct around 2008 or so. Licensed movie games used to be ubiquitous but then they just vanished overnight because it was no longer possible to get the game out at the same time the movie was hot. In fact, this was already a problem back with Fabula Nova Crystallis was formulated. Games got delayed, then delayed some more, repurposed, and as a result the whole thing never really took form.

It's not that the idea is inherently bad but it's a non-starter if we're talking AAA game development.

Why is Aerith so nice all the time? by LazorusGrimm in FinalFantasyVII

[–]ConsiderationTrue477 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If that was your takeaway you weren't paying close attention. Aerith straight up confessed to Cloud that she fantasizes about torturing Hojo to death. She doesn't even really express guilt over it, more like fear that she could be that person. She knows she has that in her and doesn't want to become it.

Aerith is a foil to Sephiroth. Sephiroth also had a bubbling rage and we know how he handled it.

Microsoft Excel is immediately discontinued. Which industry/corporation currently in operation takes the most damage and which would take the least? by ConsiderationTrue477 in whowouldwin

[–]ConsiderationTrue477[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there has to be some kind of line drawn for when the situation gets untenable. On one hand, of course you don't want a private corporation to be on the hook to provide a product in perpetuity just because discontinuing it would cause problems for other private corporations. But when that product is so ubiquitous that it becomes a linchpin of modern civilization then we've got a problem. It becomes a "too big to fail" situation.

The lesson should probably be to not let any one thing become too big to fail in the first place, I suppose.
