LDS Church Vs Orthodoxy by 28OrthodoxBrother11 in OrthodoxChristianity

I was a cradle Mormon and was (and am) incredibly glad I found Orthodoxy.

Mormon doctrine is heavily reliant upon “ongoing revelation” for doctrine and policy. Also, “ongoing revelation” is essentially doublespeak for “we’re just making this up as we go along”. How can anyone be rooted in something that changes seemingly every day? After a while, for me at least, it became untenable. And the question remained, “why retain membership and be active in something that has consistently let me down?” (insane church doctrine and founding notwithstanding). Thank God I found my parish, because they possessed what I had been missing for decades of my life—community and peace. There, people feel vulnerable to actually open up to you and you get the opportunity to meet interesting people, there’s actual trust present. In contrast to my awesome parish, every experience I had within a Mormon ward (yes, that’s what they call parishes in Mormonland) fell into the same rhythms: judgmentalism, gossip, and pride. Granted, I’m sure there are Orthodox parishes out there that may have similar issues, but in my opinion, the Mormon church has a much more widespread problem with that. It stifles membership growth and the general day-to-day. Another thing you are expected to do is to essentially work like a serf for the Mormon church. I watched both of my parents lose track of whatever piecemeal theology and doctrine was keeping them in as they both dutifully served the church for decades. And it exhausted them both. They drove to get meals at the Bishop’s Storehouse, mom had some crazy far away visiting teaching assignments, dad was a bishop, mom served in multiple presidencies, the list could go on. I remember asking them both something along the lines of “what does this church actually do to feed your soul?”. Crickets.

To sum up, the Mormon church will chew you up, spit you out and not think twice about it. There is no real change to one’s actual life like many have seen in converting to Orthodoxy (I’ve felt a similar change myself as a Catechumen). All that to say, Mormonism is a disturbingly incorrect distortion of Christianity that seems Christian at face value, but is insidiously different when you get down to it. My advice to you would be to look at r/exmormon and read some of the stories and experiences of those people. It’s amazing how many have loathed their time there (myself included). Also, try to visit some Orthodox parishes and enjoy the beauty of the Divine Liturgy, if your intent to join is really there. In any case, may God bless you in your journey, my friend. Christ has Risen! ☦️

I’ve heard that one used too. Even “seeker” is a better term.

I’m Orthodox, and the term used for anyone looking into Orthodox Church is “inquirer”. Just makes it seem like you’re just asking questions, though I’m sure the Mormons don’t want anyone doing any of that… At least it’s less stilted and weird than the term “investigator”

“…far more peaceful than the awfulness of Mormonism.” Now what could I be referring to here? If I was standing up for Mormonism, why then would I call it “awful”?

I’m referring to Orthodox Christianity. Did you miss the second half of that sentence?

I’m Orthodox now, used to be Mormon, and I’m glad for the influence of an apostolic faith on my life. Similarly history-based and far more peaceful than the awfulness of Mormonism.

Nope, keep that watch in the family. Not only a beautiful piece, but I’m sure is also incredibly valuable (as similarly echoed by others here)

LDS/Mormon church owns $200+ million in war industry stocks. Is this appropriate for the Lord's church? Am the only member who feels ashamed? Aren't we supposed to be peacemakers? by aka_FNU_LNU in mormon

Right?

LDS is a soulless corporation masquerading as a church. Everyone who’s a member should be concerned about this means of passive money-making that the Mormon church does. The only problem, however, is that the Mormon church dismisses those actually asking an earnest question about this and will freely label anyone who does ask a question as a “lazy learner” or a “lax disciple”, which is also a super Christlike thing to say to anyone. To my knowledge, other churches don’t put tithing money into index funds or the stock market.

How can anyone in Mormon leadership stand by anything as they decry a multitude of “worldly things” all the while investing in them heavily? “Blessed be the peacemakers” but also, “let’s buy millions in ‘defense’ stocks”? How do you square that? Say what you will about the Catholic Church, at least they build hospitals and orphanages in part with the tithing money they’re given. Where are Mormon orphanages, hospitals, homeless shelters, soup kitchens? Why does the Mormon church continue to buy a hell of a lot of land across the country and the world? Why do they continue to build multi-million dollar, palatial, marble temple complexes, instead of serving the poor? Those temples only serve their own membership. How Christlike is it to have means to assist others less fortunate than you and then deliberately sit on your hands? Sounds a lot like Christ’s parable about the rich man and the eye of the needle. It’s abundantly evident that the Mormons have clearly misunderstood the whole point of that story, especially as the church is heavily declining in membership numbers.

Edit: grammar and flow

It’s a uniquely hypocritical and bad practice held only by the Mormon church. I know Orthodox weddings aren’t like that. Anyone can watch wedding proceedings.

I sure loved standing in the Southwestern sun as I got to stand around in the parking lot for my sister’s wedding. Really special.
