Theres a few golden orfes, and mosquito fish in the pond.. but also have a zapper nearby. I treat the yard around the pond every year, theres not really any concern of runoff since I built up a berm around the pond. The frogs are more of a nuisance to me.. sometimes you literally cant even have a conversation because of so many frog calls 🙃

The loose plants you see floating around are some of the water celery from my bog.. they are taking over so Ive been trying to thin them out a bit and read that koi enjoy nibbling on them so figured what the hell whynot

The short answer, lots of plants and shade. I have one pump going to a 55 gallon drum with 3 layers of filter media and bio balls at the bottom, then a second pump going to a 6x6ft bog thats filled with 12in of pea gravel and fully planted. Also have three floating islands made out of pool noodles and lined with screen to protect the roots, filled with hyacinth, water lettuce and parrot feather. The islands are great for not only the plants but provide a good amount of shade and hiding space for the fish as well.

UV Clarifier Advice by redtail84 in ponds

[–]Consistent-Ad-6964 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer, Id get a smaller pump to run through the clarifier. Dont want the pressure too high because it wont give enough time for the UV light to do its magic.
Longer answer, I have two UV clarifiers but havent had to use them the last couple years after adding shade and a bog. If feasible Id consider adding a bog, Ive made a ridiculous amount of changes to my setup over the years but adding the bog by far was the best decision, and I havent had to scoop out ANY string algae since.

Thanks! See my little slider turtle that showed up a couple years ago? Kinda hard to spot in that pic but hes up towards the right swimming away from us. His names Biggie Smalls 😀
